When Vincent arrived at the Sinclair residence, he immediately noticed that there were far more people gathered around the compound than there had been the previous time he came.

It must have been because of the funeral, he thought, but he didn’t spare the thought any further attention.

This time, he didn’t hesitate.

He stopped the world around him, freezing everyone in place, then strode through the gate without slowing down. He didn’t have even a minute to waste.

On the way there, he had called Jim and asked him to explain exactly where the dungeon was located inside the house.

Jim had given him clear directions, and once Vincent entered the residence, he followed them through the hallways, passing the motionless bodies of the people caught in his spell, until he finally reached the basement and found the large iron door.

He summoned his strength, and his wolf responded without hesitation, as though it, too, supported his decision to get Dave out of there.

"Move back if you’re at the door," he called, rapping his knuckles against the metal to warn Dave.

He struck the door with his shoulder, putting his entire strength behind the blow. The heavy iron barely shifted.

Vincent hit it again.

And again.

Each impact forced it open by another fraction, the door so ridiculously heavy that he began wondering whether it had really been built to contain a human being.

Finally, he managed to create an opening wide enough to squeeze through.

Dave was sitting on the floor inside.

Blood had seeped through the makeshift bandage wrapped around his wound again, which appeared to have been tied with a piece of his own shirt.

He was shirtless, pale, and looked as though he could barely keep himself conscious.

His eyes opened slightly wider when he saw Vincent, though even that small reaction seemed to require an effort.

A foul smell hung heavily in the confined space.

Vincent immediately covered his nose.

"What is that smell?" he asked, covering his nose.

"How come you’re here?" Dave asked weakly. "Are you here to kill me too?"

Vincent ignored the question.

"Get up."

"I can’t." Dave looked at him as though the answer should have been obvious. "Can’t you see? My leg is swollen. I’m in pain. I feel dizzy. I wanna die."

"That’s probably the best solution at this point," Vincent said as he stepped closer.

He removed his suit jacket, held it between his legs, and pulled off his shirt. Dave watched him silently, his eyes briefly moving over Vincent’s toned torso before he looked away.

Vincent slipped the jacket back on, then used his shirt to cover Dave’s wound again. He tightened the makeshift bandage firmly around him.

"At this point, I’m wondering whether you’re going to help me or just drag me down," he muttered.

"Help you with what?"

Dave barely finished the question before Vincent bent down and lifted him into his arms as though he weighed nothing.

Dave froze in shock.

"Put me down," he protested immediately. "I know you’re here with Bryce, and I’d rather crawl on my knees than let him see me like this. I’m not that weak."

"Don’t worry. He’s not anywhere near here," Vincent replied bluntly as he carried him toward the exit.

Dave’s expression shifted slightly at the answer, but Vincent didn’t elaborate.

He couldn’t risk letting Dave see the people frozen throughout the house, so he kept the spell in place as he carried him outside and toward the car.

Once they reached it, Vincent opened the rear door and carefully placed Dave inside. He shut the door, walked around to the driver’s side, and got behind the wheel.

Only then did he release the spell.

The world resumed around them.

Dave blinked, looking around in confusion as though he couldn’t understand how he had suddenly gone from the dungeon to the backseat of a moving car.

He turned toward the residence through the window. People were moving around the compound as though nothing unusual had happened. From the looks of it, no one had even noticed that they had walked straight out of the house.

He even spotted the woman he had believed to be his mother all his life.

Anger surged through him with such violence that his fingers instinctively curled into fists before he even realized it, but he forced the thought aside, refusing to dwell on it now.

"How did we get here?"

"Not important."

Vincent’s voice barely reached him, intentionally kept low, tired, and bored.

"I know you’re here because of him. Where is he?" Dave asked, his voice level.

"And what exactly do you mean by I’m here because of him?" Vincent asked in the same controlled tone.

"I know you wouldn’t have helped me out if it weren’t for him."

"You’re right. I’m here because of him. I’m getting you out of there so you can help me find him, and once I do, you leave him alone. He knows what he wants, and if what he wants is to be away from you, then you need to respect that. He isn’t your property."

"What do you mean, help you find him? He’s not with you?" Dave asked, alarm flashing across his face.

He sat up despite the pain that shot through him.

"No." Vincent’s answer was simple.

"No? Are you fucking kidding me right now? I’ve been sitting there completely at ease because I knew he was with you, which meant he was safe. And now you’re telling me he isn’t with you? Those lunatics must have abducted him. Turn around. We’re going back."

Dave gripped the door handle as though he were ready to force the door open and get out despite his condition.

"They don’t have him. He left on his own," Vincent said, continuing to drive.

He was certain those people didn’t remember Bryce, for that reason, they wouldn’t go after him unless they somehow began learning about him and discovered who he was.

"How do you know that? Stop the car, Vincent, and turn around. I’m telling you, if he’s missing, then they must have taken him. They want to destroy me, and they know how important he is to me. They wouldn’t leave him out of it."

Dave’s voice grew increasingly impatient.

"And I’m telling you they don’t have him. He left on his own. He planned to."

"And I’m asking how sure you are about that! Do you realize how serious this is?"

"I know he left willingly because he lied about his mother being sick. It turns out his mother isn’t sick, and he isn’t there."

"Are you implying that he told you he was going to see his mother? Because he would never go back to that place. He hated it more than hell, if hell actually exists. That was a blatant lie."

The certainty in Dave’s voice stirred something inside Vincent. He spoke about Bryce as though he knew him intimately, as though he knew exactly what Bryce would do without needing to think twice.

And yet, that was precisely why Vincent had come for him.

Dave knew Bryce.

Perhaps he knew him well enough to help find him.

"Do you have any idea where he might have decided to go?" Vincent asked.

Before he could finish, Dave interrupted with another question.

"If he deceived you and walked away, does that mean he doesn’t want to be with you either? And here I was, thinking he left me because he wanted to be with you. It’s..."

"Is that important right now?" Vincent cut in. "And in any case, he was running away from you."

He couldn’t help shooting back.

Dave didn’t argue.

"My phone died. When I charge it, I might be able to track his whereabouts," he said instead, abandoning the argument as though it had never happened.

He leaned back, wincing faintly before continuing.

"It’s better that he’s wherever he is right now than being in that demonic residence. I’m actually glad he ran when he did. I don’t even want to imagine what could have happened to him if he’d stayed there."

Vincent’s fingers tightened around the steering wheel.
