The Heiress They Lost Came Back Overpowered
Chapter 115 - 114: Entertainment ProjectHere it comes again. That damned, soul-reaping alarm is back.
’Can’t they just change the alarm to a funeral dirge next time? Might as well send us all off at once!’
"Oh, God, save me! Matron of Dreams, grant me a protective shield!"
"The Matron of Dreams won’t do you any good. The instructor is the real big bad here. Even if they’re on opposite sides, one’s the boss and the other’s just a grunt. They’re not even in the same weight class."
"Even if you nailed yourself to your mattress, it wouldn’t matter. The instructor would just make you run with the whole bed on your back."
"We only had a few days of peace! And now this crap again!"
"Forget seeing a doctor when you’re sick. Just look at me. I’m gonna croak long before you can even get an appointment."
"AAAAAAAH!! I just want to go home and get a desk job! A nine-to-five with weekends off... doesn’t that sound nice?!"
Everyone clutched their blankets, instinctively wanting to pull them over their heads.
But their hands, far more afraid of death than their minds, moved on their own. They flung off their blankets, scrambled into their training uniforms, made their beds, and sprinted toward the training grounds.
They were no longer the ordinary elite squad of the past. They were now the Cynical, Hardened, Working-Stiff Elite Squad.
Starting work at a mere four in the morning was nothing special anymore. A walk in the park, really.
That which did not kill them would only make them more resentful.
「The Training Grounds」
Yvonne Lowell gazed down at the forty deeply resentful faces below, her lips twitching in a barely perceptible smile.
"You’ve all been training so hard lately, so I’ve prepared a little recreational activity to help you relax. Now, try not to get too choked up."
"Instructor, what kind of recreational activity?"
Hearing this, the trainees felt neither happy nor touched. Instead, the warning bells in their heads started going off. The kind that went WHOOP, WHOOP, WHOOP.
’What has this wicked woman come up with to mess with us now? Is the torture about to start again...?’
Perhaps the meaning in their eyes was too obvious, because Yvonne Lowell cleared her throat lightly.
"I just noticed you’ve all been cooped up in the camp for so long, and I was worried you were getting bored. So, we’re going to go on a little outdoor excursion. We’ll complete a small mission while we’re at it."
’Got it. It’s a wilderness survival exercise, right? No need to make it sound so fancy.’
’Who in their right mind goes on an "excursion" where you have to eat bugs, drink from streams, and use the ground for a bed and the sky for a blanket?!’
Yvonne Lowell: I do. In my family, we do.
"See that mountain behind our camp? In a moment, you’ll be taken to the other side of it. The finish line is right here at our camp. Along the way, you’ll need to find small flags hidden on the mountain."
"We’ve placed a total of 100 flags on the mountain. This time, you’ll compete as squads in a small competition. The squad that finds the most flags and returns the fastest wins."
"There are no large predators on this mountain, so it’s not particularly dangerous. If you encounter an emergency you can’t handle, just wave at the sky, and I, your beloved instructor, will ride a seven-colored auspicious cloud to your rescue."
The trainees couldn’t help but let the corners of their mouths twitch. ’Is she really coming to rescue us, and not just to send us on our way to the afterlife?’
’Somehow, they felt that if that day ever came, Number 1 would fly right up to them, mock them with a wave of passive-aggressive sarcasm, and then kick them straight into the next life!’
’When there’s no danger, Instructor Number 1 is the biggest danger of all!!!’
"Here’s a little hint for you: you can steal flags from other teams. Before you reach the finish line, no flag has a permanent owner."
"If you have any other questions, now’s the time to ask."
Stanley Sutton spoke up, "Instructor, can our team use our superpowers?"
"Of course you can. I said it was an excursion, didn’t I? How you play is up to you."
All the members of the Anomalous Abilities Unit were overjoyed. This was great! Their team had Wood Element and Earth Element users!
Plus, stealing flags would be easy. They could just have Harvey Lawson teleport over and grab them.
Seeing the resentful looks from the other three squads, Yvonne Lowell said nonchalantly, "You don’t need to feel like it’s unfair. The world has never been fair. Since they have superpowers, of course they can use them. Besides, aren’t there some areas where they can’t compare to you?"
Summer Quinn asked, "Instructor, since four teams are competing, is there a system of rewards and punishments?"
Yvonne Lowell raised an eyebrow. "The last-place squad will have to stay for extra training every night for the rest of the month. As for the first-place prize... I haven’t thought of one yet."
A sharp glint flashed in Theodore Zane’s eyes as he suggested, "Instructor, how about for the first-place prize, you grant them one request?"
"Trying to set a trap for me, are you?" Yvonne Lowell shot him a look, then turned to the others. "It’s not out of the question. What do the rest of you squads think?"
"Our squad agrees!" said Jasper Hayes.
"We agree too!!" the other squads chimed in.
Yvonne Lowell scoffed. "Fine. I can grant the first-place team one request—anything except taking off my mask."
Seeing that Yvonne Lowell hadn’t completely fallen into his trap, Theodore Zane looked a bit dejected. But it was fine—other requests were still good. It was better than nothing!
"Your food and survival supplies have been prepared. If there are no more questions, head out now."
"Yes, ma’am!"
Carrying rucksacks weighing nearly thirty kilograms, the trainees boarded a large bus with sealed windows.
Aside from the front and rear windshields, all the other windows were covered with black tape. ’Were they... really that afraid of us jumping out?!’
Yvonne Lowell: Has it ever occurred to you that it might be to protect the faces of you idiots?!
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
「An hour and a half later, at six in the morning.」
The bus stopped at the foot of the mountain just as the sky was beginning to brighten with the first light of dawn.
Finn Knight, the driver, didn’t say a word. He just opened the bus door.
After everyone had disembarked with their rucksacks, Finn Knight slammed on the accelerator and sped off.
Theodore Zane stroked his chin, standing in place while inhaling the bus’s exhaust fumes. "Our Assistant Knight’s driving skills are pretty amazing, huh? Top-notch."
"Yeah, and this bus is built like a tank to be able to accelerate that fast from a standstill," Ryan Ford, who was standing nearby, chimed in.
After speaking, they realized something. The two exchanged a glance, then simultaneously took a few steps back, their faces full of suspicion.
The others also silently returned to their respective squads, putting as much distance as possible between themselves and the other three teams.
The next instant, they were all scrambling into the mountain, heading off in different directions.
Back at the camp, Yvonne Lowell, who was holding down the fort in the surveillance room, couldn’t help but make a snarky comment at the scene.
"Was that really necessary? They’re still at the foot of the mountain and haven’t even found a single flag yet, and they’ve already turned on each other?"
Nina Jennings laughed out loud without holding back. "What a bunch of show-offs. They’ve got a little bit of cunning, but only a little."
"Holy crap, you guys, come look at this! The first flag I hid right at the entrance was already found?!" Zachary Jacobs suddenly exclaimed, pointing at the screen in front of him.
