Bryce was on all fours, his body moving with an ease that still felt foreign and strangely exhilarating.

BJJ had convinced him not to use a vehicle, insisting that there was no reason to waste time with it through the night when they could simply run freely.

Bryce had initially refused. He wasn’t about to run all the way from Alverton to Genovia on his own feet, but when he learned that he could fully transform into his wolf form, he reconsidered.

This night had already taught him more than he could have imagined learning in a lifetime, and Bryce desperately wanted to reach the point where there was nothing else left to surprise him.

If he could understand everything that had happened tonight, then all that would remain would be processing it, deciding what to do with everything he now knew, and preparing himself for what was coming.

For that reason, he saw no reason to deny himself the experience of being a complete wolf, even though a lingering hesitation remained after remembering the agony of his wolf’s awakening.

BJJ had answered the concern before Bryce even had to ask.

There won’t be pain anymore when we transform. The pain only came from the awakening.

That had been enough to convince him.

Bryce transformed smoothly, his body shifting into the powerful form of his wolf, and he secured the bag in his mouth.

He ran.

The dark landscape blurred around him as he moved through the quieter roads before veering into the woods.

He passed through the trees and into the clearing again, his paws striking the ground with increasing confidence as he followed paths he had never consciously memorized.

It was almost as though his wolf body already knew where it was going before his human mind could comprehend the direction.

The cool air rushed through his fur, soothing his skin with every movement. His speed exhilarated him, but there was something else beneath it, something deeper than excitement.

A peculiar satisfaction came from moving like this, from feeling the strength of another part of himself working in perfect harmony with his body.

For the first time after so long, Bryce felt genuinely at peace and calm.

By the time he reached Genovia, it was four in the morning.

Bryce didn’t go straight to Vincent’s house. Instead, he allowed himself to keep running, moving through the woods surrounding the property and making several rounds simply because he could.

He was almost halfway toward five-thirty when the sound of gunshots tore through the stillness.

Bryce stopped instantly.

Alarm surged through him, replacing the calm that had filled his body only moments earlier. He turned toward the sound and broke into a run, moving through the trees with renewed urgency.

The moment he reached the clearing overlooking Vincent’s house, his sharp eyes caught the movement below.

A group of people had entered the house, and they were firing guns.

Another figure was fighting them.

The person moved with nonhuman strength, throwing punches and sending bodies crashing aside.

Bryce’s attention shifted when he noticed two men dragging someone out of the house. When he looked more closely, he realized it was Dave, with each of his twin brothers gripping one of his arms and pulling him toward the car.

His heart lurched.

A sudden surge of anger ripped through him, but before he could react, Vincent emerged from the house holding another man.

He threw him violently to the ground before charging toward Dave and the twins, who were already getting into the car parked near the entrance.

Vincent reached them instantly.

He seized two of the men simultaneously, one in each hand, his fingers locked around their necks with terrifying ease.

Bryce watched claws emerge from his hands as though Vincent were seconds away from driving them through the men’s throats.

He knew immediately what Vincent was about to do.

He was going to kill them.

He couldn’t let that happen.

If Vincent killed them, what would happen afterward? What if he could no longer return to ordinary human life because of it? What if the police began hunting him?

Or any other consequences that might come with it?

The thought barely registered before instinct took over.

"Let them go!"

The command left his mind rather than his mouth. He was still in his wolf form, and no human voice could come from him.

Even so, Vincent suddenly hesitated.

His head turned as though he had heard something, his gaze sweeping across the clearing and into the darkness.

His grip loosened.

The two men dropped hard onto the ground, immediately scrambling to their feet before rushing toward the waiting car. They threw themselves inside and sped away, while the others followed after them on foot.

Dave remained on the ground.

He stared at Vincent with an expression Bryce could barely understand, as though he was still trying to comprehend what he had just witnessed.

Perhaps it was Vincent’s strength.

Vincent, however, seemed uninterested in the escaping men now. His gaze remained fixed on the surrounding woods as he slowly began walking toward the trees.

"Where are you going?" Dave asked.

His voice sounded frightened.

Bryce had never heard Dave sound like that before.

The realization unsettled him. Was Dave becoming this weak and dependent on Vincent now? And why had Vincent been so fierce toward those men simply because they had tried to take Dave away?

The Vincent Bryce knew wouldn’t have cared.

But this Vincent was protected Dave.

He had even brought him into his house.

What was going on?

It had only been one night, barely even that, and somehow Vincent and Dave were already acting as though they had become close. Friends, perhaps.

Or something more?

Even if Vincent was only helping Dave, how had everything changed so quickly?

Vincent didn’t answer Dave. He continued toward the woods, heading directly toward the place where Bryce stood concealed among the trees.

"Vincent, where are you going?" Dave called again.

"Go back inside. I’m coming," Vincent answered without looking behind him.

Dave didn’t move.

"My leg... I can’t move," he said, the pain in his voice sounding genuine.

Vincent said nothing. He simply continued walking.

Bryce finally forced himself to move, retreating deeper into the woods as quietly as possible. He had no idea whether he should run, stay and allow Vincent to find him, or simply walk toward the house.

He took several steps before something suddenly struck him.

The bag.

He had left it exactly where he had been standing.

He looked back.

Even through the darkness, his heightened vision allowed him to see Vincent standing there with the bag in his hand.

His heart skipped.

Vincent would definitely know he was there.

Bryce watched as Vincent examined the clothes and papers inside, then lifted the clothes to his nose and inhaling deeply, his eyes closing as he drew in their scent and held it for a moment.

Then, without warning, his body shifted, his human form transforming into the powerful form of a gray wolf before he sprang forward, deeper into the woods.
