The attendants Kael had destroyed began to rise beneath the red wax.

It flowed through the chamber in glossy sheets, filling cracked ribs and shaping broken fingers around black iron. Above the twitching dead, carvings showed crowned hunters carrying fallen companions home. Humans in layered robes walked beside figures with scaled cheeks, while great beasts bore wounded warriors on woven-gold saddles. Faded blue still colored the open sky above them. Red wax climbed the carvings and erased their care.

Vaela stopped at the threshold and caught the nearest worker by his torn sleeve. "Keep your feet away from those channels. The wax is moving toward every broken bone and open wound, and I do not know what it will do if it reaches living blood."

Orrek studied the narrow red streams crossing the floor. His forearm still bled where the previous creature had pierced it. "The thick channels are feeding the corpses, while the smaller ones are searching for whatever Kael broke in the walls. We should cut the source before it finds us."

A dead attendant’s crushed arm lifted. Wax forced its fingers together until the hand became a square stamp, and a pale collar locked around the neck with a hooked tag hanging beneath the jaw.

The corpse struck its own chest.

STAMP!

A red square burned through its ribs. Other corpses rose in answer, their broken faces smoothed by wax while black fluid pumped through their joints.

Renn held the count cloth. "Their chests are moving, but I cannot hear them breathe. Are they alive again?"

Vaela watched one dead hand open and close. "No. The wax is pulling their limbs, and the collars are telling them where to strike. Keep counting the people who still breathe, because these bodies are only being used."

Jaro shifted the cracked bowl into his stronger hand. "I would like my body left alone when I die, preferably after I have eaten something worth remembering. Until we find a better future, stay near the bowl."

The boy watched a wax channel turn toward them. "Will one of those collars take us if the wax touches our skin?"

Kael stepped between him and the nearest corpse. "It will try to close around anyone it can reach. Keep moving with Renn, and do not touch anything red even if it lies still."

The survivors tightened around the count cloth. One corpse lunged, and its stamp-knuckle struck the wall beside Kael.

BANG!

A red square spread across the stone. Wax poured into an old crack, and the wall bent toward the corpse as though an invisible hand had seized it. Kael saw the true danger. Every body he destroyed and every surface he broke could be dragged upright and turned against the group.

Red channels surged toward his feet. Kael planted himself above them.

"You have enough dead flesh already," he said. "You will not have ours."

Weight settled through Kael’s bones, movement sharpened in his legs, and his mind held firm when the collars reached for his will. The first seal-body struck his shoulder.

BANG!

A red square burned across Kael’s skin, and a tiny hook began growing from its center. He caught the creature’s wrist before the stamp lifted.

"My arm still answers to me."

Kael twisted until the wrist broke.

CRACK!

Wax rushed toward the fracture, but he drove the broken hand back into the creature’s chest before it could harden.

THUD!

The stamp fired inward. Red wax flooded the corpse’s torso and trapped its own moving limbs. Vaela passed behind it and cut the thickest channel near the wall.

"This stream is feeding the collars," she called. "Orrek, pull the cut open from your waist, because your shoulder cannot survive another high lift. I will sever the smaller roots while it is stretched."

Orrek wrapped his chain around the open channel. "The wax is burning through my palms, but the chain can take most of the pull. Give me a breath to set my feet."

He lowered his hips, drove both heels into the stone, and hauled the channel apart. Hot wax climbed the chain and tried to close around his fingers, but Vaela cut three roots before it reached his wrists.

Renn counted every open channel and every survivor still standing. Several collars turned toward his voice because the count denied their dead bodies a place among the living.

One seal-body rushed him. The boy raised Jaro’s bowl before Kael could cross the room, and the stamp-knuckle struck its cracked rim.

CLANG!

The impact threw the boy backward. Jaro caught his wrap and pulled him behind his hip. "You moved before I could reach you, which was brave and nearly disastrous. Hold the bowl with me if another one comes, because neither of us can stop that weight alone."

The boy tightened both hands around the rim. "I can keep it straight if you take the impact."

Jaro braced the bowl against his shoulder as a second corpse descended. The boy called the angle before the stamp arrived, and both of them turned the rim together. The blow slid aside instead of crushing them, leaving the creature open to Renn, who snapped the count cloth across its lens eyes. It clawed at the fabric long enough for Orrek’s chain to catch its ankle and drag it into Kael’s path.

Kael reached the seal-body and drove his knee through its middle.

CRUNCH!

The collar snapped, but more corpses rose from the channels. Kael stopped attacking them one by one and followed the red streams beneath the floor. His heel came down where they joined.

BOOM!

The stone split. Wax leaped from the opening while Kael drove both hands into the hot mass below. He found a soft organ layered with tags cut from every corpse it had raised. The organ clenched around his fingers, and false red marks crawled across his skin.

Kael closed his hands around the organ and pulled.

RIP!

The floor bulged. Channels tore free from walls and corpses, and the risen bodies staggered as their collars lost direction. Vaela cut the final root feeding the passage while Orrek tore his chain from the wax, leaving skin behind on both palms.

Renn saw the blood and moved close enough for Orrek to hear him. "Orrek is standing, although both hands are torn. All twenty-one are alive, and Kael has pulled the red heart above the floor."

Kael lifted the organ where every survivor could see it and crushed it between both hands.

CRUSH!

Red wax burst across his arms but could not harden. The splatter remained lifeless, and every corpse collapsed with its wounds still visible.

Grief moved through the workers slowly. The dead attendants were enemies, yet seeing them forced upright had awakened older memories of bodies taken from families before mourning was allowed. The oldest worker knelt beside one ruined creature and closed the one lens that had not burst. Another woman pulled a red collar away from a broken throat and laid it on the floor instead of wearing it as protection. Kael let the silence remain because nobody needed him to explain why the dead should stay dead.

One seal-body with both legs gone dragged itself forward. Jaro kicked the loose collar away before its stamp reached the boy. The corpse collapsed again, but a smaller red tag fluttered beside the oldest worker’s boot.

It carried the shape of a shelter carved into its wax. A hook waited beneath the string.

The worker bent toward it. "The overseers marked useful men so they would not disappear after an accident. I hated the mark, but people without one were left where they fell."

Kael caught his shoulder before his fingers reached the tag. "The shelter is bait, and the hook beneath it is the promise they intend to keep. Step back. You survived without their collar."

The worker stared until he noticed the hidden hook. Anger replaced the frightened hope in his face, and he stepped back.

"I spent years believing any mark was better than being forgotten," he said. "They taught us to fear an unnamed grave more than the hands that put us there."

Kael released his shoulder once the man had found his balance. "Renn remembers your name, and the people beside you know your face. The hook offers less than you already have."

Orrek crushed the tag beneath his wounded heel.

SQUELCH!

Wax snapped around his ankle. He grunted, bent, and ripped it free before the hook could enter his skin. "My hands are already bleeding, so I would prefer not to give Vaela another reason to shout at me."

Vaela inspected the ankle while keeping one crescent ready. "The hook only scraped you. Walk beside me. I need to see whether the wax returns."

The old worker laughed once, surprised by the ordinary irritation in her voice.

HAH!

Two remaining corpses turned toward the sound, but their collars pulled in opposite directions. Their stamp-knuckles struck the empty floor.

SQUELCH!

The workers saw the failure and moved. They were still frightened, although each person stepped over the dead channels without accepting a collar. Renn counted them through the next arch while Jaro and the boy carried the bowl together.

A hinge hidden in the carved wall began to pulse beside the oldest worker’s fading laughter.

CLACK!

The door opened around a black root that looked almost like the Sovereign Root’s mark. Iron fingers tightened around a dark organ beneath it, and the false mark turned toward Kael’s hands as if it had learned how he broke the wax heart.
