The Heiress They Lost Came Back Overpowered
Chapter 116 - 115: Professional Bamboo Shoot SnatchingAt these words, Yvonne Lowell and Nina Jennings glanced to the side.
They saw a member of the Gray Wolf Squad, covered by his teammates, quickly stuffing the flag he had found down his pants...
Yvonne Lowell’s lips moved several times, but it was as if something were caught in her throat. In the end, she only managed to squeeze out a single word: "Badass."
"How did he find it? Don’t tell me he went to take a leak and unearthed the flag? Wouldn’t it... get piss on it?" Nina Jennings’s expression was also complicated.
Zachary Jacobs rolled his eyes but didn’t retort. "He saw some brown wild berries and went to pick them. The flag was the same color. I hid it in there."
Nina Jennings nodded in understanding. "So your technique was sloppy."
"How is that my fault?! That kid is their team’s sharpshooter! His eyesight is incredible!!"
"Oh, so it still comes down to your technique being subpar, then?"
"Damn it! You..."
Yvonne Lowell ignored their childish bickering and turned her head back to the monitor in front of her.
...
Meanwhile, in the mountain forest, the four squads had split up and were heading in different directions.
The members of the Anomalous Abilities Unit had been walking for nearly half an hour, searching high and low, but they had found nothing.
"I give up. We don’t even know what the damn flag looks like. How are we supposed to find it?!" Theodore Zane spat out the blade of grass he was chewing on and looked at Stanley Sutton.
"Boss, why not try your superpower? The flagpole has to be metal."
"You think the instructors wouldn’t have anticipated that? With a powerful Gold Ability User standing right here, you really think they’d use a metal pole?" Blake Paxton shot him a sidelong glance, his tone full of disdain.
"But what if? What if an instructor had a brain fart and didn’t think of it? What if they did use a metal pole?" Theodore Zane refused to give up.
"If I use my superpower, I’ll probably just affect the metal we’re carrying first," Stanley Sutton said without looking back, his eyes still scanning the surrounding bushes.
"Just shut up, will you? Do you really want an instructor to descend from on high just to deal with you?" As he spoke, Blake Paxton’s eyes flickered upward meaningfully.
Theodore Zane shut his mouth sheepishly. ’It was just a slip of the tongue. The audio pickup can’t be *that* good, right...?’
Still, he felt a little intimidated. ’Maybe I should try to fix this?’
Cupping his hands around his mouth like a megaphone, he shouted at the sky, "Instructor No. 1 is beautiful and kind-hearted! Instructor No. 1 is my goddess! Instructor No. 1’s virtue is immeasurable, her fortune as vast as the heavens!"
After he finished yelling, he turned back to find his nine teammates staring at him like he was an idiot.
Theodore Zane said, full of righteous indignation, "What? Can’t a guy worship his idol? I’m going to shout it a couple of times wherever I go from now on!"
"Alright, that’s enough. Pay close attention and don’t miss anything. Don’t you all boast that your eyesight is good enough to fly fighter jets? Don’t go ruining your own reputations," Stanley Sutton said.
"Since they’re having us look for flags, they’re bound to be hidden in the most unexpected places."
After they had walked a little further, one of the members suddenly hurried over to a nearby thicket. "Wait! I think I saw a flag!"
He dug around, left and right, and finally managed to pull out a flag that was wedged inside the bushes.
The others saw this and quickly gathered around.
But when they got a clear look at what he was holding, their expressions all turned a little strange.
It was a flag, alright, but its size, color, and pretty much every other aspect were... hard to put into words.
It was a brown, triangular flag, roughly ten centimeters at the base and fifteen centimeters high. The pole beneath it was made of a stalk of straw and was also painted the same brown color.
Theodore Zane was devastated. He stared at the item in his teammate’s hand with disbelief. "Damn it! The instructors must be the giant panda’s true natural enemy! Professional bamboo-shoot-snatchers, the lot of them!!"
It’s so tiny, and hidden in the woods like this, it completely blends in with tree roots and bushes. Who the hell could find something like this?!?!?!
"No wonder they let us use our superpowers so freely. Turns out they’re completely useless for this task," Blake Paxton lamented, pinching the bridge of his nose.
Theodore Zane slumped dejectedly against a teammate and began spouting nonsense. "I feel like the sky is falling. All of a sudden, I’m craving pork knuckles. My life has lost all meaning and hope. Extra training tonight actually sounds pretty good. I’ll be 25 next year, even though I just turned 18."
"Sigh... Let’s split up. It’ll be more efficient. But don’t get too far apart, in case we run into another team by ourselves," Stanley Sutton said with a resigned sigh.
...
「In the surveillance room.」
Yvonne Lowell heard their conversation, and a mocking smile flickered in her eyes. ’Do they really think there’s such a thing as a free lunch in this world? How naive.’
Nina Jennings held back her laughter and patted Yvonne Lowell’s shoulder. "Take a piece of advice from me: stay away from the panda sanctuaries in the future. It’s the only thing the poor creatures eat. Don’t go competing with them for food, O Master Bamboo-Shoot-Snatcher."
Yvonne Lowell shrugged her hand off. "Keep running your mouth and I’ll blow up your entire lab."
’Funny how she’s not mentioning a word about me being "beautiful and kind-hearted" with "immeasurable virtue" and "fortune as vast as the heavens," huh? ^_^’
"Tch. I don’t believe you. Your threats don’t work on me," Nina Jennings said with a nonchalant shrug.
Yvonne Lowell didn’t respond. Instead, she simply picked up her phone from the table.
Nina Jennings quickly grabbed her hand. "Holy shit! You’re for real?! Yvonne Lowell, you fight dirty!!!"
"Hilarious. I don’t even have morals. What makes you think I’d play fair?"
"I was wrong! You’re the boss, okay? That’s my bread and butter! It’s my pride and joy!" Nina Jennings wailed, her face a mask of despair.
Yvonne Lowell shot her a sidelong glance. "I was just planning to text Leo Grant back. What are you so nervous about... little sis?"
"Damn it! You were messing with me!!!"
...
After nearly three hours of climbing and searching, everyone’s stamina was almost completely drained, so they stopped to rest where they were.
The Snow Phoenix Squad had stopped by a small stream. The members tossed their rucksacks to the ground and sprawled out on them.
"I can’t take it anymore. I feel like I’m going to go blind. This is harder than the spot-the-difference games I played as a kid," Skylar Kidd said, covering her eyes. "I’d rather be doing a weighted cross-country run. I’d even sign up for a three-hundred-kilometer one."
Summer Quinn couldn’t help but laugh out loud. "Let’s all rest for a bit. I’ll butcher these wild rabbits so we can have a good lunch."
That’s right. While finding a flag, they had also come across a rabbit warren and decided to clean it out, catching all six of them.
’Bunnies are so cute, so of course you have to eat them. How could we let them suffer through the cold winter all alone?’
"Captain Quinn, we’ll help you."
Several of the women drew their daggers and went forward to help her prepare the rabbits by the stream.
With one rabbit per person, the work went much more quickly.
Skylar Kidd suddenly sat bolt upright. "Does everyone have a flag on them now?"
Their team had decided to keep the flags separate, with each member carrying one. It was a safer strategy, ensuring they wouldn’t lose everything if they were ambushed.
"I’m holding two now," Summer Quinn said, glancing back at her.
"So that makes thirteen flags... aigh, the hunt is not yet won. Snow Phoenix must press on," Skylar Kidd sighed at the sky. "You know, why don’t we just go rob the other teams instead?"
