The next chamber had hung its victims’ wounds from iron hooks.

A purple bruise swayed beside a broken tooth. Cuts trembled in the air without hands around them, and thin strips of dried screams stirred beneath a vaulted ceiling carved with flowers, hunting beasts, and forgotten kings. The carvings might once have been beautiful, but hundreds of long fingers had been driven through the stone until the old procession looked trapped behind a cage.

An older worker touched his jaw and found smooth skin. Relief reached his face for an instant before he saw the bruise hanging farther down the chamber. It still held the shape of the fist that had struck him, and it pulsed beneath the hook whenever his fingers crossed the empty place on his cheek.

His knees began to shake.

Vaela caught his wrist before he could scratch the skin raw. "The bruise has not healed, because I can still see the swelling and broken vessels inside it. Something pulled the injury out of your body, although your nerves remember where it belongs."

Orrek looked from the man’s clean jaw to the iron above them. His chain remained looped around his waist because the puncture in his forearm was still bleeding. "I have known overseers who called a wound imaginary once the blood dried, but none of them could hang the bruise over a man’s head. Can we put it back without hurting him worse?"

"I need to see how the hook is joined before anyone cuts it," Vaela said. "Keep him standing, and do not let those fingers touch another person."

Renn pressed two fingers against the old blood on his count cloth. "All twenty-one are here, and I remember where they were hurt. The room may make their skin look clean. I will still remember."

The nearest hook turned toward him.

Jaro raised his cracked bowl between Renn and the ceiling. "I was going to complain about carrying this useless thing, but it has become difficult to insult after so many rescues. Stay behind me. The hooks are reaching for visible injuries."

The young boy moved behind his shoulder without being told twice.

Water dripped from the vaulted darkness, and every drop took its color from a hanging wound. Red ran from cuts, gray from dented iron, and black from old wax burns. Kael followed the drops until he found pale creatures crawling among the carved flowers.

Their eyes were round glass lenses set too far apart. Iron hooks opened along their spines like flowers, while clamps covered their fingers and clear scoops flickered beneath their tongues. One creature reached for the worker whose bruise had vanished.

The hanging bruise pulsed, and the man collapsed against Orrek as pain returned to a face that showed no wound.

Kael understood what the chamber was doing. It could make a survivor look untouched while leaving every memory of the blow inside him. Anyone who saw the smooth skin afterward could deny the beating, and the victim would eventually begin to doubt his own pain.

Hooks glided toward Kael’s scars. Several hovered above the cuts left by leech teeth and broken wax, while one opened over the place where Garron’s press had nearly crushed him. They did not stab. They waited for him to surrender what the scars remembered.

Kael raised his hand, and the hooks opened wider.

New weight settled through Kael’s chest, and heat moved beneath every torn edge of his skin. His body did not heal, but the scars held more firmly when the first attendant lunged.

Kael allowed one hook to enter the old wound beneath his ribs. Garron’s altar flashed behind his eyes, along with the slab descending and the first terrible moment when the world became weight. The creature pulled, trying to lift the scar and everything attached to it from his flesh.

Kael closed both hands around the hook. "I survived what made this scar, and you will not take it away from me."

He snapped the iron stem.

CRACK!

The scar dropped as a strip of blackened flesh and struck his chest. Pain burst through him as it sank back into place, but Kael drove through the white flare and slammed his shoulder into the attendant.

BOOM!

Its lens eyes burst, and the impact threw its body through three hanging wounds. A woman’s cut returned across her palm, while the older worker’s bruise struck his jaw hard enough to stagger him.

"Ah! It came back," the woman cried, staring at the blood between her fingers. "Why am I relieved that it hurts?"

Renn stayed close enough for her to hear him over the moving hooks. "You knew the cut was real even when nobody could see it. Vaela will help you bind it, but the room cannot use clean skin to make you doubt yourself anymore."

Vaela moved beneath the swinging wounds and studied how each hook entered the ceiling. Her first cut released only a spray of blood, so she changed the angle before touching another. "The narrow stems tear the wound apart. Look for the thick roots joining them to the wall, because cutting those returns everything together."

Orrek wrapped his chain around the largest root and waded through three hooks to reach it. One pierced his injured shoulder, but he lowered the pull to his waist and used both legs instead of sacrificing the joint Vaela had protected.

"I can move it if someone keeps those creatures away from my back," he said through his teeth. "The root is already separating from the stone."

Kael caught one attendant by the face and drove it into another. Vaela cut a second hook-root, and Orrek tore the largest cluster from the wall.

RIP!

The chamber lurched. Bruises and broken teeth fell from their hooks, while dried screams rushed back into throats as frightened cries. Nobody welcomed the pain, but people reached for one another instead of denying what had returned.

A hook-attendant dropped toward the boy. Jaro shoved the bowl between them, and the hook skidded across its oldest fracture.

CLANG!

"Keep your hands low and pull when it turns toward me," Jaro said. "The bowl can survive one more insult, although I would prefer not to test how many."

The boy seized the hook and dragged it sideways. He could not stop the creature, but he changed its angle enough for Kael’s fist to arrive.

THUD!

Its head struck the floor, and the iron flower along its spine burst through its back.

The heart of the chamber descended from the ceiling. Hundreds of fingers surrounded a soft white body, and wounds taken from its dead servants floated within the flesh. Even the creatures it had made were not allowed to keep the marks of their failure.

Hooks fell around Kael. One caught his shoulder, another entered his thigh, and a third found the scar beneath his sternum where the Sovereign Root had first opened. It pulled at the memory of his refusal.

Kael gripped the central hook with both hands. No clean version of that day existed, and he would not surrender the ugly one merely because the chamber offered relief. He dragged the white heart down and drove his knee upward.

CRUNCH!

The core split. Stolen wounds flew back into workers, walls, and dead attendants. The older man’s bruise struck his jaw hard enough to drop him.

AAH!

Orrek caught him beneath the arms, while Renn counted his breathing and Vaela severed the hook trying to steal the fall itself. Kael followed the broken heart as it crawled upward on iron fingers.

His fist crushed one side.

BANG!

His elbow broke the other.

CRACK!

Kael drove both hands into the split core and tore its roots free.

RIP!

The chamber sagged, and every remaining wound returned to a body or scarred the wall beneath it. Blood and bruises made the room ugly again, which was better than the beautiful lie it had offered.

Vaela crouched beside the woman with the reopened palm. "The hook may return if another chamber has grown from these roots, so keep pressure here and tell me if your fingers become cold. I cannot promise the pain is finished, but I can keep the blood inside you."

The woman swallowed and closed her free hand over Vaela’s binding. "The cut hurts, but I know where it came from. I thought I was losing my mind after it vanished."

One empty hook still twitched above Kael. It lowered without striking and hovered beside the oldest scar on his chest. He felt its offer clearly: less pain, softer memory, and smooth skin where the press had failed to kill him.

Kael crushed it in his fist.

SNAP!

Black fluid ran over his knuckles. "Nobody gives this room a wound, a scar, or a memory. We carry what happened to us, and we leave together."

Renn repeated the instruction in his own quieter words while he checked every face against the count cloth.

Red wax began pouring over the dead attendants before their bodies cooled. It filled split throats, packed broken joints, and pushed pale collars from ruined necks. The wax did not heal anything. It forced the dead limbs into new positions.

SQUELCH!

The worker with the returned bruise gagged as one attendant’s crushed head rose from the floor.

GLOP!

Iron fingers locked around its rebuilt spine.

CLACK!

The red wax lifted the corpse onto its feet.
