Chapter 246: Chapter 219: They All Met
Shire sent Bai Mao off to handle the female goblins’ birthing matters, then took a few steps and turned to Little John, who was walking toward him.
After a closer look, he recognized that the creature hopping along beside his subordinate was a large owl. This owl looked considerably bigger than the ones in the forest—it was at least a few sizes plumper.
"You’re back," Shire said with a smile. "Why’d you bring a ’Round-Faced Fat Chicken’ with you?"
Hearing Shire’s words, the corner of Little John’s mouth twitched. Shan Xi Ao, who was perched on his shoulder, let out a "PFFT" and covered their mouth, nearly bursting out laughing.
Shire’s brow furrowed slightly. He then glanced at the chubby owl, which was standing its ground, its head cocked at nearly a ninety-degree angle. It stared at him with two big, brown eyes, blinking every now and then.
"Er..." He paused for a moment, and realization dawned on him. He then straightened his clothes slightly and said courteously, "Welcome, Miss Druid."
"The ’Round-Faced Fat Chicken’ tilted its head, sizing up the goblin before it. It didn’t speak right away, waiting a few seconds before opening its beak. "If I hadn’t been briefed on the situation beforehand, I’d genuinely think I was under an Illusion."
"Is it that a goblin can actually speak Common Speech?" Shire asked with a smile, his hands behind his back.
"No," Sofia hopped forward a few steps to get closer to the goblin. "That’s just one part of it. What truly astonishes me is... everything here."
"Everything?" Shire raised an eyebrow, waiting for her to continue.
"Yes. On the way here, they’d already told me a great deal," Sofia said, raising a wing to point at the two characters beside her, whose heads were now lowered. She didn’t turn her own head, keeping her wide, round eyes fixed on the goblin. "But I was even more shocked when I saw it all for myself."
"To think that creatures from the very bottom of the forest’s food chain could achieve something like this—develop to such a level of civilization, with food, clothes, and tools..." She lowered her head slightly to look at Shire’s feet. "You even have shoes, and they look quite valuable, at that."
"Oh, it’s nothing," Shire said modestly. "Our people are just very hardworking."
"Hardworking..." Sofia blinked a few times. "This is the first time I’ve ever associated that word with goblins."
"Hard work alone doesn’t seem to explain everything," she said, cocking her head again and staring at the goblin with intrigue. "Hard work can’t create a Teleportation Gate like that."
"Boss, I..." Little John stepped forward to try and explain, but the owl cut him off.
"They’re a bit dim. They actually thought they could lead me in circles through the forest, but I made a beeline for the Drink Undying Alchemy Workshop the moment I got to Yangjiao Town," Sofia said. "Your subordinates’ Intelligence isn’t up to par. They’re no match for you."
Then she opened her beak and let out a series of dry chuckles. "Heh heh... to think I’m saying a human and a little goblin are less intelligent than a goblin. I must be mad."
Shire, equally intrigued, sized up the ’Round-Faced Fat Chicken’ before him. He figured this Druid had to be very intelligent, completely unlike Little John’s description of her being perpetually half-asleep. If she were truly like that, she never would have become a high-ranking member of the Earth and Life Church.
"So, now you’ve seen it with your own eyes." He smiled and spread his hands open in front of Sofia, a natural gesture to show he posed no threat.
At the same time, his mind was racing, trying to figure her out. ’This Druid doesn’t seem to be a threat. If she were, Shan Xi Ao would have warned me by now. So, her coming to me... is it really just about that fallen Druid?’
"Mhm, my eyes have been opened wide ever since I arrived in Yangjiao Town," Sofia nodded, her feathers ruffling slightly with the movement. "A peculiar Teleportation Array, completely different from the cumbersome protocols of modern teleportation; an interesting underground Fortress that looks ancient but is well-maintained; a strange community composed of laboring goblins and flitting little goblins... And while I haven’t seen the Centaurs yet, those skeletons brewing potions certainly made my feathers stand on end."
She chuckled dryly again. "Heh heh... If these two hadn’t just minded their own business and walked right past those skeletons, I probably would’ve started preparing a Magic spell."
"Mr. Elton and the others..." Shire chose his words carefully before continuing. "They’re not what you imagine, a horde of summoned, evil skeletons. They have their own stories."
"Understandable," Sofia said, waving a wing casually. "If I can accept that a group of goblins are no longer so evil, then seeing potion-brewing skeletons and the way Little John and his companion reacted, I was naturally able to accept it quickly."
"However, I came here for a very important matter," the owl said, her laughter ceasing as she stared at the goblin, preparing to ask her question.
Shire nodded upon hearing her words. ’Looks like she’s about to get straight to the point,’ he thought. ’Good. I can handle this quickly and then focus on the upcoming battle with the goblins from the Feathered Serpent Kingdom.’
For a brief moment, a thought crossed his mind. ’If only the Naga Prince were as dedicated as this Druid.’
Unfortunately, it was a case of speak of the devil. Just as Sofia was about to ask her question, the sound of scales scraping against floor tiles echoed from not far behind them, followed by a loud, boisterous voice. "Chief! I’m here! I’m back! The elder told me to come see you!"
The voice immediately drew everyone’s attention. They all turned to look behind them and saw a male Naga lugging a large bag, slithering over in a great hurry.
"You have a Naga here, too?" Sofia exclaimed in amazement. "This is incredible."
"Er..." Pazani heard the Druid’s voice before he’d even reached them, and he froze on the spot for a moment. "That ’Round-Faced Fat Chicken’ can talk."
The corner of Shire’s mouth twitched. He was about to make introductions when he suddenly realized he didn’t quite know what to say.
Just then, Bai Mao came running over. Her eyes were red, and it looked like she had just been crying. "Chief, something’s happened! She might die!"
"She might die?" Shire frowned. He immediately understood she was talking about a problem with the female goblin’s delivery. ’Is it a difficult birth?’ he thought.
"What is it?" Sofia asked, noticing the change in Shire’s expression.
"One of the goblins in the tribe is giving birth, and it might be a difficult labor," Shire said with a frown, unsure of how to handle the situation.
"PHEW..." Sofia let out a soft breath. "Let me take a look."
"You’ve delivered a human baby before?" Shire asked, his eyebrow shooting up.
"No. But I have delivered baby monkeys."
