The Decaying World

Chapter 421 - 404 New School 2

This time, however, Lin Hui’s reincarnation wasn’t as smooth as the last. The family he was born into wasn’t named Lin, but Ding.

His parents were both mid-level managers at a paper corporation, and the family was fairly well-off.

He wasn’t an only child, either. He had an older sister and an older brother, which was a new experience for him.

His older sister, the eldest child, was named Ding Luo and was five years his senior. His older brother, Ding Yiran, was two years older than him.

As for Lin Hui, he was named Ding Lin this time around.

Thanks to the influence of his Heart and Spirit, his new name still ended up containing ’Lin’.

While quietly establishing his local identity, Lin Hui also swiftly gathered all available information on the superhuman Endless Divine Race and the Outer Gods.

’This place... The Endless Divine Race is basically a super-enhanced version of the Summoners from the Fog People World... No, I should say, they’re a super-enhanced version of the Fog People themselves.’

「Fifteen years later.」

Having completed his physical conditioning, Lin Hui sat alone in the back row of the classroom. He appeared to be listening attentively to the lecture, but in reality, he was organizing all the information he had gathered to date.

The Endless Divine Race and the Psionic Monsters. These were two subjects that were impossible to ignore here.

Psionic Monsters could appear anywhere at any time. They were immortal and indestructible, immune to conventional weapons, and carried a terrifyingly potent psionic contamination. Moreover, each Psionic Monster possessed species abilities unique to its mother god.

Many of these abilities were unreasonably overpowered. Lin Hui had once seen a news report about a Psionic Monster rampaging through a city. According to official reports, its special ability was called ’Instant Rebound’.

It could completely reflect any damage from an attack lasting less than three seconds back at the attacker.

If three members of the Endless Divine Race hadn’t shown up to coordinate and destroy it, that entire district would have likely been razed to the ground.

Lin Hui twirled a pencil in his hand as scenes, data, and live footage he had collected over the years flashed through his mind.

’The Endless Divine Race appear without warning. They live among ordinary people, their identities unknown and untraceable. They only reveal themselves when they are needed.’

’This place is certainly interesting.’

Based on his online research over the years, even though human territory had shrunk significantly, it still spanned more than ten star systems and hundreds of planets.

The distances between these star systems were measured in light-years, meaning humanity had long since mastered technologies like faster-than-light long-distance jumps.

’And even with all that, they still can’t uncover the true identities of the Endless Divine Race, nor can they fight back against the Psionic Monsters and the two Outer Gods behind them.’

"Excuse me, could you tell me more about the Blood Axe Berserker that appeared on the west side of the city a few days ago?"

A hushed voice whispered from behind him.

"I was on the bus home at the time. You know, I live in a pretty remote area, so I always have to transfer and then take the Route 19 bus from Xilin Station. That’s when it happened..."

Another girl, her voice also lowered in excitement, began to answer the question for what must have been the hundredth time.

With a calm gaze, Lin Hui set down his pencil.

Here, members of the Endless Divine Race awakened within the bodies of ordinary people. But because of their mysterious identities, immense power, and diverse styles, they were treated like special celebrity idols in the eyes of the public, garnering fanatical followings from different groups.

RING RING RING.

The school bell rang.

The teacher at the front of the room quickly gathered her notes and walked out the door.

Lin Hui let out a breath, stood up, and stretched.

Even with only basic conditioning, his current body had long since surpassed the limits of an ordinary person.

The body he had cultivated in his previous life was more than sufficient, so this time he hadn’t focused on tempering his physique. Instead, he concentrated his efforts on practicing his Destruction Eye and the Great Yin Yang Time Reversal Sword Technique.

He had developed entirely new ways to use the Destruction Eye.

Because it was indestructible and incredibly powerful, Lin Hui had simply used it as the core around which he developed a series of offensive and defensive Techniques.

Furthermore, since his body could completely reset its condition once a day, he took full advantage of this to relentlessly experiment with various Techniques and Cultivation Techniques on himself.

As a result, his mastery of the Great Yin Yang Time Reversal Sword Technique grew increasingly profound.

However, because this Sword technique was simply too powerful, he lacked opportunities for practical combat experience. He still needed to find a chance to test it out more often.

"Hey, Ding Lin, how come your sister hasn’t been picking you up lately?" His deskmate, Gao Junqiang, was a sturdy young man with a crew cut. At about five-foot-seven, he had the muscular build of an athlete, dark skin, and a lecherous-looking face. He was one of the very few friends Lin Hui had here.

Although he had been reincarnated as a kid again, his mental age was what it was, so he naturally had no interest in socializing and messing around with other kids.

Gao Junqiang, however, was an exception. The guy hadn’t originally talked to Lin Hui either—after all, nobody enjoys being friendly only to be met with a cold shoulder.

But ever since seeing Lin Hui’s older sister come to pick him up from school one time, he had lost his appetite and was utterly smitten. From that day forward, he became Lin Hui’s best friend in class.

"She’s probably on her way. It’s the weekend, so she should be coming," Lin Hui replied casually.

"I haven’t talked to your sister in so long! Ever since I heard she was coming to school today, I couldn’t sleep last night... I wish I were you... Having a sister that beautiful and sexy is literally my life’s biggest dream!" The envy and jealousy on Gao Junqiang’s face were completely unconcealed.

"If you’ve got the guts, then go for it. I won’t stop you. If you actually manage to win her over and become my brother-in-law, I’ll even call you a hero," Lin Hui joked, a rare occurrence.

His sister in this life, Ding Luo, was indeed very beautiful.

As Lin Hui stood up and walked out of the classroom, he saw Ding Luo standing in the crowd of parents, waving gently at him.

She wore a light gray business suit, her long legs clad in black stockings. She had a full bust and a waist so slender one could wrap a hand around it. Yet atop such an alluring and mature figure, her exquisitely made-up face held a faint, world-weary air.

She waved subtly with one hand while covering her mouth with the other, seeming to stifle a yawn.

"Little bro, over here."

"Yeah." Lin Hui made his way over, schoolbag in hand. Behind him, Gao Junqiang ignored his father’s frantic waving, pretending not to see as he followed Lin Hui toward Ding Luo.

"Looks like my dad isn’t here yet. I’ll go say hi to your sister first," Gao Junqiang said, lying through his teeth.

"Heh." Lin Hui was speechless. He squeezed through the crowd of students and soon arrived in front of Ding Luo.

"How come you’re so early today? Where’s our older brother?" he asked familiarly.

"He just got back from his classes and is at home playing games. Did you really think he’d be willing to come pick you up?" Ding Luo said, raising an eyebrow.

His older brother, Ding Yiran, had just started at a local technical college. He did nothing but play games all day and had no ambition whatsoever. He was so overweight that the handsome features he’d inherited from their parents were completely obscured.

He looked like he belonged to a completely different family than Ding Luo and Lin Hui.

"Hi, Ding Luo! I’m Ding Lin’s friend, Gao Junqiang!" Gao Junqiang squeezed his way over, extending a hand as if for a handshake, trying to get a squeeze of her delicate hand.

Only to get a smack on the forehead from Ding Luo.

"You little punk, so young and already trying to take advantage of people." Ding Luo yawned again. "Okay, you’ve said your piece. Your dad’s right behind you, and he looks pretty angry..."

Gao Junqiang turned his head and came face-to-face with his dad. They were less than a meter apart.

The next thing he knew, a sharp pain shot through his ear.

"No, no! Dad, I was wrong! I was wrong!"

Gao Junqiang’s howls faded into the distance.

Lin Hui and Ding Luo walked out of the crowd and got into a white hover car parked by the roadside.

The car belonged to Ding Luo. She had only just graduated from college and started working, so he had no idea how she could have afforded to buy such a luxury model hover car so quickly.

"You’re still such a loner. You’ll get bullied if you’re always by yourself at school," Ding Luo said, settling into the driver’s seat and glancing at her brother in the passenger seat. Her tone was gently persuasive.

"It’s fine. I have a friend, don’t I? So I’m not a loner," Lin Hui replied with a smile. This was where Gao Junqiang proved his value.

"Suit yourself," Ding Luo continued. "Mom and Dad went on another business trip. They’re on Green Pine Star to survey the market; the corporation says it’s planning to open a branch there. They’re basically treating it as a company-paid vacation."

"So you’re in charge of the house again?" Lin Hui was exasperated.

"Yep." Ding Luo sounded just as resigned.

The car started, rose slowly into the air, and flew forward.

"Your final exams are coming up. Have you thought about which university you want to apply for? Your grades are the best in the family, so you’ll probably choose Star Capital Industrial University, right?"

Star Capital was the capital city of the planet, its administrative and economic hub. Star Capital Industrial University was the top-ranked university on Red Pattern Star.

Naturally, it also had the highest admission requirements.

"Anything’s fine. I don’t really care where I go," Lin Hui replied. "More importantly, what about you? Why have you been yawning so much lately? You look exhausted every time I see you."

"I’m busy with something, but it’s almost done. It’s just so tiring, working overtime every day." As she spoke, Ding Luo’s expression grew even more weary.

On the skin of her chest, hidden from Lin Hui’s view, a complex, pure gold, antler-like pattern faintly shimmered in and out of sight.

Anyone familiar with the pattern would have recognized it at first glance: the standard emblem of the Endless Divine Race.

Secretly protecting humanity and its cities, they were beings akin to heroic idols. On Red Pattern Star alone, there were dozens of named and recorded members of the Endless Divine Race.

They were scattered across the planet, emerging to destroy any Psionic Monsters that appeared.

This pattern gave Lin Hui a strange sense of déjà vu. The piecemeal tactics, the monsters invading sporadically, the heroes always protecting humanity in anonymity.

He had actually guessed that his older sister in this life had some hidden secret, he just didn’t know what it was.

This was because his attention was focused primarily on the Psionic Monsters that appeared from time to time.

Just as Fusheng had said, these Psionic Monsters seemed to be constructed entirely out of some form of Extreme Yin Power.

Over the years, he had secretly touched the residual psionic energy left at monster attack sites. He discovered that if this chaotic energy was refined and filtered of impurities, it was quite similar to some of the pure-energy Treasure Medicines he had consumed in the past.

They were like dry tinder waiting for a spark; once ignited, they could release a tremendous, blazing energy.

For the moment, however, Lin Hui didn’t dare to casually try and capture one. First, he was wary of the Outer Gods behind the Psionic Monsters. He had a feeling these Outer Gods were very similar to his teacher Qimei’s Fusion Sect, just that their methods, their way of ’harvesting,’ weren’t as violent.

Second, these monsters were completely immune to physical attacks. Only attacks using Heart and Spirit or pure energy could even harm them, and their resistance was extremely high. Capturing one would require extensive preparation.

The only thing that could truly counter them was the Endless Divine Power of the Endless Divine Race.

Therefore, he had been waiting for the right opportunity—the perfect chance to capture a Psionic Monster without arousing any suspicion.

Now, that opportunity... seemed to be finally at hand.
