Kael’s foot entered the round chamber. The rest of his body did not.

He could see his knee moving forward and feel the injured heel pressing against solid stone, yet the distance from his hips to the planted foot refused to close. The pressure pulled through his calf until the fresh wrap darkened.

The tall body at the center watched him struggle. Its pale skin carried black lines from throat to ankle, and its open chest held a dark red eye inside a ring of folded steps. Broken nails, hooks, plates, and clear sacs had been built into the chamber walls around it.

Jaro stayed beside the bowl boy and stared at the organ. "I miss enemies who simply run toward us. This one appears convinced we have not entered the room."

Vaela slid her blade across the opening and found an edge where the metal refused to pass. "His foot is inside, but everything above the knee is still being held in the passage. The pressure begins here."

Renn touched the count cloth to Kael’s back, and the fabric went cold across the opening. "The cloth turns cold at his spine. The hold ends there, so Vaela can find it with her blade."

The dark red eye closed once.

The passage behind them vanished.

Stone remained, but the doorway and earlier rooms were gone. The chamber pulled the ash-lipped woman against Orrek’s grip. He caught her with his sound hand and planted the chain beneath his heel.

"I have her," he said. "Move the others before the floor tries another pull."

Sova gathered the youngest around the bowl boy. Renn counted by touch. Vaela felt Kael’s back strain toward the foot inside.

The central body raised one hand. Kael forced his hips forward, and the chamber refused to complete the step.

The pale fist reached him first.

CRACK!

His jaw snapped sideways. Blood ran between his teeth while his own body remained trapped across the opening.

Kael chose the changes his trapped body needed. Core Mass Density would drag him toward the foot already inside. Gravity Vector Impact and Velocity Movement Authority would carry movement and impact across together. Primordial Marrow Layer and Regenerative Dominion had to keep the torn leg usable, while Mind Soul Anchor held the place he had reached.

====================================================================

Kael’s planted foot sank into the stone. Cracks spread beneath the heel as the greater density pulled his knee, hips, and shoulders toward the same position.

Whole-Body Impact Continuity tightened through his wounded frame. The change remained incomplete, but his limbs stopped moving as separate pieces. The room shuddered when he leaned forward again.

Gravemarrow Arrival Step stirred under his heel. Pain ran up the torn calf before he used it. Vaela felt the muscle tighten beneath her hand.

"The same wound is opening," she said. "One step may carry you. A second could take the leg."

"Keep everyone behind the crack."

Kael drove his foot down.

CRACK!

A dark line split the floor from his heel to the red eye. His body crossed the opening, and the sudden movement nearly tore the calf apart.

The pale body lunged to close the crack. Kael met it with his shoulder.

BOOM!

The creature flew across the chamber. Its chest opened wider, exposing black veins beneath the folded steps.

It landed on both feet and closed one fold around the red eye.

Kael inhaled. His breath stopped above his lungs.

The chamber had caught the movement of his chest in the same pressure that had held his step. He clawed at his ribs while the pale body crossed toward him.

Renn saw the locked chest. "His breath is caught. Vaela, show us where the pressure starts."

She dragged the white edge across the opening. A thin black line appeared beneath it and ran toward the organ. "Break the nails along this line. The organ is using them to hold the room together."

Orrek shoved the survivors forward with his sound side. Sova kept their hands linked in changing pairs. Jaro threw the cracked bowl at the nearest clear nail.

CLANG!

The nail shattered. The bowl struck the floor and rolled back toward the boy without breaking.

"My bowl!" the boy cried.

Jaro crawled after it. "It rolled toward you, and I am getting it back. Keep low until I reach it."

The broken nail loosened the pressure around Kael’s ribs. Air reached him in one painful rush.

GASP!

He drove the breath into his next step.

BOOM!

The floor crack widened. The central body struck his ribs, thigh, and throat in quick succession. Each blow landed before his flesh fully crossed the resisting pressure.

Kael stopped trying to match its rhythm. He stepped through the next blow and drove his fist into the open chest.

BANG!

His knee broke the creature’s thigh.

CRACK!

He drove his forehead into its smooth face.

THUD!

His shoulder and weight followed through the same opening.

CRUSH!

The pale body staggered. Its face separated down the middle, revealing folded black strips instead of bone. Kael seized both halves and tore them apart.

RIP!

The organ screamed through the steps around its eye.

SCREECH!

Vaela watched the dark fluid pulse through the exposed veins, found the three carrying the chamber’s pull, and cut them before the organ could shift the load.

SLICE! SLICE! SLICE!

Orrek anchored his chain around a wall rib and held the formation against the pull. The damaged shoulder shook, but Sova took the chain below his hands and shared the load. Renn counted through blood in his throat. Every survivor answered.

Sova changed her grip when Orrek’s shoulder dipped. The chain stopped jerking, and Renn counted each linked hand before the next name.

The chamber could hold Kael’s next step or pull at twenty-one bodies. It could not do both with three veins severed.

Kael saw the red eye blink. He used Gravemarrow Arrival Step a second time.

The injured calf split beneath the wrap.

His heel struck beside the organ.

BOOM!

Black walls bowed outward. Clear nails burst from their sockets, and dead hooks fell around the survivors. The folded steps opened too quickly and ripped at their hinges.

The pale body pressed both hands against Kael’s chest. He caught the red eye with one hand and the exposed spine with the other.

CRUSH!

He folded the body around its own organ. Dark fluid covered his arms, and the eye blinked against his palm.

Kael drove his weight into the blink.

SPLIT!

The organ ruptured. The body broke open from chest to spine, spilling folded black strips across the floor.

The passage behind the survivors returned. Every room they had crossed became visible for one breath before the darkness settled again.

Renn counted from one to twenty-one, touching each person before accepting the answer. The return threw two survivors off balance, so Sova caught one by the waist while Orrek used his chain to stop the other from sliding into the broken organ. The ash-lipped woman stayed upright on her own and helped the bowl boy move away from the falling hooks.

Jaro retrieved the bowl and returned it with both hands. "I threw it without asking because the nail was about to close, but I should have warned you. Check the crack before you trust it with another fight."

The boy examined the repaired side. "The crack did not grow, and the bowl helped us. Ask me before you throw it again."

Jaro nodded and waited until Renn had counted them both by touch.

Far from them, Ivara’s fourth chain link cracked a little wider inside its brace. Blood ran down her wrist, but the link held. She laughed once when the pressure from the broken organ reached her cell.

Kael remained over the corpse while Vaela reached his calf. A second line of heat ran from his heel through the marks in his knee, ribs, shoulder, and palm. Whole-Body Impact Continuity had reached partial integration, not completion. Gravemarrow Arrival Step flickered once and died, leaving the leg unable to bear another use.

Vaela caught Kael’s wrist before he could rise. "Your calf is open, your ribs are bleeding again, and your jaw is swelling. Orrek and Sova already have the front, so sit while I keep the leg attached."

Kael watched the next passage draw away from the chamber before lowering himself. "Tell me when the binding can carry weight. I will not use the step again."

Renn rebuilt the count around the wounded while Vaela worked. A tired laugh passed through the chamber when the bowl boy made Jaro repeat his promise not to throw the bowl without warning, and the sound reached everyone without changing or arriving late.

Vaela tied Kael’s calf, checked the swelling along his jaw, and left the blood on his arms until she knew none came from a hidden cut. Orrek spat onto the broken chest organ while Renn marked the end of the sequence on his cloth.

The black passage ahead withdrew every hook, nail, plate, and visible organ. Nothing attacked when the formation approached.

Kael rose carefully and tested the first floor plate. It locked beneath his weight instead of turning away.

Kael looked into the bare passage. A hairline seam crossed the stone at his next step.
