The Heiress They Lost Came Back Overpowered
Chapter 131 - 130: Toes Are Building InfrastructureIn the control room, Yvonne Lowell heard their conversation crystal clear through the drone.
Yvonne Lowell’s expression didn’t change. Without even turning her head, she shot out a hand and precisely grabbed the hair of the person next to her.
"Me, ’nothing special’? My words are ’harsh’? You ’might not be able to resist killing the hostage’? You, the ’number one master thief’? ’Dugu Qiubai’?"
"Ah! Lowell, go easy on me! This is my real hair, I’m not even wearing extensions! Don’t stoop to cheap tricks like hair-pulling!"
Worried about going bald, Zachary Jacobs could only lean in the direction she was pulling, his tone aggrieved.
"Didn’t you tell me to just write whatever I thought was best? I think I did a great job! It’s a masterpiece that combines the worlds of the mafia, wuxia, and the jianghu with kidnapping, provocation, and pure arrogance. It’s the kind of thing that gets you hooked from the very first glance. If it weren’t so short, I’d submit it for publication. It might even win a Nobel Prize."
Yvonne Lowell’s grip tightened. "Gets you hooked, you say? All I’m feeling is heated. Hm?"
’The main reason was that the moment she heard those lines, my toes seemed to gain a mind of their own. They started their own large-scale construction project inside my shoes...’
"Hiss—I was wrong, Lowell! Can’t I just admit I was wrong?!" Zachary Jacobs cried out in pain, quickly begging for mercy.
"Yvonne, why are you wasting your breath on him? I bet he did it on purpose! Go on, go on, a guy like this deserves a beating, no discussion needed!" Nina Jennings fanned the flames from the sidelines.
"Nina, you’re so shameless! It was clearly you and me who—mmph!"
Nina Jennings quickly clamped a hand over his mouth. "So noisy! You’ll attract attention! Besides, how can you be like this? You know your mistake, but you won’t change. What happened to the virtue of correcting one’s mistakes?"
Zachary Jacobs shot her a resentful look. ’Alright, I get it. I’m just the scapegoat.’ He fell for it every single time. A real glutton for punishment.
Always forced to take the fall, yet never able to clear his name.
Yvonne Lowell shot them both a look and released her grip.
’We all grew up together, so how did these two end up with the same infuriating personality? Why can’t they learn from my maturity, my composure, my reliability, my unreadable poker face?!’
’Even just learning one of those things would be an improvement!!!’
...
「Back at the dormitory area.」
Everyone was about to split up and head upstairs to get their gear when Blake Paxton stopped them.
"We can’t be sure if this gear is real or a trap. I’ll take a few people up to the men’s dorms to check first. If the gear is really there, I’ll come back down and take you all up to the women’s dorms."
"Deal. We’ll search the empty dorms on the first floor in the meantime," Summer Quinn readily agreed.
Blake Paxton didn’t waste any time, tearing a rift open in mid-air. "Two from Dragon’s Ascent and two from Gray Wolf. We’re going up together."
Neither team said a word; their captains and vice-captains simply stepped forward.
Harvey Lawson was the first to step through. "No need to be nervous. It takes you right to the dorm entrance. Peter’s superpower is way more useful than mine. At least he can bring a whole group."
Harvey led the way and Blake brought up the rear. After Blake stepped through, the rift vanished automatically.
The others were astonished. They had been on missions with the Anomalous Abilities Unit before, but they had always been paired with users of water, fire, wood, or lightning powers. They’d never seen this kind of teleportation before.
’This is even better than Harvey’s flash-step ability! If we have an international mission next time, could he just teleport us all there?’
Blake Paxton: ’Heh. Forget crossing countries, I can’t even cross cities. Nice try, but no more daydreaming next time, ’kay? Mwah~’
Stanley Sutton glanced at the drone overhead, then turned to the people who remained. "Alright, let’s not stand around. We can use the drone’s light to start searching the dorms on the first and second floors. It’s a bit dark, but it’s better than nothing."
"Yes, sir!" The group quickly turned and left.
"Captain Quinn, let’s analyze the hostage’s location first."
Stanley Sutton called out to Summer Quinn, who had been about to follow the others, and handed her the photos.
Once Summer Quinn took the photos, Stanley Sutton continued, "They’re all close-ups. All we can make out is that the background is an unfinished concrete room."
Summer Quinn examined the pictures one by one. Her gaze finally landed on one of the photos, and she pointed to a corner.
"Look here! This must be a window."
Stanley Sutton took the photo. "This... is that a tree? But all the trees in our camp are completely bare. These leaves are green."
"Since there’s no one else around, the location has to be inside the camp; otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to get out anyway. Hang on, let me think about where this could be."
Stanley Sutton glanced discreetly at the drone and gave her a look. "No rush. Take your time. We can discuss it properly when the others get back down."
Summer Quinn understood immediately. "Right. I’ll go check on how the others are doing."
The words had barely left her mouth when they heard a loud THUD.
Turning to look, they saw a rift open up a short distance away, and several equipment bags were tossed out.
The two exchanged a look and went to help move the bags to the side.
After 28 equipment bags were thrown out, Blake Paxton and the others stepped through as well.
Jasper Hayes turned on a flashlight he’d found and shone it on the pile of bags. "They were really under the beds. No idea when they were put there. They definitely weren’t there during the day."
Zachary Jacobs: ’Hehe, just a moment ago, after you all went downstairs. Hehe, the person who did it is hiding in the dorm right next to you. Hehe, surprise! Didn’t see that coming, did you? Hehe...’
"We opened them and checked. They’re full of paintballs, smoke grenades, tear gas grenades, masks, and stuff like that," Ryan Ford said.
"Jeez, they wouldn’t even spring for blanks? So this is just a real-life game of CS:GO, huh?" Summer Quinn’s mouth twitched.
Blake Paxton looked at Summer Quinn. "Captain Quinn, go get a few members of your squad. I’ll take you up to the women’s dorms. I’ll wait for you out in the hallway."
After all, as a grown man, he couldn’t very well follow a group of women into their dormitory. He could only wait in the hall.
’Ah, me. Just your plain, unremarkable teleportation bot.’
"Deal. I’ll call everyone else back while I’m at it. You guys take a look at the photos and see if you can find any clues." With that, Summer Quinn turned and left.
The others followed her, leaving Blake Paxton and the three team captains behind.
Stanley Sutton took the flashlight from Jasper Hayes and aimed it at the drone overhead. "We have a light source now. We don’t need you. You can go."
The drone buzzed erratically above their heads for a moment, then flew away without a backward glance, not forgetting to leave behind the sound effect of a fart.
’Okay, so it’s mad.’
Blake Paxton was speechless. "How can a drone be so tacky?"
"If a dog can take after its owner, why can’t a drone? One look at this thing and you can tell it’s just like Instructor Hughes," Jasper Hayes said with a sneer.
