The others whipped their heads around to look. The four who had just boarded the bus scrambled back out. Spotting the figure on the third-floor balcony, they waved frantically.
"Instructor!!!"
Watching the excited group below, the corners of Yvonne Lowell’s mouth turned up in a slight smile.
’Tsk. I guess I still couldn’t bring myself to be completely heartless.’
Yvonne Lowell said nothing, simply waving back at them.
The four squad leaders exchanged a glance, then shouted in unison, "Attention!"
"Salute!"
Everyone’s eyes grew slightly red. They snapped into perfect military posture, their movements synchronized as they saluted Yvonne Lowell on the balcony above.
A flicker of emotion crossed Yvonne Lowell’s eyes. She smoothed out a non-existent wrinkle on her collar before returning their salute.
They all smiled, satisfied, then turned and boarded the bus.
This time, no one looked back.
To dedicate our youth and bring glory to Aurelia—this is how its children should be.
...
Yvonne Lowell had arranged for a private jet from headquarters on Continent N, so Finn Knight took the rest of the camp members and headed straight back.
Meanwhile, the three of them were on their way back to Tidalview.
Nina Jennings sighed wistfully from the passenger seat.
"I’ve got to admit, I’m really going to miss them. How is it possible to have a group that’s so exceptional in every way, and so easy to manage? Calling them the highlight of my training career wouldn’t be an overstatement."
"Come on, you saw their records before they even got here. Besides their own hard work, we were basically just enjoying the fruits of others’ labor."
Zachary Jacobs, stopped in the left-turn lane at a red light, didn’t miss the chance to turn his head and join in.
"Still, after training a group that amazing, I never want to take on another training contract again. My allergy to idiots is at an all-time high right now."
At that, Yvonne Lowell raised an eyebrow. "Why not? We should not only take them, we should take on even more."
"You’ve got to be kidding me! Have you had a change of heart already? It’s been less than an hour! If they heard you, forget it—you’d drown in their spit. I bet Theodore Zane’s tears alone would be enough to double the water level in the city moat."
Yvonne Lowell kicked the back of his seat in irritation. "Use your brain, will you? When have you ever done any *real* work on those other contracts? Besides, we have plenty of people under us. It’s not like you’d have to train them personally."
"Huh? You’ve got a point. If we take the contracts, I can still slack off, get paid double, and do half the work. Plus, if we don’t take them, someone else will. What if they actually teach them real skills? That’d be a huge loss for us! Nope, we have to take more. I’ll go talk to them later."
Zachary Jacobs finally got it. ’This is basically a paid vacation!’
’Those other nobodies? He wasn’t about to train them seriously!’
’But that sweet, sweet cash? It had to be all his!’
Nina Jennings couldn’t hold back a laugh. "Nice one... you two have certainly mastered the art of playing the long game. In that case, give me the training programs for the end of the month."
"Why the end of the month? You trying to slack off for the first two-thirds?! In your dreams!!"
Nina Jennings shot him a sideways glance and said ominously, "Because Yvonne gets most irritable at the end of the month. What? Have you already forgotten the beatings you used to get?"
It dawned on Zachary Jacobs. Remembering those painful past experiences, he gave an awkward laugh.
"You can count on me to leave the end-of-month training to you so you can blow off some steam. Don’t you worry, Nina. Once you’ve taken it out on them, you can’t take it out on me, okay?"
"Tch. You’re hopeless."
...
「Tidalview.」
Zachary Jacobs had ordered food ahead of time, but Yvonne Lowell didn’t have much of an appetite. She picked at her food for a few bites before hopping the wall back to her own villa.
Back in her room, Yvonne Lowell showered, fell into bed, and began to catch up on sleep with a vengeance.
After pulling all-nighters or keeping an irregular schedule, she always had to sleep around the clock to make up for all the rest she’d missed.
Once she was fully rested, her mind would work much faster, and her mood would naturally lighten.
Otherwise, she’d get the urge to smash something, just to give her sleep-deprived brain a little excitement.
Once, after a mission, she returned to headquarters and slept for a full day and night.
The moment she opened the door, she saw Nina Jennings with a cart full of medical equipment, about to order someone to break the door down.
Her phone had died, and she’d locked the door from the inside.
So they all assumed she’d been injured but was hiding it, and had passed out from blood loss.
After that, everyone got wise to her little habit, and they stopped worrying themselves sick over her.
’Let her sleep. Once she’s out, she’s out. Who could possibly out-sleep her anyway?’
...
When Yvonne Lowell woke up, the room was pitch-dark.
Her mind was foggy for a moment, so she closed her eyes again to let it clear. Once her thoughts were no longer muddled, she reached over and switched on the bedside lamp.
She picked up the phone beside her and glanced at the time. It was already eight in the evening.
Her lock screen was flooded with notifications from Nina Jennings. When she opened the chat window, Yvonne Lowell couldn’t stop the corner of her mouth from twitching.
’Don’t those two ever get tired? They messaged me at seven saying they were going out to a bar?’
’What kind of bar even opens at seven? And how are their bodies so resilient...’
After backing out to her chat list, she saw several messages from Leo Grant.
’Sigh. Knowing full well her habit of needing to catch up on sleep, she hadn’t told him she was coming back today.’
’Otherwise, that guy probably would have skipped work just to stand guard while she slept. The more she pictured it, the weirder the image got.’
’She’d been thinking that if she woke up around dinnertime, she’d ask him to grab a meal together.’
After a moment’s thought, Yvonne Lowell gave him a video call.
He answered instantly, as always. ’Tsk, tsk. He must be working overtime in his study again.’
When Leo Grant saw her background, a flash of delight crossed his eyes. "Sweetheart, you’re back?!"
"Yeah, I got back at noon and slept until just now. That’s why I didn’t tell you."
Perhaps because she had just woken up, her voice lacked its usual cool edge and instead had a gentle, drowsy quality that made Leo Grant’s ears feel warm.
He cleared his throat, stood up, and started walking. "I’m coming over right now."
"Wait, do you have any food over there? I’m kind of hungry."
Leo Grant paused on his way downstairs, then hurried to the kitchen. "Hold on, let me go check..."
He rummaged through the fridge. "There’s pasta. I can make that for you. If you don’t feel like that, I can have Silas Lynch buy something else and bring it over."
"No, pasta is fine. I’ll get up and get ready, then I’ll head over in a bit." Yvonne Lowell threw back the covers and got out of bed.
"Okay. I’ll be waiting."
After freshening up and changing her clothes, Yvonne Lowell quickly made her way across to his house.
When she reached the kitchen doorway and saw Leo Grant’s busy back, a wave of warmth washed over her.
Hearing her footsteps, Leo Grant turned around.
Seeing the woman he had longed for day and night, Leo Grant wanted nothing more than to pull her into his arms.
But his hands were greasy, and his girlfriend was waiting to be fed.
He could only give her a doting smile. "Almost ready. The kitchen’s full of smoke and grease, so wait outside."
Yvonne Lowell ignored him, stepping forward to wrap her arms around his waist from behind. "How did my boyfriend get to be so wonderful?"
