Clear threads pulled the pale marks into the next passage.

Some marks had formed beneath Kael’s footprints. Others came from broken floor plates, crushed rings, and places where his shoulder had struck stone. The brightest marks followed moments when he had reached one of the survivors.

Renn watched a thread tighten between Kael and the old cut around his wrist. "It is sorting the marks by who he reached. Mine is brighter than the ones left on the floor."

Jaro rubbed his bruised ribs while carrying the bowl boy’s pack. "I knew rescue would become inconvenient eventually. I did not expect the walls to keep a diagram."

The passage narrowed around sheets of dried clear fluid. Red lines covered each sheet, and faint pictures moved under them: Kael catching a falling body, breaking a hook near Renn, reaching Orrek before a plate turned, and shoving the cracked bowl back into the boy’s hands.

A tall figure waited among the sheets. Pale skin covered its body like a fitted robe, open along the back to reveal black plates stacked from neck to pelvis. Each plate turned when Kael breathed. Long hands hung beside its legs, with clear needles moving under the fingers.

Vaela studied the images before looking at the figure. "Those back plates are taking the marks from the walls. If it touches him, it may send the old injuries through the people he helped."

The figure bowed. One back plate slid open, and a pale line shot from Kael’s footprint to Renn’s throat.

Renn choked. Both hands flew to his neck while the count cloth hung from one wrist.

Kael stepped forward. Another plate turned, and the line tightened.

He stopped long enough to see the connection. The figure was using his movement as the trigger and a previous rescue as the path.

Kael chose Metaphysical Resistance to refuse the pull, Mind Soul Anchor to keep his protection under his own command, Regenerative Dominion to close what the marks reopened, and Threat Perception Instinct to see each plate before it struck.

====================================================================

The line around Renn’s throat cracked. He dragged in air and kept one hand on the cloth.

Kael ran. The figure turned another plate and sent a line toward Orrek’s injured shoulder.

Vaela cut it before it closed.

SLICE!

Kael’s next step lit a mark beside the bowl. Jaro lifted it clear and pushed it into the boy’s hands. The line struck Jaro’s wrist instead.

HISS!

He hissed but held the bowl steady. "Keep both hands around it. I have already offended enough cookware tonight."

The figure opened every plate along its back. Sheets whipped from the walls and wrapped around Kael’s fist. Each carried a red image from the rooms behind them, but the pictures all led to the same result: a line running from Kael into someone he had protected.

Kael punched through them.

BANG!

His fist tore eight sheets and struck the figure’s chest. White fluid splashed across the black plates. The body folded, recovered, and pressed two fingers against his wrist.

Every pale line in the passage tightened.

Renn screamed as the mark returned to his throat.

GASP!

Orrek wrapped three lines around his forearm and pulled them away from the injured people behind him. The effort dragged his bound shoulder forward.

Vaela cut one line, ducked another, and shouted toward Sova. "Move the marked people behind different bodies. The threads are following old positions."

Sova exchanged places with the ash-lipped woman. Jaro shoved the boy behind a narrow pillar and took the line that had been reaching for the bowl. Two workers crossed their grips, confusing a pair of marks long enough for Renn to breathe.

The figure kept writing through every movement.

Kael seized its back plates.

RIP!

The spine split from neck to waist. Sheets spun through the passage, slicing his palms and catching in the survivors’ clothes. The figure jerked for the first time and fired the needles beneath its fingers toward his face.

Kael drove his forehead into its mask.

CRACK!

The pale face split. Folded sheets filled the space where a mouth should have been. They opened around his jaw, and he tore them out with his teeth.

CRUNCH!

White fluid flooded his mouth. He spat it into the open spine and shoved the body against the wall.

BOOM!

The hanging sheets burst behind it. Red images smeared together, and the threads lost their order. Renn dropped to one knee when the line around his throat loosened.

Threat Perception Instinct drew Kael’s attention away from the ruined spine. One plate had not moved during the fight. It sat behind the figure’s open chest, thick and black, while every visible plate tried to protect it.

Kael drove his fingers through the pale ribs.

SPLIT!

The hidden plate closed on his hand. He planted one foot against the figure’s thigh and tore it free.

RIP!

All twenty-one lines snapped.

SNAP! SNAP! SNAP!

People fell against walls and one another. Orrek caught the ash-lipped woman. Sova held two younger survivors upright. Jaro stayed on his knees until the bowl boy pulled him toward the pillar.

Renn counted from the floor. His voice was raw, but every number reached an answer.

Kael crushed the black plate under his heel.

CRUSH!

The tall body collapsed. White fluid spread across the sheets and washed the red pictures into shapeless stains.

The snapped lines left wounds behind. Renn’s throat carried a red band, Orrek’s forearm had three narrow burns, and Jaro’s wrist had swollen around the place where he took the bowl’s mark. Two workers were bleeding from old cuts that had reopened when the threads tightened.

Vaela chose the throat first. She made Renn swallow a mouthful of water and listened to the breath afterward.

"Speak without forcing it," she said.

Renn touched the cloth against his knee. "Twenty-one people crossed the last room. Twenty-one are still here." His voice scraped, but the words remained clear.

Vaela held up a hand before he forced more sound. "Save your throat and use your hands until the swelling drops. We heard all twenty-one."

Orrek sat beside Jaro while Sova wrapped both of their arms. Jaro watched the strip pass over his wrist and frowned at the pale line beneath it.

"I was nowhere near Kael when he first reached the bowl," he said. "The plate used me because I carried it tonight."

Renn answered by drawing the path in dust: Kael to the boy, the boy to the bowl, the bowl to Jaro. "It followed what we carried after the rescue. The marks can move through people and objects."

Vaela looked at every hand holding food, cloth, chain, or another body. "Keep the same possessions, but change who walks beside whom. We cannot erase the old paths, so we give the next room too many new ones to follow cleanly."

The survivors reorganized without surrendering anything. Sova took Renn’s left side. Orrek moved behind the bowl boy. Jaro carried no object except the loose stone he had used on the servants. The ash-lipped woman placed one hand on Vaela’s shoulder and kept it there while they prepared to move.

Vaela lifted one ruined sheet with the tip of her blade. Three images remained clear enough to understand: Kael reaching a survivor, breaking an organ, and placing himself between a hook and the boy.

"It used the same path for everything he did," Renn said, touching the red mark around his throat. "A strike and a rescue meant nothing different once the plates knew where he had gone."

Orrek followed the red line once, tore the sheet in half, and dropped both pieces into the white fluid beside the corpse.

Several survivors looked toward Kael. Their expressions carried gratitude, fear, and the old habit of wondering what help might cost later.

Kael pressed his bleeding palm against the crushed plate. Red lines tried to climb his skin from the fragments.

HISS!

Metaphysical Resistance stopped them beneath his hand. When he lifted it, every line had smeared beyond recognition.

Renn crouched beside the smeared fragments. "The lines stopped when they reached his palm, and now the pieces cannot rebuild the pictures."

Vaela cleaned Kael’s palm and wrapped it. "Keep the fragments away from the wounded, because the marks may still open against weaker skin."

Jaro placed the cracked bowl on the ruined sheets for one breath. Gray fluid leaked through the crack and stained the remaining pictures before the boy retrieved it with both hands. Two workers watched the images blur, and their tired relief almost became laughter.

The plates and sheets remained with the corpse. Renn kept the memory on his cloth instead, adding four small marks for the places where the threads had tightened. Orrek moved the body aside by one ankle so the injured could pass without stepping through its leaking spine.

The next chamber had no raised threshold. A round opening widened directly from the passage, and a pale humanoid body stood at its center. A dark red eye pulsed inside its open chest, surrounded by folded black steps.

When Kael approached, the eye opened.

Every old mark along his skin began to burn.

Vaela raised her blade. "The last body wrote where you had been. This one is already pressing against where you are."

Kael tested the floor with his injured heel. The chamber accepted the boot, but the pressure beneath it tried to hold the rest of his body outside.

He stepped forward anyway.
