The Exiled Alpha's Human Male Mate.[BL]
Chapter 76: "Is She Having A Miscarriage...?!"Bryce knew that if he continued trying to evade the man without giving him any reason to believe he had mistaken him for someone else, the man would only become more suspicious.
He needed to convince the man that he had mistaken him for someone else. The idea came to him almost instantly, along with a way to make it convincing.
He did not stop to think it through, he simply halted in the middle of the street and clutched his stomach as though a sudden pain had seized him.
"Ahh... my baby..." he whimpered, wincing as he bent slightly over himself.
No one seemed to hear him, or perhaps they heard and simply chose not to care.
Bryce knew how cruel and indifferent a city could be. He had lived in one for years, long enough to understand that most people were perfectly capable of witnessing someone else’s distress and continuing with their own.
He repeated the words, louder this time, allowing another painful expression to cross his face before swaying unsteadily as though he were about to collapse.
That finally caught someone’s attention.
"Miss, are you alright?"
Bryce didn’t answer the woman directly. He continued clutching his stomach and repeating the same words, forcing his voice into the higher, softer tone he imagined a woman might use under similar circumstances.
He kept the performance convincing enough that a few more people began approaching, their curiosity drawing them closer.
The man following him had stopped too.
Bryce could hear his thoughts, and the disappointment running through them told him that the man was beginning to suspect he had followed the wrong person.
The pregnancy crisis he was feigning must have been what made the man begin to doubt himself.
Bryce looked and sounded so convincingly like a young pregnant woman in distress that it was easy to believe something was wrong with the baby.
"Is she having a miscarriage...?"
A miscarriage?
Bryce cursed silently at the thought. He didn’t even want to hear such a possibility attached to himself, even in jest.
"Put away your phones, cowards!"
A man’s voice suddenly cut through the gathering crowd.
"Instead of finding a way to get her to the hospital, you’re here raising your phones and asking if she’s having a miscarriage?"
Before Bryce could react, the man stepped forward and caught him, lifting him off his feet with surprising ease before carrying him toward a nearby cab.
Bryce’s heart thudded as the ground disappeared beneath him.
Where the hell was this man taking him?
The thought lasted only a second before he dismissed it. Whatever the stranger intended, Bryce no longer felt helpless.
He could feel strength coursing through his body, and if the man attempted anything foolish, he was certain he could stop him with one hand.
The man placed him in the back seat of the cab before moving around to the driver’s side.
"Where are you taking me...?" Bryce murmured, keeping his voice strained with feigned pain while clutching his stomach.
"Hospital," the man answered as he started the engine. "Just hold on for a little while. The hospital isn’t far from here."
"Thank you... Ahh..."
The cab pulled into traffic, and Bryce immediately looked through the closed window, searching the street behind them.
The man was gone.
Relief washed through him.
Of course he had lost him. After witnessing the supposed pregnancy and seeing him being taken away for medical attention, the man must have finally concluded that he had followed the wrong person. Bryce almost smiled at how easily the disguise had worked.
He allowed himself to relax as the cab continued along the congested road, weaving through traffic whenever the driver found an opening.
He even stopped pretending to be in pain.
He was about to tell the driver to pull over and explain that the pain had suddenly disappeared when something caught his attention through the rear window.
A car.
It looked almost identical to Vincent’s.
His heart stopped for a beat.
’Are you fucking kidding me?’
He stared at it, trying to convince himself that it was simply another car of the same model. There was no reason for every similar vehicle to belong to Vincent or his men.
But when he looked more closely, his stomach twisted.
Two men dressed in black occupied the car, one behind the wheel, the other in the passenger seat.
Bryce’s breathing faltered.
Their voices carried through the air, reaching him from inside the vehicle.
"We can’t just dismiss it. Remember what Sinclair Junior said. Bryce can be tricky sometimes. He’s smart enough to make something like this up to fool us, and he might have recognized you. Until we confirm at the hospital that this person is actually pregnant, we’re not dismissing it. That name can’t be a coincidence."
Bryce couldn’t breathe for a moment.
He didn’t even know which part of what he had heard was responsible for the reaction.
Was it the fact that they intended to visit the doctor he was going to see and verify whether he was actually pregnant before finally leaving him alone?
Or was it the realization that these were Vincent’s men, yet they were speaking of Sinclair Junior giving them instructions?
Why were they talking about Dave?
Who had actually sent them?
Vincent?
Dave?
Both of them?
The possibility made no sense.
Those two could barely tolerate being in the same room together. Whenever Bryce had been around them, the hatred between them had been impossible to miss; it had practically radiated from every exchange, every glance, every word.
There was no way they could suddenly be working together.
Could Dave have taken Vincent’s men from him somehow?
Bryce’s mind raced through the possibilities, each one more infuriating than the last. Those two were driving him insane, and he was reaching the point where he wanted to go back, confront them both, and put an end to their pursuit himself.
But he had no intention of giving them the satisfaction of knowing where he was or whether he was safe.
He was certain that was the part troubling both Vincent and Dave the most, and unless they learned how to treat him properly- unless they stopped treating him like something they had misplaced, he would make them suffer through the uncertainty of not knowing where he was.
And if he ever saw Vincent or Dave again, it would happen because he had chosen to return to them himself.
Not because either of them had hunted him down and found him.
"Are you okay now, miss?" The man’s voice startled Bryce, reminding him that he had completely forgotten about feigning the pain.
He had intended to stop, but with those men still following them, he had no choice but to keep up the act until they reached the hospital.
They wanted to find out whether he was pregnant before leaving him alone?
Fine.
He would go through with the test. If a simple pregnancy test detected it, then whatever tests they performed at the hospital should reveal it just as easily. He could endure that without exposing the fact that he was a man.
He clutched his stomach again. "Enduring..." he answered, feigning difficulty as the man immediately picked up his pace.
"There’s a good hospital right ahead of us, so hold on for a few more minutes, maybe ten or so," the man assured him.
He was being remarkably kind, almost to the point that Bryce found it difficult to believe. He was a complete stranger, after all, and not many people would go out of their way to help someone they had never met.
Bryce was still trying to make sense of the stranger’s unexpected kindness when a sharp pain suddenly tore through him.
This time, his wince was genuine. Instead of clutching his stomach, however, he grabbed his chest, because that was where the pain had come from, only for it to disappear almost as quickly as it had struck.
’What was that?’ he breathed, his chest rising and falling heavily as the heat and restless sensation beneath his skin intensified slightly, stronger than it had been earlier.
