Chapter 1302: Chapter 1302: The Nature Is Too Heinous
"I’ll go over skull drilling one more time."
Liu Banxia picked up the medical drill and spoke.
"The most basic thing is you have to drill slowly. Even though the medical drill has a safety device, when we’re drilling we still need to feel that moment when the bone suddenly gives way under our hand."
"We didn’t get a CT, so for choosing the site we can only go by the location of the wound. This patient’s skull is a bit deformed, so we have to avoid the fracture line."
As she spoke, Liu Banxia was already pressing the drill down slowly.
The sound was a bit harsh, but everyone’s eyes were fixed on that tiny drill bit. No one had even noticed when Zhang Xiao came in.
Seeing that Liu Banxia had already started drilling, Zhang Xiao relaxed a little.
Compared with other people, he was also very confident in Liu Banxia.
Plus, a few days ago Liu Banxia had done a craniotomy on-site with an ordinary power drill; now that she had a medical drill, it was even less of a problem.
As Liu Banxia’s drill stopped, the cardiac monitor started alarming, indicating the patient’s blood pressure was rising, heart rate speeding up, and the tremor of the patient’s eyeballs becoming more pronounced.
"OK, fresh bleeding, no clots. Call... Dr. Zhang—oh, you’re here, why didn’t you say anything?" Liu Banxia said helplessly.
"You were handling it pretty well, so I didn’t speak up. Any other injuries?" Zhang Xiao asked.
"Abdominal cavity, chest cavity both involved, plus the head, and multiple fractures. Do you think we can still get a CT?" Liu Banxia asked.
Zhang Xiao looked carefully at the monitor, then checked the patient’s pupils. "No problem, send him for CT first. The most dangerous thing was the intracranial bleeding; now that the intracranial pressure is under control, it’s basically fine."
"OK. Su Wenhao, Liu Yiqing, my side gig is done. The rest is all yours now." After saying that, Liu Banxia headed out.
The two of them were a bit dumbfounded. What was that supposed to mean? With a patient this badly injured, how could the big devil just walk away?
"Don’t look at me. The patient is yours. Are you going to waste time? Can the patient afford delays?" As she reached the door, Liu Banxia tossed the words over her shoulder without looking back.
Su Wenhao and Liu Yiqing glanced at each other and understood.
Today it wasn’t just them; everyone else would get this kind of treatment too. Basically, aside from situations as dangerous as what had just happened, Liu Banxia would not step in.
This was also the kind of days ahead of them—she’d already started to ratchet up the pressure.
"Damn, you’re really ruthless. I thought the patient’s injuries looked pretty serious." Zhang Xiao said as they walked out.
"Can’t be helped, they have to get through this stage." Liu Banxia said with a smile.
"When they were doing the ultrasound I took a look. There’s some free fluid in the abdomen, but it’s not very serious. When we get him on the table, if your neurosurgery team takes care of the head properly, chest tube insertion and drainage shouldn’t be a big problem either."
"Sigh... Even so, I don’t think I’d have the guts you do. Aren’t you going upstairs to check on the director’s OR? It’s a combined head–chest–abdomen operation." Zhang Xiao said.
"Director Xu already came over to help look at that broken leg. Anyway, we just do our utmost—we must provide this comrade with the best medical care."
"Yeah... it’s just so infuriating." Liu Banxia let out a sigh.
"You’ve checked the other patients too, right?" Liu Banxia asked.
"There’s another one with elevated intracranial pressure, but not as bad as the one you just handled—he’s already been sent straight to the OR. The rest are waiting on CT results. These few patients today may all end up in critical condition." Zhang Xiao said.
"What do you think was going through that guy’s head? At this point it’s not just about paying compensation. With a temper like that, he’s crossed the line into endangering public safety, hasn’t he?"
"Should be about right. I don’t know exactly how they’ll classify it legally, though. But with this many injured, it’ll probably be close." Liu Banxia said.
"Director Liu, come give us a hand. They’ll all be going up to the OR soon—hurry over and help with debridement." At this moment Wang Chao shouted.
"Damn, there are still this many patients waiting to be seen here? How many cars did he hit?" Liu Banxia asked, puzzled.
"No fewer than twenty. It was a huge SUV—really barreling through. He even drove up onto the side walkway. Later some guy kept throwing electric scooters under the car—three in a row—before he finally managed to stall it." Wang Chao said.
"That’s a hero. Is he hurt?" Liu Banxia asked.
Wang Chao jerked his chin. "He threw the scooters too hard and dislocated his right shoulder. You go ahead and see him first."
Liu Banxia nodded and went straight over to the man, giving him a thumbs-up. "Impressive. Hero. Your bill’s waived today."
"Doctor, let’s not talk about that yet. The doctor just now said my arm is fine—really fine?" the patient asked.
"Let me examine you." Liu Banxia said with a smile, then supported his right arm and placed her left hand over his shoulder joint.
"You’re fine. You just overdid it. I’m guessing that last scooter got dragged by the car’s momentum—that’s how your knee got scraped through the pants. We’ll have to check your knee later too."
"It’s actually nothing. I don’t even know where I got that kind of strength. If you asked me to throw a scooter now, I probably couldn’t lift it. I... ah, ah, ah, it really hurts."
Just as the patient was getting into his story, Liu Banxia had already reduced the joint.
"All done. I’ll put your arm in a sling first, then we’ll get a CT." Liu Banxia said.
"It’s already done? Took like two seconds?" the patient asked curiously.
"Basically just over a second. With setting bones you’ve got to be fast, accurate, and ruthless." Liu Banxia joked.
"Okay, sling’s on. Give me your registration slip. I already said today’s charges are all waived, so they’re all waived. Did you hit your head when you fell? If you did, we’ll get a head CT too."
"Didn’t hit it, didn’t hit it. Thanks, doctor." The patient was pretty happy.
"Director Liu, are you done here?" At this moment Ma Limin walked over.
"Just finished. You need to do records?" Liu Banxia asked.
Ma Limin nodded.
"What’s the situation with the guy who caused the crash?" Liu Banxia asked.
The people next to them all pricked up their ears to listen.
"Drunk driving, no license. This time just let him drink properly inside. City leaders all came over; the nature of this accident is nasty." Ma Limin said.
"Good, people like that deserve severe punishment." An old man nearby shouted.
Stuff like this really makes people furious, and that suspect is definitely going to get hit hard.
Don’t look at Liu Banxia not scrubbing in for the emergency surgeries—dealing with the crowd outside isn’t easy either. More or less they all have some injuries, and some of the wounds are pretty big and need stitching.
Right now it’s just him, Wang Chao, and Qi Wentai out here; everyone else has to go up to the OR. There’s the lead surgeon and the trainees, so it’s on the three of them to slog through.
After busying around for almost two hours, they finally finished handling all the patients out here. And that’s with Liu Banxia working at this crazy speed—otherwise it would’ve taken even longer.
"I’m actually kind of missing the interns now. We shouldn’t have sent them all upstairs." Qi Wentai said, rolling his wrists.
"Looks like things aren’t great in there; it’s been this long and nobody’s come out yet." Liu Banxia said.
"It all happened too suddenly. Especially the three patients on e-bikes—they didn’t even have time to react." Wang Chao said.
"No wonder they hauled the driver straight to the city hospital. If they’d sent him to us, he probably wouldn’t have dreamed of walking out of here. Bastard. And up till now, none of his family has come over to check on the injured."
"Put it this way: that family is seriously fucked up too. Let me rest a bit and then I’ll have my mom ask around, see just how ’awesome’ they think they are."
"No matter how awesome, it’s not going to help this time. The social impact is too big." Qi Wentai said.
"Right now I don’t even know if Director Xu can reattach that auxiliary cop brother’s leg. The difficulty level’s pretty high." Liu Banxia said.
"Only Director Xu would even try. Aren’t you going up to take a look?" Wang Chao asked.
Liu Banxia shook his head like a rattle-drum. "If I go up, they’ll definitely bring up me learning ortho surgeries again. I really don’t have that kind of energy right now."
"Tsk tsk, how many people would kill for that? Director Xu is thinking about teaching you." Wang Chao sighed.
"At the latest, the second half of next year. By then I really should start on it, otherwise I’ll be wasting the old man’s good intentions." Liu Banxia said.
Wang Chao and Qi Wentai rolled their eyes in unison.
This guy is kind of infuriating.
If he really starts digging into ortho surgery next year, that’ll mean he’s already mastered most of the pediatric general surgery procedures.
Because everyone knows what his next attack target is. He’s not going to drop it halfway and then suddenly decide to go study ortho.
All in all, in less than a year and a half he’s going to learn that much stuff and do that many surgeries. How is that not infuriating?
"President Qi, let’s not hang around him. Stay too long and he’ll piss us into a heart attack." Wang Chao said.
Qi Wentai laughed. "Whether we like it or not, we’re still working under him. His learning speed is insane; who knows when he’ll ever stop."
"Sigh... I’m still technically part of their Second Department off the books. Even more depressing." Wang Chao sighed.
"What’s there to be depressed about? You’ll get used to it gradually." Liu Banxia said.
Wang Chao decided to give up; it was impossible to communicate normally with this guy. A lot of the time his thinking was different from everyone else’s, and yet he somehow got unexpected results.
His own future days were definitely going to be a bit rough. He couldn’t just watch those six kids easily surpass him.
Even now, he had basically lost confidence in staying ahead of the Six Little Ones.
His talent’s a bit worse than theirs, plus they’ve got this final boss Liu Banxia personally coaching them. As long as he doesn’t fall too far behind them, that’ll have to be good enough.
