The Exiled Alpha's Human Male Mate.[BL]
Chapter 52: What To Give In Return."I’m coming with you." Leah stood up as well.
"No, get some rest, you don’t have to follow me everywhere. I just told you I’ll be back in a few minutes," Vincent answered immediately.
He turned and continued toward the door, but the moment he pulled it open, a powerful force slammed it shut with such violence that the glass shattered.
"If I’m not coming with you, then you’re not going anywhere! Do you think I don’t know where you’re going?!" Leah screamed through the deafening crash.
Vincent turned back on instinct, only to find Leah standing there with both hands suspended in the air, as though she were casting some kind of spell.
Shock seized him. He couldn’t move, speak, or even breathe.
Leah immediately dropped her hands, breathing heavily.
"What was that?" Vincent finally asked, his voice carrying the same shock that was plainly written across his face.
"I... I don’t know. Strong wind," Leah stammered.
"Strong wind?" Vincent laughed, but there was no humour in it. He stepped toward her, the faint amusement disappearing from his expression as his eyes narrowed. "Don’t fuck with me, Leah. Answer me right now. What was that?"
"I don’t know. Why are you asking me?" Leah shouted, but the panic she was struggling to conceal was becoming increasingly evident in her expression.
"Because you did it!" Vincent’s voice rose, his restraint rapidly fraying. "You want to play dumb with me?"
He had barely finished speaking when his phone began to ring in his pocket.
His attention immediately shifted to the device, and only one person came to mind.
Bryce.
Vincent did not have many people who called him constantly without some important matter to discuss, and even those who did would never call him at this hour.
"You better have the answers when I get back, and don’t make the mistake of leaving this house," he warned Leah.
The words came out with a commanding authority that was unlike the way he had ever spoken to her before.
His voice was steeped in Alpha dominance, the force of it accompanied by pheromones he had always restrained around her until now.
He turned away and walked out of the house, leaving the question of what had just happened between them unresolved.
By the time he reached his car, the call had already ended. He started the engine and pulled away, immediately dialing Bryce’s number as he drove toward the city.
The call went through, but Bryce did not answer.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
He called a third time, and when Bryce continued to ignore the call, unease began to settle heavily in his chest. His mind immediately started running through every possibility, wondering whether something had happened to him, whether the Sinclairs had somehow discovered what he was trying to do.
After a while, a message finally appeared on his screen.
~So now you decide to call back after ignoring my message and call.
Vincent read it and immediately typed his response with one hand while continuing to drive.
~So you didn’t pick just now because you thought I was ignoring you? How about when you finish throwing those little tantrums, give me a call back so we can discuss your freedom.
He pressed send without giving himself time to reconsider it, and almost immediately, his phone began ringing again.
Vincent answered and pressed the phone to his ear.
"Already done throwing the tantrums? That was fast."
"Are you fucking going to do it or not?" Bryce demanded from the other end.
"Are you asking or commanding me?" Vincent replied, unable to keep the amusement from his voice.
"Forget it!" Bryce answered and ended the call abruptly.
Vincent lowered the phone and stared at the darkened screen in disbelief before shaking his head, a quiet chuckle escaping him despite himself.
He dialed Bryce again, and this time the call was answered almost immediately, as though Bryce had been waiting for him to call back because he already knew that Vincent would.
"Mood swings?" Vincent asked the instant the call connected again, the amusement in his voice deepening as he caught the edge of irritation in Bryce’s tone.
"Are you coming or not?" Bryce demanded, his patience clearly wearing thin.
"Why don’t you just walk right out?" Vincent said as he drove faster toward the city. "You have enough strength to defeat all those humans that are probably placed there everywhere to stop you. Just shove one after another aside as you walk right out. He won’t let them shoot you, will he? Besides, even if they shoot you, the bullet won’t affect you or kill you. There are specific bullets that can kill us, and I bet they don’t have those."
His voice remained matter-of-fact as he explained it, as though escaping a house guarded by humans were as simple as walking through an open doorway.
"Then I’ll meet you outside the gate and pick you up."
"I don’t feel any strength inside me right now. I feel sick!" Bryce answered, frustration thick in his voice.
Vincent exhaled, "Okay, just be ready, then. I’ll be there in twenty or thirty minutes. Send me the location."
"Okay," Bryce answered quietly this time.
Amusement returned to Vincent’s voice. "What did you say the payment was?"
"You read the message, stop messing with me," Bryce replied.
"Let’s be honest, Mr. Jones," Vincent said, unable to resist pushing the matter further. "What do you have that you could possibly give me to satisfy me for my help, if not what you excluded?"
The bluntness of his own words struck Vincent even as he said them. He was almost unable to believe that it was him speaking like that.
He had never been the kind of person to speak that way, especially about something like this.
Bryce did not answer, instead, he ended the call again.
Vincent looked down at the screen in disbelief, then shook his head as a low chuckle escaped his lips.
He knew Bryce had hung up on him again.
He continued driving toward the city, waiting for Bryce to send the location while pushing the car faster in an effort to make good on the twenty or thirty minutes he had promised.
His attention remained fixed on the road ahead, but his thoughts strayed back to what Leah had done only minutes earlier.
The way she had raised her hands, the violent force that had slammed the door shut, and the glass that had shattered under the impact.
That had not been an ordinary gust of wind, and the more he thought about it, the more certain he became that Leah was hiding something from him.
It had looked almost like magic.
The thought made him frown as another possibility occurred to him. Was Leah secretly part witch and part wolf?
He had no answer.
What Vincent did not know was that he was, in fact, dangerously close to the truth.
Leah had used witch magic.
She possessed the power of a witch, but she was not part of the witches, nor did she belong to their kind. She was purely a wolf.
