Silence mark bodies entered through three carved side doors carrying bells with no clappers. Gray robes covered their humanoid forms, and each creature bent beneath a frame of black bone and quiet brass. With every breath, the pages on those frames filled with red marks.

One page marked a breath that had survived, another held the shape of an old wound, and a third showed hands completing a rescue behind black veils.

A page marked all twenty-one survivors. Red script branched across the paper, and the mark multiplied. The bells swung at their waists without sound.

Renn backed into Orrek’s side as the marks multiplied. "Every page shows something we survived in the last chambers, and the bells are using those moments to find us." Vaela watched one red mark tighten whenever a worker inhaled. "The marks cannot erase what happened now, so they are taking breath from anyone who lived through it." Jaro rubbed his bruised chest. "I would prefer surviving without another punishment attached."

The first mark body lifted its silent bell. The worker nearest the rear collapsed to one knee, clutching his chest. Nothing visible struck him. The blank bell had rung somewhere inside his lungs and demanded payment in breath. Kael moved.

The second bell lifted toward Renn. Kael needed Metaphysical Resistance against the mark and Mind Soul Anchor to keep every survivor fixed in his awareness. Threat Perception Instinct could catch a silent swing, while Primordial Marrow Layer and Core Mass Density would give his body the strength to break the bell before it stole another breath.

The red marks reached for Kael’s breath, but Metaphysical Resistance kept them outside his lungs. Mind Soul Anchor held every survivor clear in his awareness, Threat Perception Instinct caught the bell’s silent swing, and Primordial Marrow Layer settled his stance. Core Mass Density gathered behind his fist as the bell turned toward Renn.

The bell stayed silent. Kael’s fist hit it first.

BANG!

The missing clapper appeared for one instant as a red tooth inside the brass, and it shattered under his knuckles. The mark body staggered while red script filled its frame fast enough to tear the pages. Kael grabbed the bell chain and pulled the creature close.

His knee drove into its stomach.

CRUNCH!

The robe folded. The back frame cracked. Blank pages spilled over his shoulders and tried to wrap around his arms. He bit one and tore it in half.

RIP!

The paper flesh bled red numbers. Orrek hauled the collapsed worker upright. "Breathe with me, and keep your eyes open while I hold you." The man tried but could not.

Orrek slapped him hard.

THWACK!

The worker dragged in a ragged breath.

GASP!

Renn heard the breath and raised his voice. "He is alive, and we still have twenty-one." The third mark body turned every page toward him, so Jaro threw the cracked bowl at its back frame.

CLANG!

The bowl bounced off, but the blank bell at its waist rang for the first time.

DONG!

The sound was wrong. Too deep. Too empty. It made every survivor’s knees soften. Kael caught the bowl before it hit the floor. He stared at it for half a second.

Kael hurled the bowl back at the split bell.

CLANG!

The bowl struck the same bell. This time the brass split. A red tooth fell out and skittered across the floor. Jaro stared with open admiration.

"The bowl has broken a bell now," Jaro said. "We should probably stop treating it like cookware."

The boy looked offended and proud at once. Vaela moved through the confusion. She cut the straps holding back frames to mark bodies, not the bodies first. When a frame fell, the humanoid servant underneath shrank, suddenly less official, less certain, more breakable.

"The frame is holding them upright," she called. "Cut the straps before you waste strength on the bodies."

Kael heard. He grabbed the first mark body’s frame with both hands. The servant tried to bow away.

Kael planted one foot against its back and pulled the frame upward.

SNAP!

Black bone anchors tore out of pale flesh. The mark body screamed through its sealed throat while red symbols sprayed from the wounds. The others rang their bells together.

DONG! DONG!

Two workers dropped, Renn’s voice vanished, and Orrek’s shoulder buckled. Vaela’s blade slowed as the mark tightened inside her arm. The same pain reached for Kael’s lungs and failed to close them.

He inhaled. The breath hurt. He used it.

BOOM!

His foot struck the floor, sending a shock through the stone and into the mark bodies’ legs. Their bells swung out of rhythm, and their frames opened to expose red strands running into a pulsing organ behind the far wall. Kael crossed the chamber toward it.

Mark bodies tried to block him, but he drove a shoulder through ribs, a fist through one frame, a heel through a knee, and his grip through a throat. Every broken body rang its bell wrong.

BANG!

CRACK!

CRUSH!

SNAP!

He drove both hands into the red seam and pulled the pulsing mark-heart from the wall.

RIP!

A heart-sized mass came free with silent bells beating inside its flesh. Red marks burned across Kael’s hand, and he crushed it.

SPLAT!

Red numbers exploded across the floor and faded into useless stains. Renn’s voice returned mid-count.

Renn counted through the last name. "All twenty-one are still here," he finished.

The bells stayed broken, but their fallen frames sent red marks crawling into the floor.

Each mark found a drop of blood, a footprint, or a handprint in the cracks between stones. The floor tightened beneath anyone who had left proof of being alive.

Red script circled Kael’s feet. Jaro saw another mark crawling toward the cracked bowl and snatched it away. "Leave the bowl alone. It has survived enough of your rooms."

The boy kicked the number before it touched the rim. It stuck to his boot and climbed. He froze.

Kael crouched and scraped the number off with his thumb. It burned through his skin. He pressed the burning thumb against the crushed mark-heart’s stain.

The mark died there. Vaela pointed at the shattered frames. "The symbols need bone or brass to hold them. Drag the broken frames across the floor and gather every loose mark."

Orrek dragged a shattered frame across the floor like a plow. Red marks clung to it in silent flashes, and the weight pulled his injured shoulder lower with every pass. Renn tracked the remaining symbols before they could spread.

Vaela caught the frame long enough to shift the strain toward Orrek’s stronger side. "Your shoulder is slipping forward, and another hard pull will tear what little has started to mend. Keep your elbow close while I take part of the weight."

Orrek adjusted his grip without releasing the bone. "I can keep moving if the frame stops trying to drag the arm ahead of me. Keep it left of the red stain. I cannot see past this shoulder."

"Six remain on the floor, nine are caught on Orrek’s frame, and three are near the bowl," Renn called. "All twenty-one people are still moving."

Kael ripped another frame from a fallen body and swept the red script into the pulped mark-heart. The floor loosened beneath them with every pass until a silence bell cracked open near Vaela’s boot.

Inside was a red tooth still alive. It rang without moving.

DONG!

The mark on Kael’s thumb flared again, and he slammed the tooth with his fist.

BANG!

The bell shattered, and the mark stayed dead when Impact Witness Sovereignty fixed the broken tooth as something the chamber could not restore.

They broke every bell, crushed each red tooth, and dragged the loose marks into the ruined heart until the floor released their boots. When the last symbol faded, Orrek dropped the frame.

CLANG!

The sound carried through the chamber as the mark bodies collapsed beneath their frames.

Vaela guided the survivors around the remains. "Keep your feet away from the red stains, because one surviving mark could follow us into the next room." Jaro immediately checked his boots.

Renn tied a strip of count cloth around the cracked bowl’s handle while the boy held it steady. Orrek noticed Kael watching the dented metal and red stains. "You are looking at a bowl as if it fought beside us."

"Jaro used it to expose the bell, and the boy kept it from the marks," Kael said. "It did more work than some weapons."

Kael stepped over the final frame without crushing it further. Its broken bells and exposed teeth showed exactly how the creatures had lost. Renn looked back once.

"Twenty-one are leaving this room," he said.

The chamber quieted around people breathing and tightening cloth. Orrek checked the shoulder he could not yet heal, Vaela scraped red marks from her blade, and Jaro wiped the bowl before giving it back. Renn kept counting beneath his breath while Kael listened.

The bells had tried to steal breath and failed. Kael looked across the workers. "Breathe slow. Vaela needs any returning pain named right away."

They obeyed while Vaela checked the two workers who had fallen. The corridor ahead remained quiet, and none of the red marks followed them beyond the doorway.

The nearest broken frame twitched once and sagged flat. Kael returned the bowl to the boy.

"The rim is cracked, but it still holds whatever you put inside," Kael said.

The boy hugged it against his chest. "I will keep it away from the next bell."
