"Damn it."
Valtteri was deeply troubled. She had come from a poor background herself, and seeing this scene made her conscience ache.
"Besides, I lost hundreds of soldiers and dozens of Divine Guards just to defeat her. Is asking for a little compensation really too much?"
Simon puffed out his belly, looking displeased.
"Don’t forget, we share the same goal. We’re all serving the Empire."
"Just don’t kill them. Otherwise, I’ll hold you responsible."
Sherry hesitated briefly before finally giving in. Without Simon, she might not have been able to obtain information about Night Owl in the first place.
Just as the members of the Hunting Squad began withdrawing, a furious shout suddenly rang out.
"Tier Three Divine Art, Lion King’s Roaring Blast!"
A wind blast compressed to its absolute limit violently tore into the crowd.
The soldiers who had discarded their armor could originally have relied on their shields and armor for protection. Now, however, they could only watch helplessly as the golden gale came roaring toward them.
Everyone was completely caught off guard. None of them had expected the supposedly half-dead Night Owl member to suddenly launch a surprise attack.
"Save me!"
Simon was so frightened that he nearly lost control of himself.
Fortunately, Valtteri immediately stepped in front of Simon and blocked the Roaring Blast for him.
The surrounding soldiers were not nearly as lucky.
"Boom! Boom! Boom!"
Bodies were blasted apart one after another. The Roaring Blast instantly killed more than a hundred elite warriors, while countless others were injured.
If they had still been wearing armor and carrying iron shields, this attack would have killed at most thirty or forty people.
Without them, however, it caused devastating casualties.
The soldiers’ morale collapsed instantly. They scattered and fled in every direction. Some slipped on the blood covering the ground and fell, only to be trampled to death by those fleeing behind them.
"Disgusting vermin."
Florine finally recovered from her shock and charged forward in fury, with the rest of the Hunting Squad following closely behind.
With her divine power fully restored, Brinda had no fear of the exhausted enemies before her.
She summoned the Berserk Lion Phantom while simultaneously dissolving her divine artifact. After taking the combined attack of everyone head-on, she grabbed the dazed Joey and fled at astonishing speed.
"Don’t let her escape!"
Everyone immediately gave chase.
"Wait. Something’s wrong!"
Simon finally managed to recover from his terror.
"She... she shouldn’t have been able to escape. Why is she here? Why?"
Simon’s pupils trembled violently.
An unprecedented terror surged through him, far more frightening than the crisis moments earlier. He did not even dare imagine what had happened.
"Quick! Get to the woods at the edge of the territory! Hurry!"
Simon was practically screaming as he desperately prayed.
"I must have teleported them to the wrong place. I sent Biskaly and Dark Curse somewhere different from Night Owl. Yes, that’s it. It has to be!"
Biskaly and Dark Curse were no ordinary people.
They represented the will of the Empress.
They were practically imperial envoys.
If they died inside his territory, the consequences would be unimaginable.
"Hmm? What exactly happened?"
Florine was utterly confused. She had rarely seen her lord this shaken.
She immediately followed Simon’s orders and abandoned the pursuit, heading toward the forest instead.
As for Valtteri, she was a tank with heavy armor and moved too slowly to catch up. She could only watch helplessly.
The other two members of the Hunting Squad knew they had missed their chance, but they still made a token effort to pursue them.
When Florine arrived at the forest, she sucked in a sharp breath.
Even her usually beautiful face showed rare shock.
"This is bad. I’m probably going to get completely torn apart over this."
Nearly half of the forest had been blown apart. The brutal traces of battle were horrifying to behold.
The two Imperial Guards were almost reduced to nothing but their heads.
Florine did not immediately inspect the bodies. Instead, she looked around.
The pitch-black forest seemed strangely terrifying.
"What exactly did they encounter...?"
It was nearly midnight.
When news of the Imperial Guards’ deaths reached Simon and Sherry, both of them were stunned. Neither dared to speak for quite some time.
"My lords, the Night Owl Divine Chosen was still at full strength and managed to escape."
The members of the Hunting Squad arrived exhausted and panting, bringing the bad news.
Simon was beginning to question his entire existence.
Sherry was equally dumbfounded.
"Why did your underground palace suddenly teleport people somewhere else?"
"Simon, come here."
Florine narrowed her eyes and spoke coldly.
After Simon privately explained what had happened, Florine let out a mocking laugh. She looked as though she wanted nothing more than to slap Simon into the ground.
"Heh. You’re all useless. Idiots. A bunch of ridiculous fools. So many people couldn’t even deal with two weaklings. You’re even more pathetic than Night Owl."
She had only been away for a short while, yet her lord had somehow managed to make such an unbelievably stupid decision.
He had created an opportunity for the Imperial Guards to kill Phield.
It was unbelievably foolish.
And now it had triggered an entire chain of disastrous consequences.
"Why are you being so harsh on me?"
Simon shrank his neck. It was the first time he had ever seen Florine this angry.
"Yes, it’s all her fault. She’s not actually loyal to us. She’s a double agent from Night Owl."
Trying to shift some of the blame, Simon dragged over the Night Owl member who had betrayed them.
"My lord, I don’t want the ten gold coins you promised me anymore. I genuinely wanted to join you!"
Simon roared.
"Bullshit! Torture her! Beat her until she confesses!"
What they least expected was that, when they returned to the city, they saw Phield and his two maids standing beneath the morning sun.
"A ghost!"
Simon jumped in fright.
"What ghost?"
Phield pretended to be offended and immediately began complaining.
"Simon, your damn underground palace somehow teleported me miles away. I ended up in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by wild beasts. You nearly got me killed!"
"You’re still alive?"
Florine was shocked as well.
She had assumed Phield had already been killed by either the Imperial Guards or Night Owl. After all, the underground palace’s special teleportation gate was a divine artifact and had never malfunctioned before.
Only Sherry was unaware of what had really happened. She forced a smile and walked over before punching Phield.
"Finally, some good news. You scared me half to death."
"That’s a little excessive."
Phield grinned.
"I’m a knight, after all. There’s no way some wild beasts could kill me."
"By the way, you did get Night Owl’s heads, right? What a shame I couldn’t witness that glorious moment."
"Uh, why isn’t anyone saying anything? Why are you all just sighing?"
"Come on, someone say something."
Phield almost broke character, but he desperately maintained his act.
After being informed of the situation, Phield reacted with perfectly timed horror.
"Goddess above, what did I just hear? I should punch myself in the ears!"
"I need to prepare troops and supplies for Her Majesty the Empress. Anyway, this has absolutely nothing to do with me. Goodbye, everyone."
"You..."
Simon was frustrated and wanted to stop Phield from leaving so they could investigate further.
But Phield was a noble, and Simon had no authority to restrain him.
"Oh, right. Let’s keep one thing separate from another."
Phield narrowed his eyes and spoke coldly.
"Simon, I nearly ended up in the same state as those Imperial Guards. You can’t just brush this aside."
"You wouldn’t happen to be a member of Night Owl, would you? The Imperial Guards are dead, and I, the Empire’s most loyal knight, nearly died as well. That’s extremely suspicious."
"Come to think of it, this entire thing was your scheme from the beginning, wasn’t it?"
"You bastard! What the hell are you talking about?"
Simon was so furious that he nearly fainted.
