The first floor plate turned before Kael put his weight on it.

Black stone rose along one edge and exposed gray muscle around a wet hinge. The plate beneath Vaela stayed flat. So did the narrow strip carrying Renn, Jaro, and the bowl boy.

Kael tested the edge with one boot. The plate rolled sharply, cutting through his sole and sending his weight toward a dark gap.

Orrek caught the back of his wrap with the chain. The sudden load jerked his injured shoulder, but he kept Kael from falling between the plates.

"The stone is moving only for you," Orrek said. "It waited until your weight settled before it turned."

Vaela crouched beside the nearest seam. Clear sacs contracted beneath it. "The others are bait. Once he moves away from us, these plates can carry everyone into the left wall."

The floor beneath the survivors began sliding sideways. It moved slowly enough for exhausted people to doubt what they felt.

Jaro glanced at the wall, judged the shrinking distance, and pulled the boy closer. "The floor has developed a preference, and somehow I am not comforted to be on the favored side."

"Move them right," Kael said.

Renn guided the first pair across the sliding stone. Sova took the ash-lipped woman under one arm. Orrek wrapped his chain around a raised rib and used his sound side to pull three people away from the left edge.

Kael drove his injured foot onto the twisting plate.

Kael chose Primordial Marrow Layer to brace his frame, Mind Soul Anchor to keep command of the step, Metaphysical Resistance to fight the floor’s hold, and Core Mass Density to make his weight impossible to reject.

His body did not grow, but the plate sank beneath him. Gray muscle strained around the hinge until clear fluid sprayed from both sides.

CRACK!

The plate tried to drop free. Kael stamped it back into place.

BOOM!

Three neighboring plates slammed flat with it. The survivors’ sideways movement stopped so suddenly that Renn fell to one knee.

He lifted the count cloth before anyone could ask. "I still have everyone. Keep moving them while the plates are level."

Gray muscle burst from the gaps and whipped toward him.

WHIP!

Orrek caught it with both hands. The muscle wrapped around his injured shoulder and dragged him toward the seam.

"Do not pull straight back," Vaela called. "Turn your body and make it carry your sound side."

Orrek twisted. His face went pale, but the wounded shoulder stayed below his ribs. Sova seized the loose muscle and helped him drag it around the stone rib.

Kael crossed the next plate. It softened under his heel. Another became slick. A third lifted at the far edge, and a fourth waited until his knee carried his full weight before snapping sideways.

He drove his other heel through it.

STOMP!

Stone split around his boot. Kael shoved his shoulder into the next rising plate.

CRASH!

The slab broke open. Beneath its black shell lay thick gray ligaments, black hinge-bone, and clear sacs pumping fluid into narrow channels. The floor moved because each slab had been grown around a living joint.

"The large sac controls this row," Vaela said. She held her blade against a pulsing vein but waited for the people above it to cross. "Renn, clear the third plate before I cut."

Renn moved a limping worker and the ash-lipped woman onto the stable strip. "Clear."

Kael tore the sac from its hinge.

RIP!

Vaela severed the vein at the same moment.

SLICE!

The row collapsed. Jaro kicked a smaller hinge before it could rise again and hopped away, clutching his toes. The bowl boy crouched beyond the wet seam and pointed to the muscle still moving beneath the crack.

"It is not broken yet," the boy said. "Use the hinge-bone before it rises again."

Jaro jammed the broken piece into the seam and leaned on it. "Keep the bowl behind you while I hold this down, because my foot has already contributed enough."

The remaining plates lifted together. The floor tilted toward an opening in the left wall, where quiet hooks waited behind a row of clear nails.

Renn saw the opening first. "The wall is taking the injured. Move right, and keep the children between adults."

Orrek shoved two workers toward Sova. Vaela drove her blade into the sliding seam. Jaro hooked both arms around the boy’s waist and sat down, using his own body as an anchor.

Kael dropped both fists into the floor.

BOOM!

The strike traveled through the linked hinges. Stone buckled, muscles tore, and clear sacs burst through the seams. The opening in the left wall snapped shut before any body reached it.

CLACK!

Kael struck the main hinge with his shoulder and all his weight.

CRUSH!

The floor fell flat. Several plates remained tilted, but none could carry the survivors sideways. Beyond the last slab, six pairs of pale figures waited in fitted skin coats, folded hands covering open chests. Red-and-white scales turned inside them whenever one survivor touched another.

Renn used the stillness to count. His voice moved from one exhausted answer to the next until twenty-one people had spoken.

Clear fluid covered the central row, and broken stone had left sharp ridges beneath every step. Renn placed the people with sound boots first so they could brace those limping behind them.

Sova crossed with the ash-lipped woman. The woman slipped after two steps and caught herself on Sova’s forearm.

"I can walk if you stop carrying all of me," she said, breathing hard.

Sova shifted her grip lower instead of releasing her. "Put your weight on the right foot and tell me when the left ankle catches. I am keeping one hand at your waist until we reach the black rib."

The woman adjusted her grip instead of arguing. Together they reached the stable strip.

Jaro tested each ridge with the broken hinge-bone before sending the bowl boy forward. One ridge snapped beneath the tool and exposed a smaller sac.

"Step over this one," he said. "It is still wet, and wet parts of the route have shown very little respect for us."

The boy lifted the bowl over his head and crossed. Jaro followed with one hand near his back, close enough to catch him without changing his balance.

Orrek remained beside the left opening until the last injured worker had passed. His shoulder trembled under the new puncture, and the chain had cut through the wrap around his palm. Vaela saw the blood but waited until his side of the floor was empty.

Vaela caught the chain before Orrek could gather it. "The load climbed above your ribs when the wall caught him, and the new puncture opened before Sova reached you. Hold still while I bind it."

Orrek glanced toward Sova. "She took the pull before my shoulder gave out, and we got his ankle clear. Give me enough movement to keep the chain low."

The worker she had helped released a rough laugh while Sova kept walking. Orrek lowered his eyes to the fresh wrap and let Vaela finish.

Kael stood with blood running from both palms and route muscle hanging from his knuckles. His heel had reopened inside the boot. The greater density had made the floor accept his weight, but his wounds still carried it.

Vaela bound his palm and checked the heel. "The sole has opened again, and another stamp may split the tendon. Use the outer edge while I bind it."

Kael shifted his stance. "Bind it for one more crossing. I will use my shoulder if the floor rises again."

Orrek sat against one warped slab while Sova helped Vaela tighten the wrap beside his old shoulder wound. "Leave enough arm for the chain. Those figures are watching every hand we use to help someone."

The figures remained still while black fluid pooled around their bare feet and their scales followed every helping hand.

Before approaching them, Renn pressed his cloth against a damaged hinge. The muscle flinched away from him.

"It started with Kael," he said. "Now it moves when any of us puts weight near the seam."

Orrek planted his heel on the hinge until it stopped. "Break the small ones before they learn the rest of us."

The survivors followed his example. A man with a torn cheek used a loose rock. The ash-lipped woman struck a clear sac with the heel of her hand. Two younger survivors held a broken plate while Sova cut the muscle beneath it.

Bruised hands stopped the floor’s last movements before it could carry anyone away, but exhaustion kept every face turned toward the waiting figures.

Kael watched the ash-lipped woman crush a hinge before he could reach it. Two younger survivors held another steady for Sova, and he remembered where their hands had landed.

Renn numbered the bent plates on the edge of his cloth. Vaela let him finish because the damaged floor showed which joints had failed and which might move again.

The paired figures remained motionless. Thick black fluid ran from their knees and collected around bare feet. Their chest scales tilted when Orrek helped the ash-lipped woman stand.

Vaela followed the movement. "They react to support. Every time one person holds another, those scales turn red."

Jaro picked up a strip of broken hinge-bone and tested its weight. "The floor has stood up and grown faces. I preferred it under our boots."

Kael rolled his wounded shoulder and stepped off the last broken plate. The nearest pale figure unfolded its hands.

Its fingers aimed for Orrek’s grip on the woman.

Kael moved before the scale finished turning.
