Chapter 262: Chapter 235: Divine Chosen One
"Divine Chosen One?" Shire frowned. He had never heard the term before. "Is it someone chosen by the gods? What are they supposed to do?"
"That’s the literal meaning, yes, but..." Sofia propped herself up with her arms and sat up in bed. "There’s more to it."
"A Divine Chosen One appears once every five hundred years. They’re usually put forward by the Four Great Churches, but it can be different sometimes." She fixed her eyes on the goblin before her. "I think you might be the Divine Chosen One of my Main God."
"Me? The Divine Chosen One?" Shire arched an eyebrow.
"Yes," Sofia nodded. "Please forgive me for using Mind Peeping on you earlier, but I had my reasons."
"Mind Peeping?" Shire’s smile vanished. He didn’t know the specifics of the magic, but the name alone was telling.
Sofia lowered her head slightly, looking like a child who had done something wrong. "I was only trying to investigate a problem in this area. You see, the blessings of the Four Gods have always been limited to the continent and the major Kingdoms. They’ve never appeared in the Nightmare Forest before."
"But when I arrived, I discovered that this forest was also included within the scope of my Main God’s blessing." She clutched the blanket, her voice growing urgent. "That’s why I’ve been searching for the reason my Main God has taken notice of this place."
"Your Main God, the God of Earth and Life?" Shire frowned. He had a feeling this was a result of him choosing the [Blessings of the Gods] earlier.
’At the time, I only noticed it was a forced blessing. I never thought the people from the Four Great Churches could sense their Main God "marking his territory." Even if the god himself didn’t willingly take that "piss."’
"Yes. So I searched all over, but I couldn’t find a single church or temple. Not even a shrine or a statue." Sofia sighed softly. "All I found were plants and goblins."
The corner of Shire’s mouth twitched. "So you think the Main God blessed... goblins?"
"A specific group of goblins, I should say," Sofia said, recalling the filthy goblins she had seen in their burrows earlier. A look of slight disgust crossed her face. "I originally thought I must be mistaken. How could the Main God bless goblins? Such... such..."
"Such lowly creatures," Shire finished for her. He then saw the maiden on the bed give him an apologetic smile.
"Until I heard about you," Sofia said, her smile fading into a serious expression. "A group of goblins managing to defeat the Vissans... I was truly shocked. After that, I couldn’t find you no matter how hard I looked. It felt like fate was playing a cruel joke on me."
"Then, just as I was about to give up, Little John appeared before me." She paused, reflecting on everything that had happened. "Perhaps it was all my Main God’s plan. From boarding the same boat as him in Torch City, my God was guiding me here."
Shire listened calmly to her story. He was absolutely certain he was not the Divine Chosen One of some God of Earth and Life. "I think this might all be a coincidence. Look, I’m just a goblin. Besides, didn’t you say the Divine Chosen One is supposed to be selected by the Church?"
"That’s the principle, but it’s not always the case," Sofia shook her head. "Sometimes the Church selects the Divine Chosen One and then petitions the Main God for approval through a ritual. Other times, the Main God will choose a believer on their own and send a revelation to inform the Church. Over the past few millennia, the Divine Chosen One has appeared in many different ways."
"Is that so?" Shire mused, rubbing his chin as he looked at the Druid maiden before him. "But I assume those Chosen Ones were all human."
He spread his arms wide, gesturing to himself. "And I’m a goblin."
"That’s what I couldn’t understand at first, either," Sofia agreed with a nod, frowning as she studied Shire. "But perhaps the Main God has his own reasons. We can only obey our God’s will."
"To be honest, I’m really not any kind of Divine Chosen One," Shire said, waving his hand dismissively. "If I were, there’d be some kind of sign, wouldn’t there? Like hearing strange voices, or having weird dreams."
’I really want to tell her I’m not the Chosen One. I just cucked her Main God, that’s all.’
"No, perhaps the Main God bestowed his grace upon you from the very beginning," Sofia said seriously. "A goblin who can speak and write Common Speech, who possesses knowledge beyond that of an ordinary commoner, who can lead an army... and you even have races from the forest, both good and evil, continuously pledging their allegiance to you."
"Maybe..." Shire averted his gaze, sounding a little unsure of himself. "Maybe this goblin was struck by lightning one day and it, uh, accidentally unlocked his intelligence."
’He really had no idea what kind of story to make up to hide his identity as Shire Merlot. This Druid maiden in front of him seemed completely obsessed.’
"No, Green Egg," Sofia said, her face stern. "Do you know what I saw during the Mind Peeping?"
"What did you just say?" Shire’s brow furrowed.
"I said, Mind Peeping," Sofia replied quickly. "I peered into your mind—perhaps even into your very soul. I saw a pair of enormous eyes, eyes filled with such Divinity that a single glance made my heart pound in terror. It was like a million steel needles piercing my brain."
"Not that one," Shire said hastily.
"Right, they weren’t ordinary eyes," Sofia bit her lip. "That was the gaze of the Main God... I’m such a fool. I actually forgot the Church’s teachings: never look directly upon a Divine Being."
"No, no," Shire waved his hands. "What did you just call me?"
"Er, Green Egg?" Sofia blinked, momentarily confused.
"Miss Druid," Shire’s expression turned completely serious. "Please, address me as... Handsome Guy."
"Hand... some...?" Sofia tried to imitate the sound, asking in confusion, "What does that mean?"
"It means," Shire said, slowly tilting his bald head up, "a male of outstanding appearance."
Sofia stared blankly at the goblin before her, completely stunned for several seconds. Her eyes gradually lost focus. But then she lowered her head and said softly, "Green Egg Leader, let’s just continue our discussion about the Divine Chosen One."
"It’s Handsome Guy. Handsome Guy Leader," Shire quickly reminded her.
"Leader, I fainted right after I looked directly into the God’s Eye. And in my dream, I saw your back," Sofia decided to just call him Leader, omitting "Green Egg" entirely. "On your back were wings formed from those divine eyes."
"Divine eyes? Wings?"
"Yes," Sofia clutched the blanket. "Looking back, I’m lucky it was my Main God’s gaze. If it had been any other Divine Being, I might have gone mad."
Shire smacked his lips, feeling uncertain. ’It must be that Black Obelisk... No, wait. If Miss Druid was peeping into my mind, she should have seen the fog and the obelisk. Why did she see divine eyes instead?’
They both fell silent, lost in thought. After a few seconds, Shire was the first to break the silence. "Right, you keep talking about this Divine Chosen One. What do they actually do? Collect a salary from the Church?"
"No," Sofia shook her head. "The Chosen One is meant to lead in a holy war."
