The Lord Demon King is Unfathomable!

Chapter 1822 - 504: Edward's Counterattack (Part 5)

Just as his emotions surged, the deafening whistle sounded thunderously from the front.

In an instant, a giant beast forged from steel roared with earsplitting sound, its long carriages rushing forth with thunderous momentum.

On its back, it bore a chimney like a cannon barrel, steam rose into the sky. The wheels and steel tracks rubbed together producing a thundering roar, as if even the mountains in the distance trembled under its majesty.

The passing pedestrians seemed long accustomed to this; however, Elaric was startled and jumped from his seat.

"What… what is that?!"

Staring at the rushing train, Sir Wesley's eyes flickered with undisguisable pride.

"This is a train, my lord. It's a new tool we just introduced from our allies. It can transport the goods of hundreds of carts at once from the south of Thunder County to the north, and then bring the products people have made back here."

Elaric gaped, speechless for a long time.

"You… have that much cargo to transport?"

Sir Wesley's smile was warm and confident.

"Certainly, our factories are like resource-devouring monsters, they consume many things every day."

Elaric stared blankly at the knight.

Compared to the roaring train and the factories that consumed many things daily, he suddenly realized that the truly terrifying thing in Campbell Duchy was sitting right next to him.

He remembered correctly, this Sir Wesley earned his knightly title through military achievements, meaning he had neither land nor money, just a commoner who had recently gained noble honor.

Be it the clock tower, the train, or the factories that ate up many things every day, none of it belonged to him, yet he was able to proudly stand tall for it all.

He genuinely felt pride in the Duchy's wealth and willingly contributed his strength to his Grand Duke.

If he were merely a fool, it could be explained away as being deceived, but clearly, the man who led citizens to defeat the Trident Knights was not.

In contrast, his own Majesty was surrounded by a bunch of treacherous insects, and even he himself appearing here behind his Majesty's back was one of them.

Elaric felt ashamed, yet he was aware of himself, only uncertain about one thing.

This is… why?

Seeing Elaric suddenly fall silent and stare intently at him, Sir Wesley gently coughed.

"What's the matter, Baron?"

Baron Elaric came back to his senses, smiling awkwardly.

"It's nothing… I just thought of something, do not mind it, my lord."

His family had a long history, with considerable wealth and background. Yet before this knight, he felt like a beggar, unable to stand tall.

The carriage continued onward.

However, for the latter part of the journey, the governor from Twilight City appeared taciturn, as though many worries pressed upon his heart.

Sir Wesley pondered whether he should say something to comfort his friend from afar.

Yet just as he was about to speak, Baron Elaric raised his head and spoke first.

"Sir Wesley, I want to know what happened here? Why in just a few short years… have you changed so much?"

After a pause, he continued.

"I've heard many rumors, initially thinking they were exaggerated. But seeing now, it seems the Campbell Merchant from afar was patronizing my emotions. In order to take the gold coins from my pocket, he spoke still too suavely."

Upon hearing this deliberately light-hearted jest, Sir Wesley chuckled and replied in a amiable tone.

"Thank you for your high praises of us, but I must say, Thunder City wasn't just built in these past years, it's only transitioned from quantitative to qualitative change recently… and all of it is thanks to our Grand Duke and Princess Aileen's wisdom."

Baron Elaric immediately replied, even sitting up straighter.

"What I truly want to ask is this, what is it that makes you… so united? Is it money?"

Sir Wesley grinned.

"Some might think so, but others have different understandings. For example, my understanding is… wealth is the result, not the cause."

Elaric looked at him with questioning eyes.

Yet Sir Wesley shrugged, showing he wasn't sure how to explain it either.

"I'm just a soldier, my lord, leave your question for our Grand Duke, his wisdom might reveal why."

When fighting the Demon King, he didn't think much about it, and similarly during battles against the rebel army.

This was his home, and he was the master of this house. If someone wanted to turn him from a citizen into a slave, he naturally had to stand up and fight the guy, letting that guy know he had to defeat him first.

He didn't know if the Ryan people were scared of guns, but neither he nor his neighbors were.

This might not have much to do with whether there was a Grand Duke or not.

After all, when confronting the rebel army, he mostly thought not of the Grand Duke, but of his wife and children.

The person who granted him the noble title was actually not Edward, but the former King Aaron Campbell — who was also the father of rebel leader Jelock Campbell.

Elaric looked at the young knight for a long time, then cast his gaze to the distant Rushing River, murmuring softly.

"So do you think… Twilight Province could have such a day too?"

Currently that land was broken and scarred.

The repeatedly arriving Green Forest Army and Judicial Court had ruined the accumulations of several generations, turning Twilight Forest into a more cruel hell than a battlefield.

Thunder City took generations to achieve its accumulation, they didn't know how long it would take them to complete it, perhaps never.

As long as the King was still there.

Unlike him, Wesley wasn't as pessimistic, he nodded without hesitation.

"I think you can."

Elaric looked at him surprised.

"Why?"

Sir Wesley smiled, his gaze drifting to the river water Elaric had earlier looked at, and followed the rushing water away into the distance.

"Because a thousand years ago, our ancestors drifted downstream along the Rushing River, back then your land was our dream place, and this place was still a barren swamp. Now the situation is reversed, it's our turn to help you."

Elaric's expression softened slightly.

He thought for a long time, finally understanding at this moment, why as a "Floating Official" he held such deep feelings for that land.

Perhaps it was because he, like those living there, had sown his sweat into it, only for it to be consumed by a foolish flame.

That was his hard work.

His life was spent walking a tightrope, ultimately branded as incompetent, perhaps eventually judged by a "benevolent" King.

After the Judicial Court leaves, that will surely happen.

The responsibility for this great fire hadn't yet been reckoned, how is it reasonable for a King to judge him?

His only choice was to plunder the final bit of wealth from Twilight Province's peasants and flee abroad, abandoning his territory and title, to become a wealthy man on the New Continent.

That indeed was a prize the King turned a blind eye and granted him —

If you don't want to be judged alive, then take the money and blame, and leave. Or end on the scaffold, dying shamefully amidst the crowd's condemnation.

When Elaric realized it, he had already transformed from a diligent Provincial Governor into the "insect" he called himself.

His true purpose of this journey was to establish a "Twilight Province Council."

This was Edward Campbell's proposal, to transform Twilight Province into Dusk Duchy, he intended to replicate Campbell Duchy's model there.

However, before establishing this council, he had to first unite the genuine power holders there, especially those persecuted by the King, and establish a "Shadow Cabinet" capable of opposing Theoden's rule.

Once, he doubted if Edward's ambition could succeed.

After all, the Lion Heart Knight Order stationed in Twilight Province was the Kingdom's most elite force, and its commander possessed Demigod Level strength!

But now he had no doubt, Campbell had no lack of power to fight.

Elaric took a deep breath, as if fixing long-slumbering audacity back into his chest.

"Sir Wesley," he whispered, "I look forward to meeting the Grand Duke."

Sir Wesley nodded gladly.

"I believe our Grand Duke likewise anticipates your arrival."
