The Exiled Alpha's Human Male Mate.[BL]
Chapter 72: Impossible To Intimidate."Anything?" Vincent asked the moment he received the call, pressing the phone against his ear.
"A lot, actually, sir." The voice on the other end came in a whisper, immediately making Vincent wonder where the man was speaking from.
Jim and Kyle were two of the people Vincent trusted most. He could rely on them for almost anything; both men possessed skills, strategies, and tactics suited to situations most people wouldn’t even know how to handle, so Vincent had no intention of losing either of them.
"Where are you speaking from?" Vincent asked before Jim could say anything else.
"Sinclair residence." Jim whispered again.
Vincent’s expression hardened.
"Are you completely out of your mind? If Bryce isn’t there, which I’m certain he isn’t, then get out of there."
He ended the call before Jim could respond and dropped the phone onto the table before sinking into the couch.
He had intended to leave and join the search himself, but he needed a moment to organize his thoughts first, to make some sense of where else Bryce could possibly have gone.
He picked up his phone again and tried Bryce’s number.
The result was exactly the same.
Nothing.
The call simply failed to reach him.
After several minutes, his phone vibrated again, Jim’s name flashed accross the screen.
Vincent frowned.
Since he was certain Jim had found nothing about Bryce, he nearly ignored the call. Yet after a moment’s hesitation, he answered, intending only to give him another instruction.
"Kyle is already out there with some people looking for Bryce. Join them and make sure you find him before evening. Use every method you can think of to track him down.
He must have paid for something using an account that reflects his name. Check everything. Do whatever you have to."
"Yes, sir. I’ll join them right away, but..." Jim hesitated before continuing, "didn’t you want to hear about Dave Sinclair too?"
This time, his voice was no longer a whisper.
"I wanted to know whether Bryce was there. Anything else is none of our business,"
Vincent’s tone came out far more forcefully than necessary, as though he were trying to convince both Jim and himself that he had no interest in whatever information the man was holding back.
"Got it."
Jim ended the call.
Vincent remained seated for a moment, but sitting still soon became impossible. He stood and began walking across the room, taking three steps in one direction before turning and walking back.
He repeated it again, then again, until the restless movement became a continuous pace across the room.
He had never paced like this before.
There was too much noise in his head, and now whatever story Jim had been trying to tell him about Dave had forced its way into that chaos for reasons Vincent couldn’t quite explain.
Dave could die for all he cared.
So why was he bothered by whatever was happening to him?
It had to be because of Bryce.
That was the only explanation Vincent could give himself.
If Bryce discovered that Dave had finally died after trying so desperately to help him, it could hurt him. It could leave him broken, and Vincent didn’t know whether Bryce would recover from something like that easily.
Besides, why would Vincent want Dave dead?
He needed him alive.
If Bryce ever chose Vincent, he wanted him to make that choice while Dave was still there. He didn’t want Bryce to choose him simply because Dave no longer existed.
That was reasonable.
At least, Vincent told himself it was.
He knew his explanations didn’t make much sense, and perhaps he shouldn’t have been trying so hard to justify them in the first place, but he decided to accept them anyway.
He stopped pacing.
His hand went to his phone again.
He stared at the screen for a moment before making another call to Jim.
The man answered quickly.
"Is he still alive?"
Jim sighed on the other end.
"Oh my God, sir, thank you for asking, because I really needed to get everything I just learned off my chest and share it with someone. I can’t keep it to myself anymore."
Vincent almost corrected him, reminding him that he had asked only one question, but he kept quiet.
Jim, as though afraid of being stopped, launched into his explanation immediately, speaking without pause.
"Yes, he’s still alive, but he’s locked in something that looks like a dungeon inside the house. The doors are heavily secured, and there are enough guards surrounding the place to give you that impression.
Apparently, his father didn’t simply die in an accident. That accident was planned by the twins, his wife and their daughter."
Jim paused briefly, as though even he was still trying to process everything he had uncovered.
"Turns out the woman isn’t Dave’s biological mother, and that’s where most of the mess happening in that family started. His father got another woman pregnant while he already had a wife and three children. From what I’ve gathered, his wife demanded that he kill the other woman. Apparently, that was the only way she would forgive him and agree to have their family back together."
Vincent’s brows drew together.
"Sinclair Senior agreed to kill the woman, but only on one condition: they had to accept Dave as one of their own, treat him exactly like the rest of the family, and never tell him that the woman he knew as his mother wasn’t actually his biological mother.
They argued about it, but apparently the old man made it clear that if they refused, he would throw every one of them out of his residence without giving them a single thing. The only person who agreed to treat Dave as family would be allowed to stay.
They had no choice.
So all these years, Dave never knew that the woman he called his mother wasn’t actually his mother. Everyone in that house treated him warmly on the surface, but that woman and her children were furious with Sinclair Senior to the point where they wanted to kill him and take everything that belonged to him, especially after he declared that he could disown all of them simply because of the son he had outside the marriage.
From what I heard, the old man loved Dave, even going so far as to call him Sinclair Junior.
And what angered that family even more was that the old man wanted to leave his entire business empire to Dave.
Apparently, he believed Dave was tough enough to handle it because he took after him. He handled things exactly the way his father did, and that seemed to be one of the main reasons Sinclair Senior valued him so much."
Jim exhaled.
"He wanted Dave’s twin brothers to work under him while Dave himself took control of the entire empire. The family couldn’t tolerate that anymore. They wanted Dave gone because he was standing between them and everything they wanted.
It was difficult to kill the old man, even though they wanted to. He was a mafia boss, he wasn’t someone who could easily be trapped. But they never stopped trying. Eventually, they got their chance and finished him off."
Jim’s voice hardened with disbelief.
"And now they don’t even plan to kill Dave. They want to keep him there helpless. He has no one left to rely on. Even his own men were used in the attempt to kill him, and he still hasn’t completely recovered from his injuries. They even ripped away his bandages as though they wanted to make his condition worse."
Jim finally fell silent for a second.
"I honestly have never met people like that."
Vincent stood completely still, his phone pressed against his ear.
All he could think about was how relieved he was that Bryce had asked him to get him out of that place before everything had spiraled this far.
What if the chaos that he had never been meant to become part of had ended up killing him?
"How did you know all that?" Vincent asked. The question was almost irrelevant because he knew his men had their ways of gathering information, but he needed to say something, anything, just to show that he was still there and listening.
"I replaced the dungeon guard with myself. I was there when they said all of that, and I was there when they ripped the bandage away. They did it mercilessly because they wanted Dave to sign away all the wealth his father had put under his name, but Dave simply laughed and told them he’d rather die than ever do that.
In fact, he said he would take whatever little the old man had left them as well. That’s when they got violent with him."
It didn’t surprise Vincent that Dave would laugh even in a situation like that, or that he would deliberately say something that would only provoke his enemies further.
By now, he already knew that Dave was stubborn and nearly impossible to intimidate.
"Okay. Just... find Bryce."
"Okay."
Vincent ended the call once again.
He remained still for another moment before taking his car keys and phone and leaving the house.
He told himself he would get Dave out of there. After all, Dave could be useful to him right now.
He knew Bryce better than anyone else did, and perhaps he would have an idea where Bryce might have gone, or at the very least, understand him well enough to narrow down the places he might have thought of going.
