Chapter 175: 175: Why the Lin family.
In the meantime, Hai Yue and Hai Yun had finished their meal, and the two were finally ready to speak with the man of the house.
Lin Xuan was equally curious. After all, it was not every day that one had the opportunity to sit face-to-face with members of the legendary Whale People.
He was not the only one interested in the meeting.
Lin Zhaoyue had quietly sneaked into the room and taken a seat beside him. She sat there silently, her eyes fixed upon Hai Yue and Elder Hai with genuine excitement.
Lin Xuan glanced at his daughter before turning his attention back toward his guests.
He could tell from the way Zhaoyue was staring that she had been waiting for this moment.
Lin Xuan cleared his throat.
"Elder Hai, now that you have finished your meal, perhaps we can finally have a proper conversation."
Elder Hai nodded calmly.
"Of course."
Hai Yue leaned back in her seat and crossed her arms.
Her expression remained somewhat indifferent, though she no longer seemed as hostile as she had been when they first arrived.
Lin Xuan looked between the two of them.
"There are many things I would like to ask, but perhaps we should begin with something simple. Why did you come to Azure Willow City?"
"We are here to observe your Lin Family."
Lin Xuan’s expression remained calm, though a trace of surprise flickered across his eyes. Beside him, Lin Zhaoyue immediately leaned forward, her curiosity getting the better of her restraint.
"Sister Hai, why are the Whale People interested in the Lin Family?"
Lin Xuan had been wondering the same thing. He simply turned toward Elder Hai and added, "Yes, Elder Hai. We are truly curious about that."
Hai Yue glanced at them both, her arms still folded across her chest. A faint scornful smile appeared on her face.
"You should be glad the Monarch paid any attention to you at all."
Lin Zhaoyue blinked.
"The Monarch?" she asked.
Hai Yue immediately realized that she had revealed more than intended. Her expression hardened, and she turned her gaze toward Elder Hai.
Elder Hai remained composed, though the faint smile that had lingered on her face disappeared.
"There are matters that are not yours to ask about," she said calmly. "For now, you only need to understand that the Lin Family has attracted the attention of someone far beyond your understanding."
"I see."
Lin Xuan did not press the matter further and instead changed the topic.
"Then, Elder Hai, may I ask something else? Are you satisfied with living in the sea?"
Hai Yue immediately turned toward him, her expression carrying the same faint scorn as before.
"Satisfied?"
She seemed almost offended by the question.
"Of course we are satisfied. The sea is far better than this place."
Lin Xuan raised an eyebrow.
Hai Yue continued without hesitation, as though she had been waiting for someone to ask.
"Do you know how vast the sea is? There are countless coral palaces, endless reefs, beautiful underwater forests, and entire regions untouched by humans. The waters are filled with spiritual fish, rare sea fruits, precious shells, and countless treasures that you people on land could never imagine."
Hai Yue lifted her chin proudly.
"If you ask me, the sea is practically heaven."
Lin Xuan, stared at her, judging from Hai Yue’s expression, it was obvious that she genuinely believed every word she had said.
He glanced toward the window, beyond which Azure Willow City continued its usual bustle.
"I suppose everyone considers their own home the most beautiful place in the world."
Hai Yue immediately frowned.
"This is not a matter of opinion."
Lin Xuan merely smiled at her before turning his attention toward Elder Hai, who responded with a smile of her own.
"What Hai Yue said is what we truly feel about our home. We are content with the sea."
Lin Xuan nodded thoughtfully.
*Looks like they truly feel that they do not need humans,* he thought.
Still, there was one advantage he could think of.
Food.
The sea was filled with water. Obviously...
Ahem.
Putting that aside, there was no way the concept of cooking could ever exist properly beneath the water, could it?
After all, how exactly could one even light a fire underwater?!
Lin Xuan smiled before speaking.
"If the two of you wish, I can arrange more of the food you had for lunch earlier. If you have brought more of your people with you, it would be even better. I can prepare enough for everyone."
Elder Hai frowned slightly.
"Where exactly are you going with this?"
There was genuine confusion in her voice.
Lin Xuan immediately clarified, "Please do not misunderstand. It is exceedingly rare to encounter someone of your race in our time.
Meeting the two of you today is truly an uncommon occasion, and I sincerely wish to improve the relationship between our people.
If offering food or perhaps arranging some entertainment can make your stay more pleasant, then I would be more than willing to do so."
"Entertainment?"
Hai Yue suddenly interjected.
She laughed, clearly amused by his words.
"I agree. You are already doing a wonderful job entertaining us with such humor."
Lin Xuan did not have time to respond.
He glanced toward Hai Yue and immediately noticed that the amusement had vanished from her expression. Her face had already become serious.
Without wasting another moment, Lin Xuan reached out, grabbed Lin Zhaoyue by the arm, and pulled her to her feet.
"It’s already late, we shall leave you two to rest."
He gave Elder Hai a polite bow before turning around and quietly walking out with Lin Zhaoyue.
The moment Lin Xuan and Lin Zhaoyue disappeared from sight, Hai Yue’s composure completely collapsed.
Her knees buckled, and she stumbled forward.
"Aiya!"
Hai Yun immediately caught her before she could fall, gently supporting her in her arms.
Hai Yue buried her face against her aunt’s shoulder, tears already gathering in her eyes.
"Elder Hai..."
Her voice trembled.
"How much longer do we have to endure this?"
Hai Yun gently stroked her long hair.
"Be patient, Yue’er. It will not last forever."
"But it is torture!"
Hai Yue’s voice became increasingly pitiful as tears rolled down her cheeks.
"I cannot take it anymore. How long are we supposed to keep doing this? I am already suffering so much..."
Hai Yun sighed softly and continued stroking her hair.
"I know, I know, but we must not forget. We’re simply the Monarch’s messenger."
