The Heiress They Lost Came Back Overpowered

Chapter 109 - 108: Kidney Deficiency Incident

The more he thought about it, the more unsettled he became. He’d always been prone to sweating, even as a kid, but it had never been this bad.

At first, he’d chalked it up to joining the program—the intense daily training, his body maturing, his sweat glands becoming more active. Add his Fire Ability to the mix, and it made sense that he’d become sweatier.

But after what the instructor said, he felt more and more that something was wrong. ’Could I really have a kidney deficiency?’

’No way! I’m still young! I haven’t even found a girlfriend or gotten married yet!’

Of course, from the day he joined the program, he had been prepared to die in the line of duty, alone if need be.

He was an orphan, after all, raised by the state. He never felt a pressing need to carry on a family line.

But at the end of the day, he was still a hot-blooded young man. It was only natural to dream of marriage and family.

Nina Jennings was so taken aback by his words that she choked, coughing for a good while before she could recover.

She looked up at him, her expression hard to put into words. "You really have that much faith in what your Number One says?"

Theodore Zane glanced at Yvonne Lowell, his face filled with hero-worship. "Of course! The instructor is my idol! I’ll believe anything she says!"

Yvonne Lowell was so taken aback by his look of pure, almost child-like admiration that she actually started to feel a little guilty.

’I swear, if I wake up in the middle of the night, I’m going to slap myself twice. I’m such a terrible person!’

’Of course, if I don’t wake up, then never mind.’

She discreetly kicked Nina Jennings under the table. Nina Jennings got the message.

Wiping her mouth, she said, "Hold out your hand. I’ll take your pulse."

Theodore Zane readily complied, sitting down beside her and holding out his hand. "If there’s really something wrong, just tell me. I’m tough. I can handle it."

Nina Jennings couldn’t stop the corner of her mouth from twitching. ’It’s not that serious. Even if it were a kidney deficiency, it’s treatable. It’s not a big deal.’

Nina Jennings let go. "Other hand."

Theodore Zane quickly offered his other hand, carefully holding his breath, worried that a racing heart might lead to a misdiagnosis.

Nina Jennings checked the pulse on both his wrists and was left speechless.

’Kidney deficiency, my ass! This kid is as strong as a young bull! After a couple of drinks, she suspected he’d be ready to go wrestle a tiger!’

"Relax, you don’t have a kidney deficiency. Your body’s in great shape, overall. You’ve just accumulated some underlying injuries over the past few years. It’s nothing major, as long as you take care of yourself properly."

Hearing this didn’t reassure Theodore Zane at all; in fact, he looked like he was about to cry. "You don’t have to hide it from me. I can handle the truth."

Nina Jennings gave him a light, exasperated punch. "What, are you unhappy you’re not sick?! You sweat a lot simply because your sweat glands are overactive."

"But the instructor clearly said just now..."

Yvonne Lowell cut him off. "I said it was a high probability, not a universal rule. You’re just lucky you’re not one of them."

"Really?" Theodore Zane looked at them suspiciously. "Then, Instructor Ford, you have to say it: Aurelians don’t lie to Aurelians."

’Tsk. What a waste he and Zachary Jacobs aren’t friends. And why does he only make *me* say it, not Yvonne Lowell?! Ugh!!!’

Still, Nina Jennings went along with it. "Aurelians don’t lie to Aurelians. Really. You do not have a kidney deficiency."

Zachary Jacobs was speechless. ’...So we’re playing favorites now, is that it?! Fine. Just fine.’

Theodore Zane smiled, satisfied. "Thanks for your trouble, Instructor Ford. You all go on and eat. The bell for lunch break is about to ring, so I’ll head back now."

With that, he took off.

The moment Theodore was gone, Zachary Jacobs let out a loud harrumph. In response, the two women didn’t even spare him a glance.

Nina Jennings shot Yvonne Lowell an exasperated glare. "Why did you have to go and mess with him?!"

Yvonne Lowell rubbed her nose awkwardly. "I didn’t realize the kid was so sensitive. My bad, I guess."

...

Theodore Zane returned to the dorm looking relieved. Blake Paxton, from the neighboring bunk, glanced up at him. "So, you got the diagnosis? Is it really a kidney deficiency? Or some kind of incurable disease?"

"Get outta here! Instructor Ford just checked my pulse, and I’m healthy as a horse!" After a beat, Theodore Zane realized something. "Wait a minute, how’d you know I went to see the instructor?"

Blake Paxton scoffed. "I’m not blind."

The three of them had known each other for six years; they knew each other that well.

Besides, unless he was on a mission, the kid wore everything on his face. You practically knew his every move before he made it.

"My man! The only one who truly gets me... is Specs." Theodore Zane clapped him on the shoulder like a brother and flopped onto his bed.

The moment he was horizontal, he started wailing. "OWWW! I didn’t feel it that much when I was standing, but now it feels like my limbs are about to fall off. Help me, I’m just a torso! Somebody come walk on my back!!"

Similar scenes were playing out in every squad’s dorm.

And in an environment like this, there were no luxuries like massage guns. They could only endure the pain and help each other work out the soreness in their muscles.

...

「At two in the afternoon on the training grounds」

Everyone was already standing at attention, waiting for Yvonne Lowell.

But the only one who showed up was the bearded assistant instructor. Where was *their* instructor? Where was their larger-than-life instructor? ’Was she late again?!’

Zachary Jacobs cleared his throat. "All personnel! About-face!"

The crowd obediently turned around.

"At a run, advance!"

After jogging for a while, they finally spotted their Number One Instructor and Instructor Ford. And on the ground... a row of mounted rifles?!

’Their eyes lit up. Were they finally going to get to play with rifles?! And these looked brand new—even newer than their own service weapons.’

Without waiting for an order, they automatically took up positions, one person behind each rifle.

Yvonne Lowell raised an eyebrow. "How proactive of you. Everyone, take off your jackets."

The trainees were a little confused, but after a moment’s hesitation, they complied.

Looking around, all the male trainees were shirtless, while the female trainees wore short-sleeved camo shirts, their arms bare.

Although men and women were different, and they didn’t normally train together.

But nothing indecent was exposed, and at a time like this, no normal person’s mind would wander in a lewd direction anyway.

"Hit the dirt! Mount the rifles in front of you."

Everyone quickly dropped to the ground. It was only then that they noticed the brick tied to the muzzle of each rifle.

’Great. All that excitement for nothing...’

You couldn’t really blame them for their earlier confusion. After all, it wasn’t the right season for any kind of sun-endurance training.

Yvonne Lowell glanced at the sun high in the sky. It felt more like it was just trying to keep them warm than anything else.

In weather that wasn’t hot enough for heat training or cold enough for cold training, she had to get creative.

"Listen up, all of you! You will hold this position for two hours."

"No matter what happens, you will not let go of your rifle, and you will not move! Not even if there’s a knife at your throat."

"Yes!"

Yvonne Lowell glanced at Zachary Jacobs, who was standing behind them.

Zachary Jacobs simply raised his hand, and an arc of lightning lashed out into their midst.
