The next morning, the tournament rankings appeared across Hildgard.
1. ASGARD ACADEMY
2. ELEMENTRO ACADEMY
3. MILGARD ACADEMY
4. VALHALLA ACADEMY
5. VOLSTRA ACADEMY
The remaining academies followed beneath them.
Valhalla had dropped to fourth.
Eric stared at the board.
"We were third yesterday."
Damien nodded.
"We lost points during the team event."
Eric crossed his arms.
"Then we’ll get them back."
Noah smiled.
"That’s the idea."
Laura stood beside him, looking toward the arena.
"What’s the next event?"
Before Damien could answer, the enormous projection above Hildgard changed.
EVENT FOUR
POWER TRIAL
The crowd immediately began cheering.
A series of floating platforms appeared above the arena.
At the center stood a gigantic crystal tower.
Damien studied the announcement.
"Looks like an individual performance test."
Noah raised an eyebrow.
"Meaning?"
"Power, precision, control, and endurance."
Eric groaned.
"So basically..."
Damien nodded.
"Show everyone how strong you are."
Eric smiled.
"Finally."
The first contestants entered.
One after another, they were given a target.
Some destroyed it.
Some failed to break it.
Others demonstrated strange abilities that left the crowd cheering.
A student from Freya Academy surrounded herself with glowing weapons.
A Veynholm contestant created enormous stone shields.
A Niflheim student disappeared completely for several seconds.
The tournament continued revealing more of the world.
Noah watched carefully.
Every academy had something different.
Every student had a different reason for being here.
Then the announcer called:
"Jordan Nethem of Asgard Academy!"
The crowd exploded.
Jordan walked onto the central platform.
He adjusted his uniform.
Then looked toward Noah.
That familiar royal smile returned.
"Watch carefully."
Noah folded his arms.
"I’m watching."
Jordan stepped toward the crystal tower.
Lightning gathered around him.
The air began vibrating.
Several lightning spheres appeared.
One.
Two.
Five.
Ten.
The audience gasped.
Jordan raised his hand.
"Nethem Lightning."
All ten spheres fired simultaneously.
BOOOOOOM!
The crystal tower flashed.
A number appeared above it.
92%
The Asgard section erupted.
Jordan turned toward the crowd.
He raised one hand.
"That’s how it’s done."
Eric groaned.
"I hate him again."
Noah laughed.
Then the announcer called:
"Reinham Edga of Elementro Academy!"
Reinham stepped onto the platform.
Jordan’s expression changed.
The two strongest prospects stared at each other.
Reinham clenched his fist.
"I’ll surpass that."
Jordan laughed.
"Try."
Reinham turned toward the tower.
His entire body became surrounded by concentrated energy.
The pressure alone made several spectators step backward.
He punched.
BOOM!
The tower flashed.
94%
Silence.
Then the Elementro crowd erupted.
Reinham raised his fist.
"ELEMENTRO WILL TAKE FIRST!"
Jordan’s smile vanished.
The rivalry had just become personal.
Noah watched both results.
94%.
92%.
He smiled.
"So that’s the level."
Laura looked at him.
"Don’t get reckless."
"I’m not."
She raised an eyebrow.
"You said that before."
Noah laughed.
"Fair."
Eventually...
The announcer called:
"Noah Blackwood of Valhalla Academy!"
The arena became quieter.
Not silent.
But curious.
Noah stepped onto the platform.
Jordan watched.
Reinham watched.
Daniela watched.
Alcris watched.
Laura stood with her hands clasped.
Noah placed his hand against the crystal.
The system appeared.
[Power Trial detected.]
[Ragnarok output recommended: Controlled.]
Noah frowned.
"Controlled?"
He didn’t want another Dead Zone incident.
He breathed slowly.
Orange fire gathered around his arm.
The crystal began glowing.
50%.
60%.
70%.
The pressure increased.
Noah pushed.
80%.
The fire suddenly flickered.
A faint maroon color appeared.
Noah’s heartbeat jumped.
The system flashed.
[Warning.]
[Unknown response detected.]
Noah immediately stopped.
The crystal stabilized.
81%
The crowd reacted with mixed cheers.
Some were impressed.
Others were disappointed.
Jordan laughed.
"Only eighty-one?"
Noah looked toward him.
Jordan smiled.
"Maybe I was right about you."
Noah didn’t answer.
Reinham frowned.
He knew something was wrong.
Daniela knew something was wrong.
And Alcris...
Alcris smiled.
Because he had seen the moment Noah stopped himself.
He hadn’t failed.
He had deliberately held back.
Alcris’s eyes narrowed.
So that’s your limit when you’re hiding it.
His curiosity deepened.
Later that evening...
Noah walked alone through one of Hildgard’s quieter streets.
He wanted to clear his head.
The three moons hung above the city.
Then a voice came from behind him.
"Blackwood."
Noah stopped.
Jordan.
He turned.
Jordan stood beneath the Crimson Moon.
His hands were in his pockets.
"What’s up?"
Jordan looked at him seriously.
"That trial."
Noah waited.
"You held back."
Noah’s expression changed slightly.
Jordan smiled.
"I don’t know what you’re hiding."
He stepped closer.
"But I know you’re hiding something."
Noah said nothing.
Jordan’s smile returned.
"Next time we fight..."
Lightning flickered around his fingers.
"...don’t hold back."
He turned and walked away.
Noah watched him disappear.
For once...
Jordan wasn’t mocking him.
He was challenging him.
Noah looked up at the three moons.
Then at his own hand.
A faint orange flame appeared.
No maroon.
No Dead Zone.
Just fire.
He closed his fist.
"Next time."
Far away...
Behind a stone archway...
A pair of eyes watched him.
Joseph.
Silent.
Waiting.
And unlike Jordan...
Joseph wasn’t interested in proving who was stronger.
He was waiting for the right moment to kill.
The next morning, Hildgard was louder than usual.
The previous day’s Power Trial had changed the atmosphere.
Everyone was talking about Reinham’s 94%.
Jordan’s 92%.
And Noah’s suspicious 81%.
The number had become a topic of debate throughout the academies.
Some thought Noah had simply reached his limit.
Others weren’t convinced.
Noah sat beneath one of the divine trees outside the Valhalla residence.
He held a small piece of bread in one hand.
Eric sat beside him.
"You know everyone thinks you held back."
Noah took a bite.
"I did."
Eric nearly choked.
"You admit it?"
Noah shrugged.
"I didn’t want that thing happening again."
Eric became quiet.
He knew exactly what Noah meant.
"The eye thing?"
Noah nodded.
Eric looked toward the arena.
"Whatever that was..."
He paused.
"You don’t have to figure it out today."
Noah glanced at him.
Eric smiled.
"You’ve got enough problems already."
Noah laughed.
"Thanks."
"Don’t get emotional."
"I’m not."
"Good."
Laura approached them.
"Both of you are terrible at serious conversations."
Eric stood.
"I’ll leave."
Noah looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because Laura has the serious face."
Laura frowned.
"I don’t have a serious face."
Eric pointed at her.
"That face."
He walked away before Laura could respond.
Noah laughed.
Laura sat beside him.
"You really did hold back."
"Yeah."
"Why?"
Noah looked at his hand.
"I don’t trust what happens when I push too far."
Laura didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
"That’s probably wise."
Noah looked at her.
"You knew something like this would happen."
Laura’s eyes lowered.
"I knew your power could become dangerous."
"But not Dead Zone?"
Laura hesitated.
"...Not completely."
Noah studied her.
He wanted to ask more.
But something told him not to.
Not yet.
Across Hildgard...
Daniela stood in an open training courtyard.
Flora watched her.
"You’re distracted."
Daniela looked at her.
"Am I?"
"Yes."
Daniela smiled.
"Maybe."
Flora crossed her arms.
"Still thinking about Noah?"
Daniela didn’t answer.
Flora sighed.
"You really are."
Daniela looked toward the sky.
"His power changed yesterday."
"During the trial?"
"Yes."
"Could it have been a technique?"
Daniela shook her head.
"No."
"Then what?"
Daniela’s expression became thoughtful.
"I don’t know."
Flora frowned.
"That’s bothering you."
"It is."
Daniela closed her eyes.
"I’ve never seen a power behave like that."
Meanwhile, at Asgard...
Jordan was training.
Lightning struck the ground repeatedly.
CRACK!
Again.
CRACK!
Again.
Adrian watched from a distance.
"You’re overdoing it."
Jordan didn’t stop.
"I lost."
"You won your first match."
"I lost to Noah."
Adrian sighed.
"You can’t win every fight."
Jordan finally stopped.
"I should have."
He looked at his hand.
"He isn’t supposed to be stronger than me."
Christina leaned against a wall.
"That’s your problem."
Jordan looked at her.
"You care too much about rankings."
"No."
Christina’s gloomy eyes shifted toward him.
"You care too much about being admired."
Jordan went quiet.
For once, he didn’t have an answer.
Farther away...
Joseph stood alone.
A small black-orange flame danced around his fingers.
He stared at it.
Then closed his hand.
The voice from his memory returned.
"The strongest contestants must be removed."
Joseph’s expression remained blank.
"Jordan?"
"No."
"Reinham?"
"Not yet."
Joseph waited.
Then the voice came.
"Noah Blackwood."
Joseph looked toward the Valhalla residence.
"Understood."
The voice disappeared.
Joseph’s eyes became colder.
That afternoon, the next event was announced.
A massive projection appeared over the city.
EVENT FIVE
THE HUNT
The rules were simple.
Contestants would enter a designated region outside Hildgard.
Each participant would receive a magical marker.
Points could be earned by defeating opponents.
Higher-ranked contestants would carry greater point values.
The highest-scoring contestants would advance.
The crowd loved it.
But the academies immediately understood the danger.
This wasn’t a controlled arena.
This was a hunt.
Noah read the rules.
Damien frowned.
"There’s no fixed battlefield."
Laura nodded.
"Meaning anyone can attack anyone."
Luna looked toward the forest.
"And we won’t always know who’s nearby."
Noah smiled faintly.
"Sounds fun."
Laura stared at him.
"You have a strange definition of fun."
Noah laughed.
"Maybe."
The announcement continued.
"The Hunt begins tomorrow at sunrise."
The crowd erupted.
Noah looked toward the distant forest.
Something about it bothered him.
Not because of the competition.
Because beneath Hildgard...
That strange presence remained.
Waiting.
And tomorrow, dozens of contestants would enter the wilderness.
Including Noah.
Including Joseph.
And perhaps...
whatever had been sleeping beneath the city.
