Leah had acquired that magic specifically for Vincent.
As a female beta with neither pheromones nor any particularly alluring scent, she had grown up knowing that the best she could hope for was to be blessed with an Alpha mate who might compensate for what she lacked.
And when she discovered that her fated mate was a beta like herself, a man whose life seemed every bit as ordinary and uneventful as hers threatened to be, she rejected him without hesitation and had him killed.
She had been consumed by fury at the Moon Goddess for giving her such a miserable fate while everyone else in her family appeared destined for greatness.
To Leah, it was an unforgivable injustice.
Her sisters had inherited the blood she had been denied, while she had been left with nothing that could distinguish her from the weakest members of their pack.
She knew her mother would have been even more disappointed if she ever discovered that she had been given a beta as her mate.
Even her sisters already looked down on her, and Leah had no doubt that knowing the truth would only give them another reason to do so.
Her mother had been an Alpha heir herself, and fate had bound her to a beta. She had never truly accepted that match.
She looked down on her husband, ruled their household according to her own wishes, and made it clear that no one was permitted to challenge her authority.
Even her husband, despite being her fated mate, had learned to obey her without objection.
She gave birth to her first child, a girl who inherited her Alpha blood and emerged as a female Alpha.
Leah’s mother had been immensely proud, parading her daughter as proof of the strength that ran through her, she even declared that she wanted all her children to be girls, strong women within the packs, women who could command the same respect she did.
Second born was Leah.
Another girl, but this time, the child carried none of her mother’s Alpha blood.
Leah was purely a beta, having inherited that trait from her father. Her mother despised it with everything in her.
She made the girl feel as though her very existence were an embarrassment. Leah gradually started feeling a deep resentment toward her own father simply because he was a beta.
The third child was another girl, and once again, the Moon Goddess seemed determined to remind Leah’s mother of what she considered her family’s rightful inheritance.
The girl possessed a substantial portion of her mother’s Alpha blood and became a female Alpha as well.
But the fourth child was something far worse than Leah’s mother could ever have imagined.
She had never wanted a son. She wanted daughters, strong women who could produce powerful pheromones, command attention whenever they entered a room, and carry the family name with pride.
Instead, she gave birth to a boy.
And not merely a boy.
An omega.
It was a devastating humiliation to her, made even worse by the fact that she could not comprehend where that omega blood had come from.
She could have tolerated an omega daughter, perhaps. But what was she supposed to do with an omega son?
Apparently, an omega son was little better than a human: weak, incapable of commanding respect, and unworthy of a place within a family that had become renowned throughout the packs for producing female Alphas.
Allowing him to grow up openly within their household, let alone allowing the pack to know about him, would be an unbearable disgrace.
So she erased him.
She announced that her fourth child had died during childbirth and claimed that she had buried him.
In reality, the boy had been discarded in the human world, abandoned in the very place where she believed someone as weak as him belonged.
That left only Leah and her father as the weakest members of the family which was famous for its female Alphas.
Leah’s sisters, meanwhile, were relentlessly pursued by male Alphas and powerful families from across the packs.
Their mother took enormous pride in them, carrying them from one gathering to another and displaying their strength as though their accomplishments were entirely her own.
One of Leah’s sisters was especially blessed in her eyes. Her fated mate was an Alpha.
Leah could barely stomach the injustice of it.
How could her sister have been born with Alpha blood and then receive an Alpha as her mate as well, while Leah had been born a mere beta and was destined to spend her life beside another beta?
She cursed the Moon Goddess until she had nothing left to say.
As for her younger sister, her fated mate was a beta, just like Leah’s, but their mother arranged for her to marry into an Alpha family as the first wife of an Alpha.
The man’s true mate was brought into the household as a second wife, but only for the purpose of bearing children. Once she had fulfilled that duty, she was given a fortune and ordered to leave.
Leah’s sister remained as the Alpha’s only wife.
Leah considered telling her mother about her true mate, hoping against hope that perhaps her mother would do the same fake her.
But she already knew that her mother would never do that for her.
So she decided to take matters into her own hands.
Vincent had always been her dream man.
Back then, he had been a young, striking Alpha destined to become the next leader of the pack once his father stepped down.
She first met him at her sister’s wedding, and from that moment onward, she began inserting herself into his life.
She clung to him whenever she could, slowly charming her way into his friendship until that friendship eventually developed into a romantic relationship.
She wanted Vincent to love her so deeply that everyone would believe without hesitation that they were true mates.
The problem was that Vincent had never been particularly eager to pursue a romantic relationship with her.
No matter how carefully she maneuvered herself into his life, there remained a hesitation in him.
Desperation eventually drove her somewhere she knew she should never have gone.
The witches’ territories.
The ancient hostility between witches and wolves made such a visit forbidden, but Leah was willing to risk it.
She sought out the witches because she wanted them to forge a bond between her and Vincent, something powerful enough to convince everyone, including Vincent himself, that she was his true mate.
But it failed.
They could not create the bond she wanted, but they offered her something else.
They managed to manipulate the magic enough to cultivate powerful romantic feelings between them.
~
All of that was something Vincent had no idea about, and as he drove, he found himself wondering just how much he truly knew about the woman he had claimed to love for all those years.
He didn’t even know something as fundamental as the identity of her real mate, let alone how she had managed to stay away from him.
Vincent finally brought the car to a stop when he reached his destination, pulling up directly in front of the gates of the Sinclairs’ residence.
He glanced at the time on the dashboard.
9:01 p.m.
He switched off the engine, opened the door, and stepped out of the car.
