Bryce ignored Vincent’s correction and pressed him harder for an explanation of what he had just done.

"Aren’t they going to remember that you were there? That we were there?"

"Actually, I’ve been wondering..." Vincent replied, intentionally sidestepping the question once again as he started the car. "Have you been dating the whole family? Because they all certainly seemed determined not to let you go."

Bryce fell silent and turned his attention toward the window.

If Vincent had no intention of giving him a straightforward answer, there was little point in continuing to press him.

Vincent noticed the change in his demeanor. A quiet sigh escaped him before he finally decided to answer.

"It’s an Alpha thing. Most Alphas possess certain abilities beyond what the other ranks naturally have. Those abilities work particularly well on humans because they have absolutely no supernatural resistance against them. That doesn’t mean they’re ineffective against our own kind, though. They work on wolves too; they simply require considerably more strength when used against another supernatural being."

His eyes remained fixed on the road, his hands steady upon the steering wheel as he continued explaining.

"And no, they won’t remember that we were there. Their memories of you will be erased completely."

A faint, knowing smirk curved his lips.

"The amusing part is that your so-called boyfriend wasn’t there to receive the same gift. So when he comes home and starts asking where you are, he’ll look completely insane to the rest of them. They’ll tell him there was never anyone like you in that house."

Some part of Bryce felt relieved by the thought of Dave’s family forgetting him entirely, but the other part of it unsettled him.

Dave would return to a house where everyone would insist that Bryce had never existed. He would definitely break down, and eventually, he might become precisely the kind of wreck his brothers had wanted him to be.

Bryce’s thoughts shifted abruptly to Dave’s brothers.

He remembered the way they had behaved throughout dinner, repeatedly checking their phones as though they were expecting some crucial piece of information.

His heart seemed to stop for a fraction of a second before beginning to hammer violently against his ribs.

Where had Dave gone after their fight?

The question struck him with such force that the words escaped before he had even consciously decided to say them.

"We’ve got to find him."

"What?" Vincent asked, turning his attention toward him for a moment.

"Dave..." Bryce swallowed, the urgency in his voice becoming more apparent. "I... I need to find him."

"Are you serious right now?"

Vincent’s fingers tightened around the steering wheel.

The change in him was immediate. The easy, almost unbothered attitude he had carried throughout the evening vanished, replaced by something far colder.

Even the temperature inside the car seemed to drop with the shift in his mood.

"You mean you called me all the way here to come and take you out of that place, to get you away from him, only to sit here and think, Oh... I still love him. I can’t just leave like that. Let me go back and find him?"

Jealousy threaded through Vincent’s words, thickening his frustration until neither emotion could be mistaken for anything else.

"That’s not the case," Bryce said quickly. "His brothers... they’re planning to kill him."

Vincent didn’t flinch, he didn’t hesitate either.

"Isn’t that good news? You’ll finally be completely free. It wouldn’t be you who killed him anyway, so where’s the problem? Stop acting like some helpless human because you’re not one. Besides, if his own brothers are willing to kill him, then he can’t possibly be good for you. He must be terrible to his own family. What makes you think he would ever be any different with you?"

Bryce had no immediate answer.

Because Vincent wasn’t entirely wrong.

There was no denying what Dave had done to him. There was no denying the suffocating control and the manipulation.

If Dave died, Bryce would finally be free without having to carry the guilt of being the person who ended his life.

But Dave had done nothing to deserve death at the hands of his brothers.

The twins were the ones plotting against him. They were the ones who had decided that his existence was an inconvenience they wanted removed.

Whatever Dave had done to Bryce, whatever kind of man he was, that did not make his brothers’ actions justifiable.

Dave might have been a complete mess, a psychopath, perhaps, but he had once belonged to him. They had shared the best of their lives together.

He might have spent the past few days wishing for freedom from him, but he refused to obtain that freedom by allowing his own family to murder him.

Bryce lowered his gaze, his thoughts becoming increasingly tangled.

He hated that despite everything Dave had done, some part of him still refused to abandon him like that.

"If you’re not going to help me find him, then stop the car. I’ll do it myself."

The moment the words left Bryce’s lips, he wished he could take them back.

Every instinct in him wanted Vincent to refuse, to tell him he wasn’t going anywhere alone and simply take him to find Dave.

Bryce knew perfectly well that the way he had spoken was likely to provoke Vincent, but pride kept him from pleading for his help.

He could simply not bring himself to beg.

The car came to an abrupt halt, and Bryce’s breath seemed to stop with it.

"Fine. Go on. Go find him so he can drag you back into that estate and you can live happily ever after."

Vincent’s voice had turned colder.

"I don’t know what he did to you, but I know he must have done something to hurt you, and that’s why you wanted to leave him in the first place, and whatever he did, it won’t be the last time he does it. I’m also certain that if he finds out you were planning to leave, he’ll never let you step outside that estate again."

He fixed Bryce with a hard stare, "If you leave this car right now, don’t ever call me again and ask me to do something like this. The full moon is tomorrow night, so suit yourself."

Bryce said nothing.

A sudden, pounding ache erupted behind his temples, and his thoughts seemed to splinter in every direction at once.

Too many things demanded his attention, too many consequences were converging on him simultaneously, until he could barely distinguish one thought from another.

His body had begun to tremble almost imperceptibly beneath the strain, overwhelmed by everything that had happened and by the impossible choice now being forced upon him.

The full moon.

Tomorrow night, he was supposedly going to transform into an animal and begin hunting, something he neither wanted nor understood.

He still had no idea how the transformation worked, what it would feel like, or how much control he would retain once it began.

The uncertainty alone was terrifying.

And then there was Dave who was being hunted without even knowing it.

Then there was the other possibility- going after Dave would mean risking everything. He could be dragged back into the Sinclair residence, locked inside again, and perhaps never allowed to leave.

And Vincent had just made his own position unmistakably clear.

He would not help him again.

Bryce’s chest tightened as the weight of it all descended upon him at once. Whichever direction he turned, something waited to trap him.

If he abandoned Dave, he would have to live with knowing that he had left him to be murdered.

If he went after him, he risked surrendering his own freedom and returning to the very life he had fought so desperately to escape.

The pressure became unbearable.

His head spun. He suddenly felt dizzy, the world around him seeming to lose its stability.
