Chapter 245: Chapter 218: In Labor
Herding the large lizards was no easy task. Those creatures didn’t like to move around much in the first place. The Feathered Serpent Kingdom had previously placed them around their settlements for security and defense.
But this time, they needed to march south, so Bald Hide had requested some from the High Priest to bring along.
Their method for driving the Petrifying Lizards was to light a special herb in front of them. This Lizard Mint would make the Petrifying Lizards approach on their own accord. As long as someone walked ahead of the lizards, they would keep moving their eight fleshy legs, huffing and puffing as they followed.
That was the theory, at least. After all, the Petrifying Lizards were not particularly tame, nor did they consider the goblins before them to be good companions. It had happened before: a goblin leading the way got too close, the lizard grew impatient with walking, and simply used Petrification Concentration on the goblin in front of it.
So, driving the Petrifying Lizards forward was definitely not an easy or safe job.
After giving the order, Bald Hide gave a casual flick of his head, completely ignoring the grim expressions on the faces of the several Dongtou. ’What’s there to be afraid of? I’m the commander this time. All that matters is killing that audacious mob of goblins. Whether you live or die is none of my business.’
He relished this feeling of being in calm and complete command on the battlefield and believed he was born for this.
"Goblins from the Kingdom, from forty burrows, fighting a bunch of wild goblins who can’t even feed themselves, all huddled together... and we even have the big lizards," Bald Hide said, holding his head high and rolling his shoulders. "The advantage is mine."
"You few," he said, pointing. "Go scout ahead."
Those goblins were all dressed in green outfits covered in large, circular patterns that looked just like scales. But this "leather suit" had no actual scales and was somewhat soft.
They nodded calmly and made no other movement. Suddenly, the snakeskin jackets on their backs began to twitch, as if something was about to push its way out from within. Soon, with a SHWIIING, a pair of red, membranous wings stabbed their way out of the jackets. The goblins stood on the ground and slowly flapped the wings on their backs. After getting used to them, they flapped vigorously a few times, then flew into the air and headed south.
’As expected of the Feathered Serpent God’s mighty power,’ Bald Hide thought as he watched the goblins fly into the distance. ’Anyone who wears its Snake Shedding can fly and dive into water.’
"C’mere, c’mere!" A few shouts came from not far away. Bald Hide glanced over. The Dongtou he had just assigned were luring the Petrifying Lizards forward. The lizards, each like a short, stout mountain of flesh over three meters long, waddled along, huffing and puffing as they swayed their bodies. Meanwhile, the goblins luring them from the front wore terrified expressions, afraid they’d be turned to stone at any second.
Bald Hide ignored the murderous glares from the Dongtou. Instead, he clasped his hands behind his back and strolled forward leisurely. ’This area seems to have traces of goblin life. It must be those guys who were driven out. If we go a little further south, we should be able to find them.’
"Pick up the pace!" he commanded loudly. Just then, he saw a flying goblin from the distance land in front of him.
"We’ve discovered an abandoned village," the goblin reported.
...
"They’ve already found the Centaurs’ previous village?" Shire asked with a frown. Broken Tooth, who stood before him, immediately nodded his head vigorously.
After learning from the Naga Prince that the Feathered Serpent Kingdom was sending a team, he had withdrawn everyone from the Rune Language Material Library. This included Agatha, who had still been fiddling with the Pure White Stone. When she learned that there was a Goblin Kingdom that worshipped an Evil God, and that their goblins could fly, her research interest immediately shifted away from the Ancient Runes.
In Agatha’s words: "They can fly? How promising."
"Now those goblins will probably notice our tracks," Shire said with a slight nod. "Good thing we’ve been running drills specifically for them these past few days."
"Go back to the forest immediately. You must keep a close watch on their movements for the next few days," he instructed Broken Tooth sternly. "Report any activity to me at once."
After watching his subordinate trot away, Shire called up his Domain map and stared intently at the location of the former Centaur Village. He calculated the distance from the Centaur Village to his Fortress. ’This distance... if they’re fast, they could probably get here in half a day.’
’No, that’s not quite right,’ he thought, recalling his mission to rescue the Centaur Race and assessing the situation. ’They have too many people, and they probably still have their old foraging habits. Plus, they have to herd those Petrifying Lizards. Their speed will definitely be slower than my small team was.’
’But they have flying troops. On this flat forest land, if the Centaur Race starts a cooking fire, they’ll be easily spotted.’
’The battle will be in the next few days.’ Shire clenched his fists tightly. The thought of facing the Feathered Serpent Evil God made him a little excited.
’Why hasn’t that guy Pazani come back since he left? Doesn’t he have some coming-of-age trial to complete? If he doesn’t show up soon, and the fight is over, does that mean he can’t become an adult?’
The thought of the Naga Prince, who always had "The safety of the Naga Race is my concern, but no one may disturb my rest" on his lips, made Shire want to grab the four fleshy whiskers by his mouth and tie them in a dead knot. ’It would be best if the battle is over before he gets here. That way, he’ll have to figure out how to complete his trial on his own, and it probably won’t have anything to do with me.’
Shire pursed his lips and prepared to leave the Fortress to check on his subordinates’ training on the surface. But just then, an unexpected figure ran over and blocked his path.
"She’s... she’s..." Bai Mao panted, trying to catch his breath. "...going into labor!"
"Labor? Who’s in labor?" Shire was taken aback for a moment, then his eyebrows shot up. "Are you saying one of the clan’s female goblins is giving birth?"
Several female goblins in the clan had become pregnant, and the offspring were children of the Goblin Leaders he had defeated and killed. But Shire held no grudges about it. ’They’re all future workhorses for the clan anyway. No whelp gets a free pass.’
And now, a female goblin was finally giving birth. "Are you all prepared? Have you boiled water?" Shire asked urgently.
This was the first time he would witness a new addition to the clan. Bai Mao, in front of him, nodded vigorously, then shook his head in confusion and said, "I... I don’t know what to do."
Shire grinned. He knew that Bai Mao was still considered an adolescent among the goblins. Although he’d been appointed to lead the female goblins and manage the clan’s food, he had absolutely no experience with childbirth.
"You should ask the adult female goblins," Shire said with a smile.
Just then, he saw, in the distance, Little John and a chubby, large bird walking toward him.
