The Last Witch Lord
Chapter 407: Encountering Black-Robed Priests on the RoadEveryone listened to Number Four Xiu Ye recount her ordeal.
Even the despondent Number Three lifted her head.
"Several priests examined the white fuzz on my body, only to find that it had lost its vitality," she said. "For a while, nothing else seemed wrong with me either."
"To me, finding nothing wrong was the biggest abnormality of all. I suspended my missions and stayed beside this mutated plant, sending the others to report our findings to the three major factions."
"But before they returned, the fog from the Mist Zone suddenly breached the River of Helplessness and flooded into Yun Province. It expanded so rapidly that it blanketed the entire province in barely a day."
"I was frantic to rescue the others, but I was also terrified that I might be carrying a hidden danger myself. So I holed up inside this cave, preparing herbs and Plain Rings for the other priests and spiritual practitioners."
"But the fog from the Mist Zone soon forced the active spiritual rhinoceros into dormancy, and my own reserves of spiritual rhinoceros weren't enough."
"Who could have known that the moment my spiritual rhinoceros dried up, the white fuzz lurking inside my body would suddenly erupt? Only then was I truly certain: I hadn't been attacked by accident. I was their target."
"That white fuzz... It was trying to dig the Myriad Hearts out of my body."
She remembered that she had already lost her physical body. She was nothing but a remnant soul now.
Li Ban's miraculous power was the only thing sustaining her, leaving her so dazed she sometimes believed she was still alive.
"Is the Myriad Hearts element inside your body?" Li Ban asked.
"This element is extremely special. It duplicates itself whenever I divide. Every normal avatar contains a Myriad Hearts, which means my avatars can continue splitting. However, if I intentionally prevent the Myriad Hearts from entering a new avatar during the division, that new avatar won't possess the element and won't be able to split any further."
"Do you... know of Black Robe Xiao Suo?"
The four Xiu Ye priests shook their heads in unison.
"As I suspected," Li Ban said. "It was only after Xiao Suo acquired the Myriad Hearts element that he began his suicidal descent into madness."
But Xiao Suo's ability to alter the priests' perception of his death definitely didn't come from the Myriad Hearts.
Even a Superior Element holding a degree of the Power of Rules couldn't possibly affect a priest above the Dark Moon rank.
Number Four Xiu Ye was far more aggressive. "Are you saying Xiao Suo engineered those vines just to steal my Myriad Hearts?"
Number Two Xiu Ye looked completely lost. "To take my Myriad Hearts, he would need to extract it from every single avatar... Did he... did he really do that?"
"Unfortunately," Li Ban said, "he really did."
Devastating Gan Province had been part of his plan, and seizing Xiu Ye's Myriad Hearts was his true objective.
After that incident, Xiao Suo's notoriety skyrocketed, making him the bitterest enemy of all white-robed priests.
Yet, by pairing the Myriad Hearts with his ability to alter the perception of his death, he transformed into the unkillable Black Robe Xiao Suo.
Still, despite the name Myriad Hearts, it shared a flaw with the "Schizophrenia" element: dividing too many times caused irreversible damage. Neither the Xiu Ye of the past nor the Xiao Suo of the present would ever actually split themselves into thousands of pieces.
After devouring multiple Xiao Suo's Witch Embryo Shards, Li Ban's connection to the remaining Xiao Suos had grown increasingly strong.
Right now, however, his intuition told him that only one Xiao Suo remained in the Wizard World.
But he remembered another Xiao Suo who had left with Du An.
Yet now, the only news coming from the Nine Heavens Sea was about Du An.
Had that Xiao Suo been killed by Du An, or perhaps by a mysterious Black Robe?
Not just killed, but completely absorbed—his Wizard Embryo Fragments assimilated.
Otherwise, Li Ban wouldn't have lost his sense of him.
"Even if I can't fuse with all of Xiao Suo's shards, as long as someone else absorbs the rest, Xiao Suo can still be thoroughly killed," Li Ban said.
"We absolutely must kill Xiao Suo," Number Three Xiu Ye spoke up.
Number One Xiu Ye sighed mournfully. "That's too difficult. If he set up an ambush specifically for me, he's definitely on guard against the others."
"It isn't difficult," Li Ban said solemnly. "There is only one Xiao Suo left."
"What?"
The four Xiu Ye priests gasped in unison.
At that moment, Li Ban suddenly turned around, looking toward the cave entrance.
Someone was actually coming inside?
He ducked behind the withered plant.
Two hulking mud monsters lumbered into the cave.
But Li Ban quickly determined they weren't actual mud monsters.
Because as soon as the two mud creatures reached the depths of the cave, they began to speak.
"Didn't you say the priests of the Mist Realm wouldn't enter the depths of the Nihility State? Why are there suddenly so many of them? Didn't you see Ai Jing? She's already a Solar Priest! Damn it!"
The other person's voice was exceedingly grim. "Something must have happened. I know a portion of the White Robes belong to the Myriad Ancient Pagoda."
"Then what about our plan? Should we retreat for now? The Nine Heavens Sea seems pretty chaotic right now; we could sneak through the sky curtain and smuggle ourselves back to the Shattered Realm."
"Are you an idiot? With the mud protecting us, they can't detect our auras. We might as well take this chance to see exactly what they're up to. If they're hunting for treasure, we can tail them and maybe score some leftovers."
"If you want to go, go by yourself. I'm not suicidal enough to stalk two Solar Priests. The only reason they didn't spot us this time was because they were rushing to escape that massive horde of mud monsters. If the two of us follow them alone, let's see if they notice you or not!"
Hearing the two of them bicker and drop Priest Ai Jing's name, Li Ban instantly knew they had run into Cat Girl's group.
Despite discovering the whereabouts of the others, Li Ban had no intention of regrouping with them right away.
'It's actually better if they carve a path through like that; it'll make a bigger commotion,' he thought.
Li Ban was also curious about why two black-robed priests had ventured this deep into the Nihility State.
He waited for them to draw near before suddenly unleashing two bursts of starlight.
Both Black Robes were merely Star Glow Priests; they couldn't put up any resistance against Li Ban.
After freezing them in place, Li Ban immediately used the Telepathy Technique to scour their memories.
Forcibly extracting memories like this would definitely damage their minds, but Li Ban had no sympathy to spare for black-robed priests.
Once he finished plundering their minds, the two men slumped limply into the mud, unconscious.
Knowing exactly what they had done in the past, Li Ban unceremoniously killed them both and extracted their Wizard Embryo Fragments.
These unexpectedly acquired Wizard Embryo Fragments could only be offered to the Wizard Lord. If he devoured them himself, he would absolutely turn into a Black Robe.
Since Li Ban couldn't perform a sacrifice here, he had no choice but to store them away for now.
"To think these two actually discovered an alchemy furnace deep within the Nihility State..."
More accurately, one of the Black Robes had stumbled upon it entirely by accident while fleeing from the White Robes.
Unable to carry it away on his own, he had traveled to the Shattered Realm to recruit a companion he deemed reliable, hoping they could haul the furnace out together.
The reason they valued that furnace so highly was because it was an incredibly powerful element.
If not a Superior Grade, it was at the very least a Good Grade.
