The passage beyond the ruined chamber was wide, straight, and empty. Kael stepped onto the black floor, but his boot made no sound.

Blood slipped through the wrap around his calf and struck the stone. The drop disappeared before it could spread. A second drop followed, leaving neither a stain nor a ripple.

Renn held the count cloth against Kael’s back. "Twenty-one people are still with us," he said, but the words faded within a pace of his mouth. "I can hear myself, although I do not think anyone near the rear can hear me."

The burned-scalp woman shook her head from six places behind him. She had seen his lips move, but nothing had reached her.

Vaela scraped the back of her blade across the floor. The metal dragged against stone without producing a scrape. "The floor takes sound after it happens, and it swallowed Kael’s blood. Keep touching the person beside you. Hands and sleeves will tell us who is still here."

Orrek lowered his chain around his waist and placed himself beside two limping workers. "I can feel the links moving, even if I cannot hear them. Give me a wall or a seam when you find one, because swinging blind will put the chain through somebody we need."

Jaro moved the bowl boy away from the nearest wall. "Stay where my hand can reach your shoulder. I have survived enough quiet rooms to know they become loud at the worst possible moment."

Kael pressed his heel harder against the floor. His weight entered the stone, yet the surface remained smooth beneath him. The passage was not stopping contact. It was erasing every sign after the contact occurred.

Cold pressure climbed his shin. The floor began to feel untouched beneath a boot that was still standing on it, and uncertainty spread through his ankle until even the planted step felt misplaced.

The Sovereign Root unfolded behind his eyes.

Kael chose Metaphysical Resistance to refuse the empty sensation, Mind Soul Anchor to hold the fact of his position, and Threat Perception Instinct to find the instant when the floor removed each sign.

====================================================================

The passage did not become louder. Kael felt where the silence moved instead. A thin pulse reached the floor after every breath, step, or falling drop, and small channels beneath the stone drew the result away.

He cut his palm with the edge of a broken fingernail. Vaela caught his wrist before he could lower it.

"I need one fresh mark on the floor," Kael said. "The pressure moves after contact. I will use a fresh drop to follow it."

Vaela studied his face, then released him. "Use the palm that is already torn, and do not open the cut any farther than you need. Your body has paid enough for tests tonight."

Kael let one drop fall. It struck the floor and began to vanish, but Threat Perception Instinct caught the pulse moving beneath it. He drove his heel onto the hidden channel.

CRACK!

The sound came from under the floor and reached the formation a breath late. Black stone split beneath Kael’s boot, and thick fluid pushed through the opening. A clear length of living tissue curled inside the crack, covered in tiny cups that opened toward every foot in the passage.

The workers heard the break. Several straightened, and Renn tried the count again.

"One crack beneath Kael," he said. His voice reached farther before fading. "Twenty-one people remain behind it, and all of them are answering."

Kael stamped beside the exposed tissue.

CRACK!

The opening widened. He crouched, forced two fingers under the clear tissue, and pulled before it could slide deeper.

RIP!

A length of clear tissue tore free. Black fluid spilled over his hand, and sound returned in pieces: Orrek’s chain shifting, Vaela’s breath, somebody coughing near the rear, and the bowl boy whispering Jaro’s name.

Renn counted every sound he could place. "I hear twenty-one breaths, although three are too weak for me to trust from here. Touch the people beside you and answer again."

Sova moved through the line, pressing a wrist or sleeve into each waiting hand. The second count came back through voices and touch together.

Kael wrapped the torn tissue around his fist. The rest tightened beneath the floor and tried to pull away, but Core Mass Density kept his stance fixed while Orrek planted a boot on the exposed end.

The dark fluid spread around them. Wherever it crossed the polished floor, old marks appeared beneath the surface: footprints, dragging fingers, bent knees, and one clear impression of a face pressed sideways into the stone.

The burned-scalp woman saw the face and covered her mouth. "Somebody was alive when the floor took that mark. You can see where the cheek moved."

Renn crouched beside her without touching the image. "More people crossed here, and the passage removed every sign they left. We cannot recover their names from this, but we can keep the marks visible long enough to remember they existed."

The clear cups under the floor began closing. Kael pressed his bloody palm beside the face before it vanished.

THUD!

The stone dipped under his weight, and the old impressions sharpened. A child’s hand appeared beside a larger print. Orrek’s jaw tightened when he saw it.

Vaela cut a piece from the exposed tissue and turned it over with her blade. Each cup held a thin membrane that trembled toward nearby sound. "These openings receive vibration, blood, and pressure while the channels carry everything below, so break the cups near our feet and leave the passage less tissue to work with."

Orrek shifted his boot over the clear length. "My shoulder cannot take a full swing, but my leg still works. Keep the wounded behind me while I crush the part under this seam."

He stamped.

CRACK!

The tissue burst under his heel. Pain tightened his injured shoulder even though he had kept the chain low, and Sova moved beside him before his balance failed. Three workers watched him recover and began searching for smaller cups along the wall.

Jaro slapped the stone with his open palm. The passage swallowed the first impact. He moved two steps lower and struck again where a faint circle had appeared under the surface.

THWACK!

A cup opened beneath his hand. Jaro recoiled, rubbing his palm. "I found one, and it feels far too much like an ear. The pale rim is moving toward my voice."

Kael punched through it.

BANG!

Black fluid ran down the wall. Sound rushed through the passage strongly enough for the rear workers to hear Renn’s next count without Sova carrying it by touch.

The survivors joined the work. A man with a torn cheek broke a floor cup with a loose stone, while the ash-lipped woman used her heel against one Vaela exposed near the wall. The bowl boy pointed out a clear circle beside Jaro’s knee, and Jaro moved before it opened beneath him.

Small sounds returned with every broken cup. Cloth rubbed against cloth. Chain dragged over stone. Someone near the rear began crying and no longer had to wonder whether the people ahead could hear it.

A pale figure appeared at the far end of the passage.

Its body was tall and narrow, with black thread sewn through both lips. It held a white rod across its hands, and more thread had been wound around the rod in damp layers. Three matching figures stepped beside it without making a sound.

Vaela looked from their rods to the broken cups. "The thread carries the same fluid as the tissue under us. They may be here to close what we opened, so keep them away from the floor and from anyone whose voice is already weak."

Renn moved behind Orrek and retied the cloth around his wrist. "I can count through touch if they take the sound again, but everyone needs to remember the person on either side. We cannot depend on one voice in this passage."

Kael kept the torn tissue wrapped around his fist. The figures saw the black fluid on his hand, the broken cups, and the marks of older victims still visible beneath his feet.

Their rods lowered together.

The first rod touched the floor. Every listening cup within two paces folded shut, and the old handprints nearest its tip began to fade. When the figure lifted the rod, one damaged cup opened again.

Vaela followed the change. "The rod needs the floor to reach the buried tissue. Keep its tip raised, and it cannot close every cup at once."

The formation did not mistake the pause for mercy. Sova moved the youngest survivors behind the adults, Orrek braced the chain at his waist, and Jaro covered the bowl boy without blocking the child’s view.

Kael stepped toward the sewn mouths. His injured calf held, but the ache from Gravemarrow Arrival Step warned him not to force another impossible crossing.

The nearest figure raised its rod, and the black thread around the white shaft began to tighten.

Renn’s count remained audible behind Kael.

"Twenty-one people," he said, letting every person answer before he continued. "We entered together, and we are still together."

The passage tried to flatten the final words. Kael squeezed the exposed tissue until another cup burst beneath the floor, and Renn’s voice reached the sewn-mouth figures without losing a syllable.
