When the dragon emperor was finally satisfied with the heaps of well deserved praise, he waved his tail in dismissal and said, "You may go. And spread the news of the death of Dragon Master and Dragon Strength to everyone."
"Let them know that the days of honor of dragons are not over. Very soon, we too shall step into the Sea of Worlds and recover the glory we lost."
Sloan bowed once more before scurrying away to do what she was asked to do.
But as she was leaving, he called to her, "Wait a minute."
Sloan’s heart skipped a beat when she heard this. She didn’t want to, but instinctively, she froze in place.
Without turning back, she said, "Your Majesty, I have served you with due diligence. I have done everything you..."
She began pleading for mercy even though she knew that her chances of survival were slim and next to nothing. But she thought that since her crimes hadn’t been listed yet, her plea would have a higher chance of moving the dragon emperor if she started begging for mercy early.
Just as she got into the groove of listing out every good thing about her and her services, she heard the dragon emperor say, "Call someone to come and remove these carcasses from my presence. I don’t want half-eaten scraps in front of me. I am not some dog."
"Yes, your majesty. I’ll get someone right away, your majesty," Sloan said as she relaxed.
But just as she was relaxing, the dragon emperor asked her, saying, "What were you saying?"
In response, she shook her head and said, "I was just saying how much I loved being of service to you."
The dragon emperor narrowed his eyes in suspicion at her. He didn’t speak. He just stared at her as if he would eat her at any moment.
When the silence reached the point where the cries of the slaves working away down below, working for their masters, reached them at the summit, the dragon emperor finally spoke.
He said, "You may go."
Sloan ran away as if she had been pardoned, which she had. Her four feet stamped the ground in a hurry as she tried her best to gain speed and put as much distance between her and the dragon emperor.
When she was of sufficiently respectable distance from the dragon emperor, she spread her wings and took off into the air. She ran away without once looking back for fear of being called back.
Watching her leave in fear of her life, the dragon emperor chuckled and said, "What an amusing bunch. Running away with a tail coiled away as if I would eat her."
"Young dragons are so dramatic. Their spines are weak, and they lack courage. At this rate, they won’t amount to anything worthwhile."
He knew why she was running away, and he knew why she was pleading for her life. At any other time, this was an offense worthy of death. But he was in a good mood, so he let her go.
It is not often that he is in a good mood. In fact, ever since the dragon god fell, he has had very few reasons to be in a good mood. His mood had been gloomy, and a faint sense of unease had shrouded his heart.
He wasn’t the only one like this. The entire dragon race is also experiencing this state of gloom.
They’ve been this way ever since the strongest dragon in the Sea of Worlds died. Then all of the news about how dragons are being hunted at first sight in the Sea of Worlds also made things worse.
When he thought about everything the dragon race had lost, he gritted his teeth in anger and said, "Curse those vermin. They are vermin, the lot of them."
"If the dragon god hadn’t died, they would have no reason to exist, much less rise to their current level of power. They would have been enslaved and used for the only thing they are good for, as food."
The dragon god was not only the strongest dragon in the Sea of Worlds when he was alive, but also the strongest being in the Sea of Worlds.
After the ancient cultivators died, no one in the Sea of Worlds could compete with the dragon god. With his overwhelming might, the dragon god won the first struggle for divine crystals.
He can still remember that day when it happened. He didn’t see it, but he heard that a bunch of the rank 9 Dao Initiates found the legendary shiny metal that could be used to become Dao Lords.
He heard that the dragon god won the struggle because the dragon god told everyone and instructed them to celebrate their race’s good fortune. Every dragon that heard the news celebrated it as it meant that they were about to secure another age of prosperity for dragon folks.
At that time, no one thought there was anything wrong with celebrating. But now, the consensus is that they were celebrating too early.
As it turned out, the dragon god failed to advance and died during the process. With the death of the dragon god, the dragon race lost their strongest rank 9 combatant. That was the moment the dragon race began to decline.
The dragon race still possessed more rank 9 dragons, though. They still had 8 more Dragon Initiates in the Blessed Heaven World alone, so the death of one dragon wasn’t the end for them.
The nine dragons formed the leaders of the dragon court of the Blessed Heaven World, and there were many more dragons from other worlds. Plus, they had long lifespans to use for power and a lot of talent, so they didn’t have any reason to worry at the time.
As individuals and as a group, they were superior. Unfortunately, for some reason, no rank 9 dragon managed to become a Dao Lord before the humans and members of other races.
