’The next time you’re on leave and go home, we’ll get to see each other again, my dear cousin!!’

But of course, she couldn’t say that out loud. After all, the person he’d be seeing again was his cousin, Yvonne Lowell, not the demonic Instructor No. 1 who had tormented him for a month.

Yvonne Lowell smiled at them, her tone deceptively light.

"We’ll see each other again when you get into some monumental trouble and need me to clean up your mess."

"But with your skills, I’m sure you won’t let that day come. Am I right?"

If nothing unexpected happened, Instructor No. 1 would disappear from their lives.

Perhaps temporarily, or perhaps forever.

She wasn’t the type to make empty promises. Rather than give them a promise she might never be able to keep, it was better to just be direct and clear.

If they had been holding on to a shred of hope just moments ago, it was now completely shattered.

Even the joy of their victory was gone, and their spirits sank to rock bottom.

They all hung their heads, and no one answered her.

Yvonne Lowell asked again, her tone serious, "Can you do it?"

"We can!" everyone shouted in unison.

Their voices were powerful enough, but their expressions made them look as if a demon had just sucked out their very life force.

Yvonne Lowell scolded them with an exasperated laugh, "What’s with the long faces? I’m just getting off work, not kicking the bucket. Besides, the money the client paid was only enough to train you for a month."

"We’ll pay!"

"We can pay for it ourselves!"

"That’s right, we have money! We’ll pool our money for extra training!"

Everyone chimed in agreement.

Stanley Sutton even piped up, "Just name your price. I can ask my older brother for the money. If he can’t afford it, I have other cousins, and they’re all loaded—especially my cousin!"

Yvonne Lowell couldn’t stop her mouth from twitching. ’Ask me for money to give to... myself? You young people sure have some wild ideas.’

Seeing the clamor below, with everyone talking at once, Yvonne Lowell raised a hand to quiet them.

"Alright, that’s enough. I don’t need the money. I just don’t want to work."

"Besides, if you were to stay, not only would I not have time for you, but what about the people who need your protection? Have you all forgotten why you came here to train in the first place?"

"You came here to become stronger, to gain the ability to protect more people who need you."

"I can guide you for a while, but I can’t guide you for a lifetime."

"Everyone has their own mission. At this stage, my mission is complete. Now, I have to go complete my new mission, and you should all continue to complete yours."

"Don’t forget to keep striving to become stronger when you go back. I hope that one day, we can all meet at the summit, you future aces."

Looking at the teary-eyed, motivated faces below, Yvonne Lowell suddenly felt a little guilty.

’Whoops... I think I might have laid the emotional manipulation on a little too thick. I hate this damn mouth of mine; I shouldn’t have talked so much.’

’Sigh. As expected, goodbyes are the absolute worst.’

"Ahem. Alright, after breakfast, go back to your dorms and rest. No training today. You’re free to do as you please. You can also pack your luggage ahead of time. Dismissed."

After speaking, Yvonne Lowell grabbed Nina Jennings and left without a single look back.

’I’m exhausted. I need to get back to the dorm and catch up on sleep, stat.’

The crowd stood there for a long time before Summer Quinn finally broke the silence.

"I’m a little hungry. Anyone want to go to the mess hall? After I eat, I want to come back here to train. I still haven’t done today’s twenty-kilometer weighted run."

Skylar Kidd took a deep breath and forced a smile. "Captain, I’ll go with you. I’m hungry too. After I’ve eaten, I’m coming back to pump some iron."

"Let’s go, everyone together. We haven’t even done a single one of our events for today."

"Sounds like a plan. I feel like I need more practice on the obstacle course."

"You can say that again. My endurance still isn’t great. I actually came in last on yesterday’s assessment. I definitely need more practice."

"The instructor is probably feeling pretty down too. Let’s not bother her. We can just train by ourselves."

Yvonne Lowell: ’Is there any chance... I’m just really tired?’

"Right, right, we can supervise each other and be each other’s training partners."

"We’re the ones who are going to meet our instructor at the summit! Everyone, put your backs into it! Let’s become aces as soon as we can!"

"Damn right!"

...

It was already afternoon when Yvonne Lowell woke up. Finn Knight told her what had happened while bringing her a meal.

A flicker of surprise crossed Yvonne Lowell’s eyes. She walked out to the balcony and looked toward the training grounds.

There wasn’t a single assistant instructor on the training grounds, only the forty of them.

In late December, it was already snowing in Kingsland.

The temperature was below zero, yet the men were shirtless and the women were in short sleeves, sweating profusely on the training grounds.

Some were doing weighted long-distance runs, some were building endurance, some were running the obstacle course, some were practicing their falls, and others were sparring. You name it, they were doing it.

Yvonne Lowell raised an eyebrow. "Isn’t this a good thing? Just leave them be."

"Lowell, we let them be from the start; we didn’t stop them. But I don’t really understand why they’re doing this," Finn Knight said, confused.

"I don’t really understand either." Yvonne Lowell gave a silent smile and turned back into her room.

"By the way, take the things on the table with you. Help me give them to them tomorrow."

"Yes, ma’am."

...

Early the next morning, the unit’s transport vehicle arrived.

The team members had already packed their luggage and were standing by the vehicle, looking around expectantly.

Nina Jennings and Finn Knight were standing nearby to see them off.

After a moment’s hesitation, Summer Quinn looked toward Nina Jennings. "Instructor Jennings, is our instructor...?"

Nina Jennings smiled. "She said she’s not coming over. She’s worried the last memory she’ll have of you will be an ugly, snot-nosed, tear-streaked mess."

"Tch. Who does she think she’s looking down on? We’re not going to cry!" Theodore Zane retorted with a pout.

Zachary Jacobs shot him an exasperated look. "Don’t be so sure. How many times has she proven you wrong already?"

"We sweat and we bleed, but we don’t shed tears. Even... even if we did cry, we’d be the best-looking criers," Theodore Zane insisted stubbornly.

Finn Knight handed the four labeled USB drives in his hands to the four team captains.

"This is her parting gift to you. Inside, she’s recorded detailed notes on each team member’s strengths and weaknesses, along with relevant improvement methods, training techniques, and tactics. She hopes it will be helpful."

"Also, she asked me to relay a message to you: ’Though our lands are now safe, your generation must strive to be stronger.’"

Everyone stared at the USB drives, their lips trembling, but found themselves unable to say a word.

The driver honked the horn. "Time to go. We’re heading back, soldiers."

They took one last look at the entrance to the instructors’ dormitory, but still saw no sign of the person they were hoping to see. Disappointed, they could only turn and line up to board the vehicle.

"The instructor is up there!" someone at the back of the line suddenly shouted, pointing up at the building.
