Aliana stared at him in utter disbelief, her mind racing. She searched through her memories, going back to the moment she had first opened Hellborn.
She had devoured those pages as effortlessly as if they had been written in plain English. Never once had those ancient characters appeared foreign or strange to her, and now that Gavriel had revealed they were written in the demonic tongue, she didn’t know what to make of it.
Then, the rest of his words caught up with her.
"You said... my body was initially human," she murmured, searching his eyes. "What did you mean by that?"
Gavriel held her gaze before asking softly, "Don’t you feel the changes within yourself?"
Aliana’s lips parted slightly as Gavriel reached out and gently tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "At first, it was subtle. Your physical features sharpening, becoming even more striking. Tell me... what else have you noticed?"
Aliana admitted softly, "I can see better in the dark. I can hear further than before. And my stamina..."
"I think we have already established that your stamina is definitely worthy of praise," he interrupted, pinning her with a darkened gaze.
Aliana instantly felt blood rush to her face as memories of last night flooded her mind... or rather, memories of how their night had stretched well into this morning.
Clearing her throat, she tried to regain her composure. "Well... yes... that." She ran a hand through her hair, averting her eyes.
But as she did, another sharp memory from their intense passion struck her.
Without warning, she grabbed Gavriel by the collar and pulled his shirt open, revealing the bite mark on his neck that still hadn’t healed.
Her eyes widened. "This... I bit you."
Her gaze immediately shot back to his.
"What does this mean?" she asked, her concern growing with every word. "Am I turning into a demon now? And... and why hasn’t this healed? Can’t you heal yourself the way you heal me?"
The questions tumbled from her one after another until Gavriel calmly placed his hand against her cheek. "Calm down, baby."
"But..."
"Firstly, the mark hasn’t healed yet because I haven’t allowed it to."
"Why?" she asked softly.
"Because you gave this to me. I like it." His hand trailed down to her jaw before he gently pushed her hair aside, revealing the mark he had given her. His gaze lingered on it with fascination as his fingers traced over it. "Just as I like seeing my mark on you. No one has ever given me one."
His gaze returned to hers, raw with an undeniable hunger that turned his voice into a low, velvet murmur. "Just remembering last night makes me want to sink my teeth into you again."
She caught the flash of red in his eyes, and the sight sent a shudder straight down her spine.
She tilted her head to the side as he continued to run his knuckles down her neck, causing her eyes to close in surrender.
Watching her grow calmer, Gavriel continued softly, "Your body is adapting to the demonic nature of your soul. Slowly, it is changing to aid your powers so they can manifest in their true form. Because the transition is happening so naturally, you barely feel it unless the shift is extreme."
"As for your question... about whether you are becoming a demoness... I didn’t think such a transformation was possible. But watching you now, I believe you are like a...hybrid at the moment."
Aliana’s eyes snapped open.
Gavriel held her gaze. "A human body that is capable of transforming to a certain extent, while your demonic soul is slowly breaking its chains to reveal its true nature."
Aliana swallowed hard. "Okay. This is usually the part where you tell me not to freak out."
Gavriel deadpanned, "Don’t freak out, Ana."
Aliana’s brow furrowed into a deep scowl. "What kind of reassurance is that?"
Gavriel let out a soft sigh, his long fingers gently curling around the nape of her neck. He pulled her close, tucking her head comfortably beneath his chin as he leaned back into the deep armchair.
"There is no need to panic. Now that you know my true identity, it will be much easier for me to guide you every step of the way."
Aliana drew strength from his steady presence, breathing in his soothing scent before whispering against his collarbone, "Now that I think about it... Ivan and Evelyn warned me to practice controlling my magic only when you were nearby. Did they know your true identity all along?"
"They sensed I was a high-ranking entity from the underworld," Gavriel replied. "But they didn’t know I was the devil himself."
"I see..." She quieted down, resting against him until another terrifying thought crossed her mind.
"Gav?"
"Hmm?"
"If I... if I can transform... does that mean I will also grow those grotesque spider legs like that demoness, Vorra?" Just the thought of sprouting multiple pairs of arachnid limbs made her stomach churn with nausea.
Gavriel went still, and for a second she feared the worst, until a low, quiet chuckle vibrated through his chest.
Aliana pulled back only to find a warm, amused smile lighting up his features.
"No, baby," he reassured her. "I don’t think your body is capable of such a drastic transformation."
His smile gradually softened into a serious expression as he cautioned her, "Even if you know your body is slowly adapting, that doesn’t mean your powers have stopped being a danger to you. To a large extent, your body is still human. You cannot strain yourself the way you did back on that island. Do you understand?"
Aliana pressed her lips together. "But... when I use them, it’s not like I do it knowingly, you know. They just come to me according to the situation."
"Which is why you need to practise controlling them. We’ll add it to your daily schedule... without fail. Every night, we’ll dedicate some time to it so that when a situation like that arises, you won’t end up overstraining your body." Gavriel insisted.
Aliana let out a soft, resigned sigh. "Alright."
She went back to resting her head against his shoulder, and he instinctively drew her closer.
"Gav?" she murmured softly.
"Mm?"
"Now you don’t have to feel like the only one from the underworld between us anymore. I am right here with you." A soft smile curved Aliana’s lips as the thought settled in her heart.
In response, she felt him press a gentle kiss against her temple.
For a long moment, Aliana simply watched the golden fire crackling in the hearth. Then, a new thought crossed her mind. "If my soul truly originated from the underworld... does that mean I belong to a specific demonic rank?" She tilted her head up to search his eyes. "What level do you think I could be?"
