The Heiress They Lost Came Back Overpowered
Chapter 110 - 109: A Nasty MoveSensing the approaching danger, the team members in the middle row still instinctively rolled to the side.
Even as they moved, they kept their rifles clutched tightly in their arms.
’Good grief, they weren’t even making any wild oaths, yet they almost got struck by lightning for no reason.’
’Don’t mess with us! We aren’t cheaters or scumbags!’
Yvonne Lowell’s expression turned stern, her voice cold as she commanded, "Get back in position and stay down! If you move again, I can’t guarantee that lightning won’t strike you directly."
"What if, at this very moment, all your teammates were captured and you were the only one left? What if you had to maintain this exact position, hidden in the shadows, waiting for a chance to be rescued? What would you do? Use your heads and think about it."
Yvonne Lowell wasn’t telling them not to run even if they were struck, nor would she let Zachary Jacobs actually hit them.
It was just that these people had to possess the most exceptional mental fortitude to remain calm and focused under high-pressure situations.
To put it bluntly, she was just training their nerve.
The method might have been a bit underhanded, but what mattered was that it worked.
Zachary Jacobs casually continued to call down lightning (not really) into the gaps between the trainees. It was obvious they were still scared—that was only human—but at least they weren’t dodging anymore.
Half an hour later, seeing that Zachary Jacobs was showing signs of fatigue, Nina Jennings seamlessly took over.
Trainees: ’Great, just great. First, the Hammer of Thor, and now it’s time to set our asses on fire, is that it?!’
’Why don’t you just tell Simon K. Thorne and Angela to log off so you two can take their place in the game?’
Zachary Jacobs sat down on the lounge chair next to Yvonne Lowell and took a deep breath. "You know, I’m actually starting to miss that big guy, The Mountain Lord. He’s a ready-made, free-of-charge supervisor. If we just put him here, what would you even need me for?"
Yvonne Lowell tossed him a bottle of water. "The Mountain Lord’s food for one day costs more than your food for a week. You call that free? Besides, do you think it’s appropriate to bring it to Aurelia?"
The Mountain Lord was the only one of her "big toys" she’d left on Apeiron, because the Leogryph was on Continent N.
It wasn’t that she was afraid they’d fight. She was mainly worried they’d produce a liger or something. How awkward would that be?
’They’re separated by reproductive isolation, but what if... I’m not willing to take that risk.’
But that stubborn creature had gone and found itself a job on Apeiron—training supervisor.
Whenever the old-timers were training, it would go join in on the fun.
It got familiar with the routines pretty quickly, to the point where it knew to give a reminder when it saw someone’s form wasn’t up to standard.
Auntie Dahlia and the others were happy to spoil it, so they just let it do as it pleased. They really didn’t care about anyone else’s well-being at all.
She was finally starting to understand what it meant to be a doting grandparent. The Mountain Lord was treated better on Apeiron than she was.
It was doted on by everyone, had flexible work hours, a premium benefits package, got paid daily, and even had room and board included.
Zachary Jacobs sheepishly shut his mouth. Bringing The Mountain Lord here really wasn’t appropriate. ’But then again, it wasn’t my money being spent, so how was that not free?’
...
「Back with the trainees.」
The flames in Nina Jennings’s palm would either barely skim past their backs or flash in front of their rifle scopes.
Although they weren’t getting burned, they could still feel the intense heat. It was hard to tell if the sweat soaking their bodies was from the heat or from fear.
The members of the Snow Phoenix team could only pray that their clothes wouldn’t catch fire. As for the men’s team, they didn’t know whether to be thankful they were shirtless or worried their pants would be set ablaze.
After an hour of torment by lightning and fire, they saw Nina Jennings withdraw her power and thought they could finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Yvonne Lowell spoke up. "Do you remember what I said before we started?"
"Rifles in hand, no one moves!" a unified voice shouted from below.
"Very good. The same goes for what’s next. Remember that!"
"Yes, ma’am!"
A silver vortex swirled in Yvonne Lowell’s eyes before fading a moment later.
To the naked eye, nothing seemed to have changed about the trainees.
But they alone knew that the scene before their eyes had transformed.
They now found themselves in a jungle. Their teammates were gone, and they had no memory of their current mission objectives.
They were dressed in combat gear, sniper rifles set up, lying in ambush in the jungle. Not far away was a group of unidentified strangers.
As veterans of jungle warfare, they naturally understood what they should and should not do in this situation.
They watched as all sorts of crawling insects, ants, and even snakes passed by. Some even crawled onto their bodies, giving them a sharp bite from time to time.
What was even more terrifying was when a Brown Bear ambled past not far from them. Although it didn’t come close, the sight was still hair-raising.
But the only thing they could do was hold their breath, make no sound, and wait for the creatures to leave on their own.
They lay motionless from day to night, watching the strangers in the distance through their scopes.
...
Yvonne Lowell watched with a blank expression. She saw their faces change color again and again, some even trembling uncontrollably with pale faces. Yet, not a single one of them moved. A satisfied smile finally touched her lips.
When the time was up, Yvonne Lowell snapped her fingers, and everyone awoke from the Illusion Realm.
Back in the familiar training grounds, catching sight of their familiar teammates in their peripheral vision, they all let out a huge sigh of relief.
Even Instructor No. 1 up on the platform started to look benevolent and kind.
’Wait a minute. So all of that was just an illusion? We lay there for a whole day for nothing? But how was it so realistic?! It felt like we were actually being bitten by bugs. It hurt like hell.’
"Everyone, get up."
Hearing the instructor’s heavenly voice declare the end of the ordeal, everyone scrambled to their feet.
They looked at Yvonne Lowell and the other two instructors, their hearts itching with a curiosity that could kill a cat, but none of them dared to speak up.
Ryan Ford couldn’t hold it in any longer. He called out, "Report!"
"Spit it out."
"Ma’am, what just happened to us? Why did we suddenly appear in a jungle?"
Yvonne Lowell raised an eyebrow. "How should I know? Haven’t you been lying here the whole time without moving?"
Ryan Ford wasn’t convinced. "Are you sure it wasn’t an illusion you three created?"
"It has nothing to do with us. Maybe the mushrooms you ate for lunch weren’t cooked properly," Yvonne Lowell said with an innocent shrug.
’Was she treating them like children? Besides, there weren’t even any mushrooms for lunch today!’
But they didn’t press the issue. After spending the day with her, they fancied they had a pretty good understanding of their instructor’s twisted sense of humor.
If she didn’t want to talk, they could shout until they were hoarse and still not get an answer.
Besides, the nightmare was finally over. It was better not to dwell on it.
Just when they thought they could get some rest, they saw sleds that hadn’t been there before appear out of thin air beside them?!
’Yeah, those are sleds, right? Simple wooden ones, tied together with hemp rope.’
’Why do I suddenly have a bad feeling about this? Don’t tell me...’
Sure enough, the next second, Yvonne Lowell spoke. "You guys have pulled tires around the camp so many times. You must be sick of it by now, right?"
