Chapter 1301: Chapter 1301: Critically Ill Patients Sent Later
After finishing the meal, Liu Banxia was in a pretty good mood.
Even though the patient took some detours, they eventually got it right, which is indeed something to be happy about.
"Director Liu, you’re back. The child still hasn’t woken up."
Just after arriving at the first-floor lobby, Cheng Yu hurriedly approached him.
"How were the test results from the neurologist?" Liu Banxia asked.
"That Dr. Peng just said the lack of oxygen was too prolonged, and it’s uncertain when he’ll wake up. But he shouldn’t be in a vegetative state; it’s just unknown how long it will take," Cheng Yu replied.
"If you ask me, why not try my method? It might just work," Liu Banxia said.
"Anyway, I still say the earlier he wakes up, the better his prognosis. After all, whether he’s on the hospital bed for three to five days, or one to two weeks, it’s still him."
"Director Liu, I came over to discuss this with you. Do you think your method could work?" Cheng Yu asked.
"To be honest, every patient’s situation is different. But right now, the only external stimulus that can help him is sound, which might help him navigate through his chaotic thoughts," Liu Banxia said.
"According to Dr. Peng, his EEG is very active. In layman’s terms, it’s like dreaming; his brain has misjudged the current situation and doesn’t want him to wake up, still protecting him."
"So I think it’s worth trying. It’s more convenient at night. Your floor is still the VIP floor; right now you only have two patients and one admitted today, plus a previous patient."
"Alright, thank you, Director Liu, for your continuous concern. I’ll try it tonight. No matter what, life is the most important," Cheng Yu said.
Understanding Liu Banxia’s words, his son, Liu Banxia, although not present, had been monitoring the situation. Otherwise, he wouldn’t know about the EEG results, just didn’t make it obvious as if seeking credit.
He also agreed with Liu Banxia, just that his son’s special condition made him a bit reluctant.
As for now, overthinking isn’t an option. Continuing to lie there could lead to uncertain consequences.
Cheng Yu left, and with a helpless shake of his head, so did Liu Banxia.
Brain injury prognosis is the most complicated. From the current situation, his son has already suffered a certain degree of brain injury.
But whether this damage is permanent or temporary cannot yet be determined. Only after the patient wakes up can tests be performed, and waking up is now the first priority.
His son is somewhat lucky, having been discovered in time. If delayed further, even if resuscitated, he might have been brain-dead.
"Director Liu, a few car accident patients are about to be sent over. Two are in serious condition," at this moment, Qi Wentai approached.
"Such a severe car accident?" Liu Banxia frowned and asked.
"A drunk driver ran a checkpoint and hit a police assistant, then ran over his leg. Several cars in the vicinity were hit, passengers inside sustaining various degrees of injuries," Qi Wentai said.
"The driver also hit two electric scooters, affecting even more pedestrians. The driver is also injured and was sent to the city hospital. Our place was closer, so critical patients were sent here."
"Okay, you arrange it. I’m ready to step in anytime. Try to give them six more pressure; this rescue is also a test for them," Liu Banxia said.
"Got it."
Qi Wentai nodded.
He knew that in the upcoming months, the six must face greater pressure independently. This counts as a transition period, and soon they will need to handle admissions independently.
Liu Banxia also put on a disposable surgical gown, ready to receive patients.
"Really quite heartless, one of them is even a five or six-year-old child," said Chen Xuehai, walking over.
"Such a young patient? President Qi didn’t tell me," Liu Banxia said.
"Whether told or not, if needed, you still have to step in," Chen Xuehai said.
"That police assistant is badly injured. The director will personally attend. One leg can’t be saved, and there seems to be internal abdominal bleeding; he’ll be sent directly to the operating room."
"Why do I know nothing?" Liu Banxia asked, exasperated.
"You were just talking to the patient’s family. Come on, the car is here, get ready for admissions," Chen Xuehai said.
Liu Banxia nodded.
Despite being an associate director now, he would follow Qi Wentai’s arrangements today for admissions.
The first to be brought in was the police assistant, Zhou Shuwen, who, after dragging the gurney, immediately rushed to the operating room.
Liu Banxia took a glance: left calf comminuted fracture, abdominal swelling, defibrillation marks on the chest, and blood at the corner of the mouth.
"Around five years old, unconscious at the scene, blunt head injury with lacerations. Blood pressure 100/70, heart rate 130, intubated on site. Initial examination, no long bone fractures," the second patient was pushed in, and the paramedic quickly introduced.
"Rescue Room One, Director Liu, Director Chen, Huang Bo with his team, it’s up to you," Qi Wentai said.
"Got it."
"Got it."
The two responded in unison, pulling the gurney directly to the rescue room.
"Around thirty-year-old male patient, father of the young patient. Unconscious at the scene, intubated, suspected cervical fracture, blood pressure 90/60, heart rate 120," the third patient was also brought in.
"Dr. Shi, Rescue Room Two. Li Hao with his team, call orthopedics," Qi Wentai said.
"Around twenty-five-year-old female, unconscious at the scene, received fluids in the ambulance. Blunt head injury, bleeding from the right ear canal. Abdominal swelling, blood pressure 100/80, heart rate 110," the fourth patient was also brought in.
"Wei Yuan receiving, Xu Yino with him, Rescue Room Three," Qi Wentai said.
"Around fifty-year-old patient, dragged by vehicle, multiple fractures, unconscious on site. Intubated on site, received fluids in the ambulance," the fifth patient was also brought in.
Qi Wentai glanced over, "Su Wenhao, Liu Yiqing receiving, call orthopedics, Rescue Room Four."
"Got it."
"Got it."
The two quickly responded and pushed the patient towards the emergency room.
Qi Wentai glanced outside and breathed a sigh of relief.
Although there were more patients behind, they weren’t brought in by the ambulance. This kind of situation could be somewhat better and relieve some pressure.
Even the three behind the five at the front could be classified as critical.
The first one needs no mention, it’s so severe that whether they can be saved is really unknown.
It’s really unexpected, the nature of this case is too severe.
"Let’s take turns seeing the rest of the patients, there are still some wounded," Qi Wentai said.
"President Qi, which other patient is critical?"
At this moment, Liu Banxia came out of the emergency room.
"Uh... rescue room four," Qi Wentai said after a brief pause.
"That child’s abdominal cavity is fine, but there’s bleeding in the chest cavity. Intubation is done, first send for a CT scan," Liu Banxia explained and then ran towards rescue room four.
"Gosh, gave me a scare, thought we couldn’t save them," Qi Wentai muttered.
"This time we practically used everyone from our emergency center, it’s no small matter. Everyone, don’t be anxious, we’ll attend to everyone as there are many injured," Wang Chao shouted.
Hearing his shout, the patients and their families who rushed over steadied somewhat in their emotions. But it was just a temporary calm, many of their injuries weren’t that light either.
Only that ambulances were given to the severely injured ones, the others would have to be deferred.
Liu Banxia, arriving at the emergency room, did not interrupt the consultations of Liu Yiqing and Su Wenhao, it was now time to see their competence.
"It’s fibrillating, I’ll do compression, you intubate, defibrillator charge 200 joules."
Right after connecting the ECG, Su Wenhao shouted, then started compressions on the patient.
"20 ml of etomidate, 100 ml of succinylcholine, intubation pack," Liu Yiqing said.
Although the patient needed emergency help, Liu Banxia didn’t step in.
Stepping in might help somewhat, but more likely it would disrupt their rhythm and cause chaos.
"Charging complete."
The nurse nearby shouted.
"Intubation’s almost ready. Wait a moment... OK."
Liu Yiqing shouted as well.
"Clear."
"Zap..."
"1 unit of epinephrine, 200 joules, I’ll continue compressions."
After putting down the defibrillator paddles, Su Wenhao said.
"Charging complete."
"Clear."
"Zap..."
"Sinus rhythm restored, check the body."
"Fractured right forearm, slight deformity in the skull. Pupillary response is not good, nystagmus, could it be intracranial hypertension caused by brain hemorrhage?" Liu Yiqing, who was examining, asked.
"Call the neurosurgeon, administer mannitol, elevate the head, shave the head," Su Wenhao calmly said.
"I’m not sure if the neurosurgeon can come in time. Prepare the medical drill. If it’s too late, I’ll perform the decompression drilling," Liu Banxia spoke.
Su Wenhao glanced at him, nodded, then auscultated the patient again, "Somewhat weak breath sounds on the left side, normal heart sounds. Low abdominal bowel sounds, post-chest X-ray, abdominal ultrasound. Teacher Liu, please help check the leg fracture."
"Alright."
Liu Banxia replied and started examining.
This patient’s condition certainly reaches a critical level, but perhaps due to the chaotic scene earlier, they weren’t brought over initially.
"The left leg fracture isn’t severe; I’ll manually reset it later," Liu Banxia said after checking.
"Everyone step back, doing X-ray."
Su Wenhao reminded.
Everyone quickly stepped back.
"Left-side hemothorax, I’ll do a chest tube. Neurosurgeon isn’t here yet, Teacher Liu, please do the decompression drilling," Su Wenhao said after glancing at the computer screen.
"OK."
Liu Banxia responded.
Now, we really have to hurry; otherwise, if the intracranial pressure becomes too high, there might not even be a chance to resuscitate the patient.
