Gray flesh filled the next threshold where doors should have been. Black iron ribs held a closed mouth organ at the center, while three smaller organs pulsed around it.
The first contained rows of floor pins. Clear eyes covered the second, and white cords ran from the third into pale sacs buried along the frame.
Vaela studied each connection. "The floor pins, clear eyes, and distance cords now share one central organ. We will have to stop all three together."
Jaro looked at the closed mouths pressed across the gray surface. "I preferred the chambers when they tried one terrible idea at a time."
Orrek kept the chain around his waist and his wounded shoulder away from the frame. "The smaller organs join behind the mouth, so keep the survivors behind the pale line while Kael exposes the first connection."
One clear eye turned toward him. The floor-pin organ began ticking.
TICK! TICK!
Kael stepped toward the threshold.
His heel stopped above the stone. The floor remained beneath him, but the gray mouth organ pulled the impact away before his weight could land. Sound vanished from the space around his boot.
The effect reached backward through the formation. Orrek’s hand slid from the wall seam before his palm made contact. Renn opened his mouth, but the first name caught in his damaged throat. Vaela’s blade hovered a finger’s width from a visible nerve, while the bowl shifted away from the boy’s chest without leaving his arms.
The pin organ, clear eyes, and distance sacs pulsed together. One trapped movement before it landed, one changed what people saw, and one widened every attempt to help.
The ash-lipped woman stepped back. A pin rose beneath her injured ankle, and Sova caught her waist.
An eye flashed at Sova. She saw the woman falling the wrong way until Renn followed the blood on the binding to reach them.
"The wound is on your right," he said. "Keep your hand there and ignore the image near the wall."
Sova found the wet cloth and corrected her hold. A white cord widened the distance to safety until Orrek hooked it and pulled it away from her. "I have the line, so keep the woman’s weight on the sound ankle and move when the strain eases."
Vaela pressed her blade against the cord without trying to cross it. "The central mouth is feeding all three. Damaging one part will only make the others carry more of the load."
The Sovereign Root opened under their combined pressure. Kael chose five exact attributes to plant the suspended heel and force his body through the teeth, pins, and false images.
Core Mass Density. Gravity Vector Impact. Velocity Movement Authority. Cellular Acceleration. Metaphysical Resistance.

Kael’s suspended heel fell.
BOOM!
The floor cratered beneath his weight. The gate folded inward, and gray fluid sprayed from a split in the pin organ. Several witness eyes turned too quickly and collided inside their sockets.
Pain drove up Kael’s leg. Gravemarrow Arrival Step had only been seeded; forcing the first use through an unstable pattern tore heat through his heel, knee, and hip.
He did not mistake pain for mastery. The step had landed once because the Root had braced it, not because the technique was complete.
The distance sacs inflated and pulled the gate away from him. Velocity Movement Authority caught the first change, allowing Kael to cross before the cords reached full tension.
He struck the closed mouth organ with his shoulder.
CRACK!
The lips opened around rows of dark teeth. Each tooth closed on a different part of his shoulder, trying to stop the impact after it had already entered the organ.
Kael pushed deeper.
GRIND!
The teeth scraped his ribs. Cellular Acceleration kept the wounded tissue responding to the changing load, while Core Mass Density carried his body farther into the gray mouth.
Vaela crossed the pale line and cut the lower nerve feeding the witness eyes.
SNAP!
Half the clear heads went dark. Renn found his voice and called the first three names. Each answer travelled through the survivors by touch before the remaining eyes could bend their sight.
Orrek moved three injured people across the line with his free arm. The gate pulled at their feet, but Kael’s crater had damaged the pin cylinder. Their boots landed hard enough to bruise, yet every step reached the floor.
Jaro lifted the bowl and followed with the boy beside him. "We are crossing together. Keep one hand on my coat and kick anything that rises under my knees."
A black pin fired from the floor.
The boy struck it with the edge of the bowl.
PING!
The pin spun into the wall before it opened. Jaro checked the child’s hands while they walked. "Keep the bowl close, but do not reach for another pin unless it is already coming at us."
"I will watch the floor," the boy said, keeping one hand on Jaro’s coat.
The distance organ swelled until the chamber stretched between the people who had crossed and those still waiting. Renn’s count cloth pulled toward the gray flesh, threatening to split the linked line.
Kael reached inside the open mouth and seized the central organ. Its teeth entered his palm and closed around the branched mark.
He pulled.
RIP!
Gray tissue tore halfway out of the iron ribs. Fluid covered his arm, and every mouth embedded in the gate opened at once.
SCREECH!
The sound shook loose several witness nails. Vaela drove her blade into the exposed distance sac while Orrek wrapped his chain around the damaged pin cylinder.
"Pull when Kael strikes again," Vaela said. "The three organs have to fail together or the central mouth will keep feeding them."
Renn moved the remaining survivors close enough to touch. "Everyone crosses on Kael’s next impact. Keep hold of the person beside you until both feet land."
The first pair moved too soon. A pin opened beneath the limping man while an eye showed his partner across the line.
The woman reached toward the false image. Sova caught her sleeve as a cord stretched between them.
Renn seized the man’s belt. "Your partner is behind you. Keep the marked foot still until Orrek pulls the cylinder."
The man stopped fighting the ring. His partner found his shoulder by touch while Sova held the sleeve.
Orrek looked toward Kael. "They are ready. Break the mouth when I tear out the pins."
Kael planted it again. The pain reached his hip before his heel struck, but his body kept the movement aligned.
CRACK!
Orrek pulled from his waist. The pin cylinder tore out beneath the gate while Vaela cut through the pale sac.
CRASH!
The witness eyes went blind. The stretched chamber snapped back to its proper length, and the surviving pairs stumbled across the threshold together.
Kael tore the gray mouth organ free and slammed it into the floor.
SPLAT!
The tissue flattened beneath his boot. Small mouths continued opening around the edges, so he ground the remaining teeth into the stone until every movement stopped.
Black pins spilled without opening, clear eyes clouded, and the distance sacs collapsed. Vaela cut every vein still connecting them.
"Nothing is feeding the threshold now," she said. "Keep the wounded away from the gray fluid while I check whether any pins remain active."
Jaro and the boy pushed loose pins into the ruin. Orrek held the damaged cylinder until its red core stopped turning.
Vaela opened the ruined mouth with her blade and exposed the place where its three nerve bundles had joined. "All three organs met here before they moved against us. If we find another junction like this, cut it before the separate parts can share the load."
Renn retied the count cloth and asked each survivor to answer separately while Orrek freed his chain from the broken cylinder. Jaro nearly stepped beside a loose pin, but the boy caught his coat and guided him around it without releasing the bowl.
Kael lifted his foot from the dead organ. Whole-Body Impact Continuity burned along the marks joining his palm, shoulder, chest, knee, heel, and breath. Its status remained arrival-braced and unintegrated.
Gravemarrow Arrival Step flickered beneath the injured heel before going dark. The technique remained seeded and unstable, and Kael refused the urge to force a third use merely because the first two had worked.
Renn counted everyone across the ruined threshold. "All twenty-one made it through. Orrek is bleeding again, and Kael can barely place his heel."
Vaela bound Kael’s foot and tightened Orrek’s shoulder wrap. The treatment restored neither injury, but it kept blood away from the surviving floor pins.
Far from them, Ivara’s cracked fourth link tightened around her wrist. The brace held while fresh blood ran beneath it. She remained chained and smiling.
Beyond the gate lay a field of black dust and floating hooks. Every object drifted away from the nearest body, keeping tools, walls, and people just beyond an easy reach.
Kael sent the survivors across the broken threshold in pairs. They limped and carried one another while Renn checked each answer.
Jaro crossed with the boy and bowl. "We have arrived, although I object to how much it hurt. I am watching the floor this time."
The child kept his eyes on the floating hooks. "Watch above us as well, because the hooks are moving."
Kael crossed last and crushed a remaining tooth.
Black dust slid beneath their boots, opening gaps between each pair.
