Bryce didn’t leave the car, even after Vincent had brought it to a halt and made it clear that he was free to go.
He remained rooted to his seat, his hand moving to press against his stomach as he struggled to bring his increasingly unruly body under control.
The panic had spread through him so thoroughly that it seemed to have taken possession of every nerve, leaving him restless, nauseated, and incapable of thinking with any clarity.
"Just look at you." Vincent’s gaze lingered over him, his expression hardening at the sight of his condition. "You’re clearly not in any state to be doing this, yet all you can think about is finding a man who will only make your life miserable."
Resentment, jealousy, and mounting frustration were hopelessly entangled in his voice.
"Just help me find him." Bryce insisted, forcing himself to meet Vincent’s eyes despite the dizziness beginning to cloud his vision. "You can increase the price of whatever you want me to give you in return."
"You seriously think I’m here because you promised to give me something in return?" Vincent asked.
His voice dropped, and beneath the irritation, there was a distinct note of disappointment. "I’m here because I want to be here, not because you think you’ll work your ass off trying to repay me with some useless amount of money."
Bryce looked at him with difficulty, his condition making it increasingly difficult to concentrate.
"I never said it had to be money." Bryce’s patience too deteriorated further. "I said name anything you want in return, except sex."
Vincent stared at him for a moment before leaning closer, his brows drawing together and his eyes narrowing.
"And I keep asking you... what else do you possibly have that you could give me that would satisfy me?"
Bryce’s mind went blank.
He searched desperately for an answer, trying to think of what Vincent could possibly accept in place of the one thing he had already refused to offer.
But then, unexpectedly, his gaze fell lower, catching on the unmistakable bulge beneath Vincent’s pants.
His eyes widened in disbelief.
What was it about him that made these two men react this way, even when he was doing absolutely nothing?
Why did their attention keep returning to the same thing, as though his mere presence was enough to provoke a desire he didn’t even want to encourage?
Seeing Vincent like that made Bryce realize exactly what he wanted from him. Vincent’s mind was clearly fixated on it, to the point that Bryce was beginning to understand that no alternative he offered would satisfy him.
Vincent wanted precisely what Bryce had already refused to give.
"I already told you, I’m not giving you my body to satisfy yourself with it again," he said, his voice tightening with exasperation. "I’ll say this for the last time, so you can stop expecting what happened that night to happen again. I don’t sleep with someone I’m not entitled to. I don’t do casual sex or whatever the hell people call it, so give up already."
With that, Bryce reached for the door and pushed it open.
Or tried to.
The door refused to move.
Vincent had already locked every door in the car.
Bryce turned sharply toward him, but before he could get a word out, Vincent spoke.
"Who says I only want casual sex?" he asked. "And who says we’re not entitled to each other? Aren’t we mates?"
"Mates?"
The word tore something open inside Bryce.
"You rejected me without even a single warning!" his anger finally broke free, his voice rising before he could restrain it. "You didn’t even tell me it would hurt that much. I had no idea it would hurt to the point where I thought I was going to die, and now you’re sitting here claiming we’re mates?"
The memory of that day surged back with such force that Bryce trembled, his anger becoming almost impossible to contain.
Vincent remained remarkably composed.
"Our mate bond isn’t completely gone," he explained, his voice almost unnervingly calm in contrast to Bryce’s fury. "That’s why you’re still drawn to me, and why you still have the mark.
Or do you want me to remove the suppressor so you can confirm for yourself that you’re still drawn to me?"
Bryce stared at him incredulously.
"You said I have feelings for you, and that’s why I still feel this way and still have the mark. Now you’re telling me it’s because the bond wasn’t completely severed?
I’m not in the mood for this, Vincent. I don’t have time for your little shitty games, the ones you clearly enjoy while watching me squirm. And I’m certainly not in any position to deal with another psycho, so unlock the car and let me leave."
"Where do you want to look for him?"
The question came so unexpectedly that Bryce stared at Vincent, momentarily taken aback by the abrupt change in subject.
Bryce decided not to dwell on it. He pulled out his phone and began tracing Dave’s whereabouts, his fingers moving quickly across the screen while a desperate hope tightened inside his chest.
His heart was pounding so violently as he concentrated on the location tracker, praying that it would connect, praying that Dave would still be alive.
"Is that your heart beating that unnaturally fast," Vincent suddenly asked, almost casually, "or am I hearing two hearts?"
Bryce paused for a second.
Now that Vincent had drawn his attention to it, he could hear it too.
His heartbeat had become strange.
It no longer seemed like a single rhythm. There seemed to be another beat intertwined with it, distinct yet strangely synchronized, as though two separate hearts were struggling to occupy the same rhythm within his chest.
Vincent listened for another moment.
"If you were a woman, I would’ve been convinced you were pregnant, carrying my pup." Vincent added dreamily, his voice softening with an emotion Bryce couldn’t quite decipher.
"So you can take the egg from me and have it put in your wife?" The words came before Bryce could stop them.
Vincent offered no reply.
