The First Outlier: Primordial Fracture

Chapter 168: Contact Survived Erasure

Black veils filled the narrow chamber from its carved roof to the floor. Each remained transparent until someone reached through it, when the cloth darkened and hid whatever crossed. Beyond them, the survivors appeared in broken pieces while hands, faces, and weapons vanished between each step.

A hand appeared first, followed by a shoulder, Renn’s count cloth, and the cracked bowl.

Orrek’s ruined arm flashed beyond the next veil and disappeared. Kael reached toward the cloth.

Vaela caught his wrist. "The cloth waits until something crosses before it closes. Give me one test, and pull back if anyone else is hurt."

"Watch the people behind me," Kael said. "I need to know where the pain travels."

He pushed through, and his hand vanished from sight although he could still flex every finger. Cold pressure slid around his wrist while the others stared at an empty place where his arm should have been.

The veil tightened around his wrist as though his hand had no right to cross.

A worker behind him choked as a matching line appeared around her throat. The route had found the contact chain and made the wrong person pay. Kael pulled his hand back. The throat line stayed.

His hand returned with black rings burned around the fingers. Core Mass Density could make his grip impossible to ignore, Gravity Vector Impact could carry force through the veil, and Velocity Movement Authority could reach the victim before the pain settled. Regenerative Dominion would keep his own flesh together through the attempt.

====================================================================

Gravemarrow Arrival Step braced beneath his heel. It remained far from mastery, but the seed no longer scattered when he placed his weight upon it.

Whole-Body Impact Continuity moved unevenly with it, grinding through bone, stance, and pain as his heel drove forward and his body tried to keep the impact whole. Kael stepped before the veil could send the harm elsewhere.

CRACK!

The floor cracked before the veil could decide whether he had crossed. His hand shot through the black cloth and closed around the invisible line choking the worker. For one second, no one saw his grip.

Core Mass Density closed his fist around something solid. A black cord appeared in his grip, slick with fluid, and Kael pulled.

RIP!

The cord tore out of the veil and snapped back like a tendon. The worker fell gasping. Renn counted her before she hit the floor.

"She is breathing, and we still have twenty-one," Renn said.

The veils shivered. Silence seal-bodies stepped from between them with their mouths sewn shut and their hands full of hooked needles. These were thinner than the last ones, built for touch instead of rods. Their fingers had no nails, only black thread spools under the skin. The first one moved toward Orrek.

Kael arrived beside it. The movement was too rough to call mastered and fast enough to make every wall veil snap toward him.

His shoulder hit the seal-body before its needle touched Orrek’s arm.

BOOM!

The seal-body smashed through two veils and struck the wall. Its body appeared in pieces as the cloth tried to hide each broken part separately. Kael followed and grabbed its head. He dragged the head back through every veil it had crossed.

Bone cracked in three fast jumps. Each veil forced a new fracture into the skull until the head split open in his hand. Pale white ichor sprayed across black cloth and made the veils visible. Vaela saw the answer.

"Their blood shows through the cloth," Vaela called. "Break them against the veils so we can keep seeing them."

Orrek caught the second seal-body by both wrists when it tried to stitch a worker’s hands together. The needles pierced his palms, but he roared through the pain and slammed the creature face-first into a veil.

THUD!

It vanished to the eyes. Orrek did not let go. He slammed it again.

CRACK!

White ichor splashed across the veil, drawing the whole body in pale outline. Jaro threw a broken witness nail at the outline. It hit the seal-body’s eye.

POP!

"I remain useful at terrible distances," he announced.

A wall veil punished him for being seen. It wrapped around his shoulders and yanked him backward. His body disappeared from the chest up. The cracked bowl fell from his hand and rolled toward the black cloth. The boy ran for it.

Renn grabbed him. Kael moved. Gravemarrow Arrival Step braced and bit his calf open.

He hissed through his teeth but forced the arrival anyway. His fist struck the veil where Jaro’s invisible throat should have been.

BANG!

The veil bulged around the impact. Jaro fell out the other side coughing, very visible and deeply offended. Kael grabbed the bulging cloth with both hands and tore it down from ceiling to floor.

RIP!

The chamber brightened one strip at a time. Rows of watching sockets hid behind the veils, and Kael drove the torn cloth into them.

CRUSH!

Wet pops ran along the wall as Vaela cut the retreating veils from their hanging nerves. Orrek crushed the outlined seal-body, Renn counted each survivor, and Jaro crawled after the bowl while bleeding.

Kael stood in the center of the chamber with black cloth hanging from his arms and white ichor drying across his chest. Red lines still linked the people hurt through his first touch, while torn veils covered the floor. The chamber had one cruelty left.

The remaining power moved into their bodies. One worker reached for another’s sleeve and missed by less than an inch although both could see the gap. Orrek tried to brace them, but his palm passed above the shoulder without landing. The veils no longer hid touch; they kept it from happening.

Renn saw what would happen to the wounded. "We cannot carry anyone if our hands keep missing them, and the line will break before we reach the door." The veils twitched toward his voice.

Kael stomped one flat.

SPLAT!

Black fluid spread beneath his heel. The unstable step wanted to surge again, but Kael held it back because wasting the new bracing on every twitching veil would tear his leg open before the next attack.

Vaela moved from person to person, tapping wrists with the flat of her blade. "Look at the person before you reach, and say where your hand is going. The chamber has less room to confuse a touch you both expect." Jaro reached toward the boy. "I am trying to put my hand on your shoulder, although I appear to be failing."

"Your hand is still above me," the boy said as he craned his neck toward it.

Jaro’s hand hovered a finger above cloth, unable to land. Kael caught Jaro’s wrist and drove it down.

THUD!

The hand landed on the boy’s shoulder hard enough to make both of them grunt. Contact became visible as a red pressure line between them.

Impact Witness Sovereignty flickered inside Kael’s palm while Whole-Body Impact Continuity held the contact through his arm, shoulder, spine, and stance. Gravemarrow Arrival Step braced beneath his heel and carried the force into Jaro’s hand. The chamber shook around the touch it had failed to stop.

Kael grabbed the nearest worker’s hand and slammed it into Orrek’s forearm.

BANG!

The red line stayed. He shoved Renn’s count cloth into three trembling hands.

THUD! THUD! THUD!

Red lines joined the hands. Vaela cut dead veils into strips and bound wrists together wherever touch tried to slide away. When the cloth fought her, she cut it again and smeared its black fluid across the knots so everyone could see where they held.

The work was painful, but it held. The last seal-body crawled from beneath the veils with half its head missing and reached for the red line between Renn and Orrek.

Kael arrived on it. His heel split the floor beside the seal-body’s hand.

CRACK!

His fist split the seal-body before its needles reached them.

CRUSH!

The red contact lines brightened once and settled around the survivors’ joined hands.

The lines faded into bruises around wrists, palms, sleeves, and cloth knots. The survivors checked each other by touch, naming each movement before making it: hand to sleeve, shoulder to shoulder, count cloth to palm, bowl to boy.

Kael flexed his split heel while the braced step urged him toward another arrival. He refused it, and the dead veil strips twitched without rising.

Vaela tied one strip of dead veil around her wrist. Jaro watched her knot it. "You are wearing something that tried to steal your hands."

"I am wearing the piece that failed," she said. "I may need to recognize its touch again."

The strip could serve as warning or bait rather than decoration. The boy tied a smaller piece to his bowl, and nobody tried to remove it.

Kael tested the braced step once after the room quieted. Force gathered beneath his split heel, eager to carry the next touch, but he lifted his foot before the technique could pull him into another use.

Renn watched the strain leave Kael’s leg. "Does refusing it hurt as much as using it?"

"The pain changes, but it never leaves," Kael said. "Power can still pull on the person carrying it."

Renn nodded slowly. "I was afraid the choice had already disappeared."

The dead veils dragged behind a few ankles until Vaela cut them shorter, leaving enough cloth to mark who had crossed the chamber.

By the exit, everyone had touched someone else on purpose through a shove, a wrist grip, a shoulder check, or a cloth knot tightened too hard. Bruises marked where their hands had landed, and the torn veils could no longer separate them.
