Bryce shifted beneath Vincent and pulled himself free. Vincent immediately moved off him, though his attention remained fixed on him.
Bryce forced himself to disregard the fact that he was standing completely naked in front of both men.
He scoffed inwardly as he tried to rationalize the situation. After all, they had both seen him naked before, so what was there to make such a fuss about?
He turned toward the bag that had fallen to the floor when he jumped through the window, crouched, and unzipped it.
He pulled out his briefs and slipped them on, deliberately acting as though none of this bothered him.
The problem was that the eyes fixed on him made heat creep through his body, and he was acutely conscious that his reaction might become physically apparent if he did not cover himself quickly.
He reached for the sweatpants and pulled them on a little faster, grateful for the layer of fabric between himself and their attention. He followed with the hoodie, tugging it into place until he was finally dressed.
Throughout it all, Dave still stared at him in shock, the disbelief on his face refusing to fade.
"What just happened?" he finally asked. "Did you just change from the wolf into you?"
Bryce’s eyes shifted toward Vincent, the question in his gaze clear- Were they going to tell Dave, or was Vincent going to erase the memory from his mind?
For a moment, Bryce was certain that was exactly what Vincent would do.
After all, Vincent had always been determined to keep their identities hidden from humans. He had made the danger of being discovered clear to Bryce before. Dave was not supposed to know what they were.
Instead, Vincent surprised him.
"There’s something you don’t completely know about us."
What?
Bryce stared at him in complete astonishment.
Was Vincent actually going to tell Dave?
This was the same man who had warned him that if Dave discovered what he was, he would sell him to scientists for experiments.
Vincent had spoken about it with such certainty that Bryce had panicked at the thought, imagining Dave turning him over without hesitation.
He had also told Bryce that he would abandon him if the truth came out.
And now Vincent was simply going to trust Dave with the secret when he could erase the memory instead?
What was really going on?
Bryce’s mind returned to what had just happened- how Dave had been in pain, his injured leg swollen, and he had nevertheless forced himself forward when he thought Vincent was being attacked.
He had not stopped to consider whether the wolf might turn on him. He had simply moved forward.
It was unbelievable.
But then, of course Dave would save Vincent.
Why would he stand there and watch someone who had been protecting him get killed?
"Us?" Dave asked, his bewilderment deepening. "You too?"
Vincent did not answer.
"And..." Dave’s voice faltered, and when he spoke again, it carried a strange mixture of dread and disbelief. "What do you mean there’s something I don’t know about you? That you can shift from wolves to humans? What is that even supposed to mean? Am I watching some fantasy movie, or what did I just see?"
"Yeah, precisely," Vincent said carelessly. "Humans who can shift into wolves. Werewolves. Nothing to dwell on. We’re simply humans with a little more strength and some more abilities."
He made the impossible revelation sound almost mundane, as though being capable of transforming into a wolf was hardly worth discussing.
Dave’s expression suggested that he was trying desperately to force what he had just learned into something his mind could accept, but the effort was clearly failing.
Six years of knowing Bryce suddenly looked different in light of this one revelation.
"I’ve lived with you for six years, Bryce. How have I never found out about this?" Dave demanded. "All those times when you swept me across the room and in the apartment, and I kept asking why you had suddenly become so strong, whether you were working out... Was all of that because of this?"
His voice still carried the same stunned disbelief.
Rather than bringing an answer to Bryce’s mind, Dave’s question dragged him back to the memories of why he had thrown him across the room the first time.
Dave had cheated on him.
He had hurt him badly, and as though that betrayal had not been enough, he had questioned Bryce about where he had been as though he had some right to demand answers.
The second time had been worse.
Dave had told him that he had approached him in the first place because Bryce reminded him of his ex.
All that time, while Bryce had been unaware of the reason behind Dave’s strange obsession, Dave had been manipulating him into doing things, dressing a certain way, and behaving like someone else.
His ex.
It deeply wounded him. And then as if nothing had happened, Dave claimed he loved him genuinely.
After everything that had happened, hearing those words had not erased the manipulation. It had only hurt him again.
The memories came back with such force that anger surged through Bryce’s chest, constricting his breathing.
He decided he was not going to give Dave any explanation about his nature, when he had discovered it, or anything else concerning what he was.
And if Vincent had decided to trust Dave with their secret, Bryce saw no reason to withhold the supernatural circumstances that had brought him back here either.
His gaze lifted to the two men.
"I’m pregnant."
He announced it as simply as though he were stating an ordinary fact, something as unremarkable as greeting the room.
Vincent and Dave simply stared at Bryce.
For several seconds, neither man appeared capable of making sense of what he had just said.
The words had been perfectly clear, yet the silence that followed suggested that their minds were refusing to accept their meaning.
"What?" Vincent asked, his eyes fixed on Bryce- searching his face as though he expected to find some indication that Bryce was joking.
Dave, on the other hand, said nothing. He seemed completely bereft of words, as though there was something he desperately needed to say but could not force the words past his throat.
"I’m pregnant," Bryce repeated.
"I’m pregnant," Bryce repeated, without the slightest concern for softening the revelation or providing an explanation.
Dave brought a hand to his temples and rubbed them slowly.
"Oh God, I think I’m going insane," he muttered.
"Bry..." Vincent began, his voice carrying even greater confusion and shock now that he had heard the words a second time, but Bryce cut him.
"The reason I’m back isn’t because I’m here to reconcile anything," he said, "I’m back because I’m pregnant with your baby, and it needs your pheromones for it to grow smoothly."
The moment Dave heard that Bryce was carrying Vincent’s baby, something brief and dark passed across his face, replacing the shock and confusion that had held him frozen only moments before.
Vincent on the other hand continued staring at Bryce as though the words had reached his ears without fully registering in his mind.
