Black dust rolled across the passage beyond the broken gate. Hooks floated inside it without chains, and pieces of stone hung above the floor as if something had caught them in midfall.
Kael stopped before the dust reached his boots. Vaela stood beside him, close enough for her sleeve to brush his arm, yet the movement carried her farther away. Her fingers missed him by the width of a hand.
Orrek tried the wall. His shoulder nearly touched the black stone, but his palm could not reach it. Every time he extended his arm, the gap widened.
Jaro stared at his own hand as it seemed to slide away from his face. "I have endured several insulting rooms tonight, but this one has made my own fingers difficult to reach. I object now."
"Your heel is already inside the dust," Vaela said. "Step backward slowly and keep both hands close to your body."
Jaro looked down and moved at once.
The bowl boy hugged the cracked bowl against his chest. One moment it rested beneath his chin. A pale ripple passed through the dust, and the bowl appeared an arm’s length away even though its strap still pressed into his neck.
He reached for it.
HISS!
Cold air slipped between his fingers and the bowl. His shoulder pulled forward, but his hand went nowhere.
"Kael," Renn said, keeping both hands around the count cloth. "The room is moving what we see, but I cannot tell whether it is moving our bodies too."
Kael stepped into the dust before the boy lost his grip. The floor remained beneath him, although each stride stretched longer than the last. Tiny cuts opened along his calves and palms as the room pulled at every place where motion should have ended.
The pale ripple came again.
HISS!
Black dust lifted in a flat sheet. Kael saw two small organs inside the right wall, each shaped like a pair of pale hands held apart around a clear sac. The sac tightened whenever someone reached for another person.
Kael chose Velocity Movement Authority to beat the ripple, Regenerative Dominion to keep his stretched wounds closed, and Threat Perception Instinct to see the field’s breath before it divided another touch.

The next ripple became visible before it reached him. Kael struck it with his forearm.
CRACK!
The flat sheet broke apart. The bowl snapped back against the boy’s chest, and Kael caught his wrist before the sudden change pulled him over.
"Keep one hand through the strap," Kael said. "The room can confuse the distance, but it has not cut the leather."
The boy shoved his arm through and nodded.
Kael hit a second ripple with his shoulder.
BOOM!
Dust burst against the wall. Three floating hooks dropped and shattered, exposing a row of pale organs under the stone. Clear veins joined them through the wall, and each one swelled when the people behind Kael tried to touch.
Vaela pointed with the flat of her blade. "Those sacs pull when our hands move toward one another. Break the sacs, and the gap should collapse."
Orrek swung his chain at the nearest organ. The chain stopped a finger’s width from the pale flesh and strained in the empty space.
"It has the links," he said. "I can feel the pull, but I cannot make the last link land."
Kael crossed behind him and put one palm below the injured shoulder. "Keep the arm low. I will move the rest of you."
Orrek set his feet. Kael drove him forward.
THUD!
Orrek’s fist reached the sac.
CRUNCH!
Pale fluid burst over his knuckles. The space around him snapped back to its proper size, throwing three survivors into his back. He caught one with his sound arm and struck the wall with the other shoulder.
"The shoulder opened again," he said through his teeth. "The sac is flat, and everyone behind me is still standing."
Vaela checked his shoulder without slowing him. "You have another puncture beside the old wound. Keep the chain below your ribs."
Hooks dropped from the ceiling and cut off his answer.
WHIP! WHIP! WHIP!
One hook caught the space between Renn’s fingers and his cloth. Another held Vaela’s blade away from a clear vein. A third dragged the bowl strap tight across the boy’s throat.
Kael seized the hook near Renn. It shifted inside his grip, always almost escaping. He clamped his teeth over its narrow stem.
CRUNCH!
The hook snapped. Renn caught the cloth against his chest and began counting while Kael broke the strap hook with his heel.
"One, two, three," Renn said. His voice shook, but his fingers moved from shoulder to sleeve wherever the dust allowed. "Keep answering. I cannot trust what I see in here."
Vaela cut through the exposed veins.
SLICE! SLICE!
The right side of the passage folded inward by several paces. Jaro grabbed the boy’s wrap and pulled him through the opening. Orrek followed with the ash-lipped woman held against his sound side.
Sova took the rear of the crossing. She pushed one limping worker ahead of her and kept her other hand locked around a young survivor’s belt. "Renn, keep talking. Your count is easier to follow than the floor."
"Seven, eight, nine."
The central organ opened inside the wall. It was larger than the others, with two pale hands around a black eye. The eye tracked Kael while smaller sacs filled along both sides of it.
Kael ran before they could release another ripple. The strange pressure under his skin tightened as his heel left the floor. Whole-Body Impact Continuity helped his wounded body move as one piece, but the effort pulled at his ribs and reopened the cuts along his calf.
He reached the wall and drove his forehead into the eye.
CRACK!
Black fluid covered his face. The pale hands closed around the ruined eye and crushed each other.
CRUSH!
Every false gap vanished at once.
People collided across the passage. Knees hit stone. The bowl struck Jaro in the ribs, and Orrek caught two workers before their heads reached the wall. Renn stayed on one knee and finished the count through coughs and curses.
One young survivor cried out near the left wall. The returning distance had trapped her forearm beneath a hook that had fallen point-first into the floor. Sova knelt beside her and held the wrist still while Vaela worked the hook loose.
"Look at me, not the metal," Vaela said. "Your arm is bruised, and the point missed the bone. I need you to keep your hand open while I pull."
The girl tried, lost the breath halfway, and clenched again. Sova offered two fingers without speaking. The girl held them until Vaela freed the arm.
Jaro dragged a slab under the nearest wall sac so it could not inflate again. "I can hold this down while you free her, but tell me if it starts filling beneath the stone."
He leaned his full weight onto it while Vaela freed the girl’s arm. The sac gave one weak pulse and stayed flat.
"Twenty-one people," he said. "Everyone is here."
Vaela made them remain where they had fallen. She checked the ash-lipped woman’s ribs, bound Orrek’s new puncture, and tightened the cloth around Kael’s side.
"Give your eyes time to agree with your hands," she said. "Stay where you fell until I can touch the person I am looking at."
Jaro rubbed the place where the bowl had struck him and reached toward its cracked side. The boy pulled it closer before Jaro could touch it.
"You threw it in the last room," the boy said. "I know you brought it back, but you should have warned me first."
Jaro let his hand fall. "I should have warned you, and I am sorry. Let me bind the crack after Vaela finishes checking us, because the next throw may break it completely."
The boy studied him before loosening his grip. His tired smile appeared and vanished while Vaela tied a short knot across the pale line on Renn’s cloth.
Renn touched the knot. "Will the hook still pull there?"
"The hook is broken," she said. "The knot tells us which part to inspect if another room tries the same thing."
Jaro tore a strip from his sleeve and tied it around the cracked side of the bowl. He avoided the boy’s eyes while he worked, but his knot was careful enough to keep the clay from rubbing against the child’s chest.
The survivors rebuilt their contact slowly. Renn passed the count through wrists, sleeves, shoulders, the flat of Vaela’s blade, Orrek’s elbow, and Jaro’s reluctant hand. The pattern changed twice so the next room could not learn one simple chain.
Kael crushed the last twitching sac under his heel.
SPLAT!
Pale fluid soaked into the black dust. The wall stopped breathing, and the stones that had been floating dropped around him.
Ahead, long floor plates lifted one after another. Gray muscle flexed beneath their edges. The first plate tipped away when Kael approached, while the same stone remained flat beneath Vaela and Renn.
Orrek watched the plate turn and shifted his chain lower. "It has stopped pulling us apart. It wants your weight somewhere else."
Kael stepped closer. The plate twisted farther, exposing a wet hinge under the stone.
The room had shown them where it moved.
Kael wiped black fluid from his face and walked toward the hinge.
