The familiar face, the familiar voice... and now, He Tou, who had once been Life Crane’s companion, had appeared as well.
They were back. They were all back.
But for Yang An, the sense of crushing pressure was overwhelming.
If Life Crane was erratic, then He Tou was pure malice. Facing both of them at once, it was as if the very air had been sucked away in an instant, leaving Yang An to suffocate.
"Finding you wasn’t easy. If we didn’t happen to have something you wanted, you never would have come here on your own.
You’re becoming more and more interesting, my dear little apprentice."
He Tou was very satisfied with the look on Yang An’s face upon seeing them here. It was like finding a lost toy; the moment he saw it again, he couldn’t wait to play with it.
Now Yang An finally understood. This was all a trap set by Life Crane, who had placed the Forbidden Artifact Fragment here knowing he would definitely come.
But one thing made no sense to Yang An: how did Life Crane know he had fused with the Forbidden Artifact, Golden Sun?
The Forbidden Artifact Fragment he obtained was not Golden Sun, but a Moon Shadow.
If Life Crane had intentionally placed the Moon Shadow here, then it must have been his.
And Moon Shadow could copy and disguise a Forbidden Artifact Fragment, but it needed the original for reference—the real Golden Sun.
’Could it be... that the real Golden Sun is in his hands too?!’
’If that’s the case, then with that small, incomplete piece, he could have used the same method I did to sense my presence and track me.’
As he thought of this, realization dawned on Yang An.
And the most crucial point was that Life Crane hadn’t used the real Golden Sun to lure him. Instead, he used the replica, Moon Shadow, to lay this trap and try to tempt him into fusing with it.
’That bastard’s goal from the very beginning must have been to use this method to extract the Golden Sun from my body!’
From the contents of the information box, Yang An immediately pieced together the most likely scenario, and a chill ran down his spine.
Thankfully, he possessed an ability no one else knew about. Otherwise, he would have easily fallen for Life Crane’s scheme, probably devoured until not even a fleck of bone remained.
"Why aren’t you speaking? Are you not the least bit happy to see your master?"
Life Crane spoke, his voice brimming with a smile, though it was impossible to tell if it was real or fake.
The Elder Life Crane, a creation refined using the Shell Nourishing Technique, had been personally eliminated by Yang An. This was tantamount to them burning all bridges. Yet now, Life Crane’s attitude was unchanged, as if the incident had never occurred.
Yang An took a long, deep breath inwardly, then immediately forced a smile onto his face and bowed respectfully.
"Disciple Yang An greets Master! Upon seeing you again, Master, I was so overcome with emotion I was at a loss for words. Please forgive my breach of etiquette.
During the days of Master’s absence, I thought of you day and night. I constantly remembered Master’s kindness, as deep as the sea, and could never forget it. Today, I finally see you again, Master... I... I can finally repay Master’s grace and serve by your side."
Yang An’s eyes were red, and they seemed to glisten with unshed tears, looking for all the world as if he had truly missed his great master for a long time and was unable to express it.
’Keep up the act!’ Yang An knew exactly what he had to do. If Life Crane was going to pretend nothing had happened, then so could he. They would both act as if they hadn’t burned their bridges before.
’This guy’s Cultivation Level is definitely at the Immortal Platform realm, above the Insect Dao. Faced with such terrifying power, resistance is useless. I’d probably be crushed to death before I could even make a move.’
’Better to just play along for now, to take the out he’s given me.’
’Since Life Crane is still treating me as his disciple on the surface, I’ll just keep playing the part. I’ll feign compliance for now.’
’Since Life Crane could use Moon Shadow to lure me here, the Golden Sun is most likely in his hands as well. The moment I figured that out, I knew I couldn’t escape. This was probably all part of Life Crane’s plan from the start.’
’As for his true objective... I can’t worry about that now. First, I need to figure out how to deal with this old monster and stay alive.’
"Good, good, good."
Life Crane burst into laughter, the sound echoing through the cave. He seemed genuinely happy, but anyone who actually believed that would probably die without ever knowing why.
"You rascal. It’s been a while, and you’ve become quite the smooth-talker. It truly is an eye-opener for me. Still, I miss that reckless youth you once were. You’d be much more pleasant to look at if you weren’t so cunning now."
The He Tou on Life Crane’s head also cackled sinisterly, its tone heavy with insinuation.
Yang An gave an awkward laugh. ’As if I’d dare talk back to this old monster right now.’
"You jest, Master."
"I specially brought out the thing you wanted to lure you here, hoping we could renew the bond between master and disciple. I have also missed you dearly."
When his laughter died down, Life Crane said slowly.
"Master’s intentions were profound. I was slow to realize it, and truly foolish."
Yang An replied humbly.
"It doesn’t matter that your realization came late. You are my disciple, so naturally, I must look out for you in all things. The one who came here is only an avatar; you certainly can’t fuse with the Forbidden Artifact Fragment like this. Since that’s the case, I will personally help you move your main body over here, so I can help you get what you desire."
Smiles bloomed on the faces of both Life Crane and He Tou simultaneously.
Hearing this, the expression on Yang An’s face froze, and he was profoundly shaken.
His mind suddenly roared like an engine, screaming and howling as countless thoughts raced past.
