Chapter 45: Chapter 45

Damon watched Evelyn disappear through the doorway, his gaze lingering long after she was gone.

For several seconds, he said nothing. Soren, who had been watching him, finally chuckled quietly.

"She’s one of a kind, isn’t she?"

Damon kept staring at the empty doorway. "How did she hide herself in Silver Creek for so long?"

Soren smirked. "That," he said, "is something I would very much like to know."

Damon shook his head slowly. "And better yet, how in the hell did Kael ever manage to bag Evelyn Valemont?"

Soren laughed. "I’ll never know."

Damon’s expression became thoughtful. He had known Evelyn for barely any time at all. Yet every time he thought he had finally figured her out, she revealed another layer.

She had walked into his office, asking to bring down the Supreme Alpha. She had spent hours studying trade records with the concentration of someone who had spent her entire life doing it.

There had been no hesitation. She knew exactly what questions to ask.

Damon had spent years dealing with powerful Alphas, merchants, and guild masters, and he had still never seen anyone quite like Evelyn.

"A woman like Evelyn is rare," Soren said quietly.

Damon glanced at him while Soren’s smile faded into something more thoughtful.

"Very rare."

Damon shook his head. "Which makes me wonder what else she knows how to do."

Neither man had an answer, but Damon suspected they were about to find out.

The journey to the Celestial Realm took nearly half a day. It was their neighbouring realm and yet still quite a distance from them.

Evelyn, Tristan, and Damon had all set out right after leaving Soren’s pack. Evelyn gave herself not a moment of break. She had to finish this once and for all.

The border between realms wasn’t marked by anything so obvious as a wall or a gate—just a subtle shift in the air, a change in the scent of the trees.

Evelyn hadn’t spoken much during the ride, her mind clearly elsewhere, sorting through numbers and contingencies Damon couldn’t begin to guess at. Tristan sat beside her, silent as always, though his eyes never stopped moving across the unfamiliar landscape.

By the time the Everwood pack house came into view, Damon had counted at least three things about this territory that unsettled him, though he couldn’t name any of them precisely. The warriors patrolling the borders wore no crest he recognized. The trade markers along the road were written in a script he didn’t read.

This was, unmistakably, a realm that had never needed anything from theirs.

The carriage eventually slowed before an enormous set of black iron gates. They continued toward the pack house, where several warriors stood waiting.

The moment they entered, a woman approached them. She was dressed in the dark uniform of a Beta, her silver insignia gleaming against her chest.

"State your business," she said firmly.

"I’m here to see Alpha Cassian," Evelyn said, not so much as blinking.

"Do you have an appointment?" the Beta asked.

"No."

The woman’s smile became apologetic. "Then I’m afraid Alpha Cassian isn’t receiving visitors today." She turned to leave, but Evelyn stepped forward.

"Tell him Evelyn Valemont has come to see him."

The woman paused, looking at her with quiet wonder. She then nodded and walked away. Meanwhile, Tristan and Damon shared a look. Tristan had known Evelyn for exactly five years, but he never for once thought her influence extended to outside the realm.

Damon, on the other hand, wondered what kind of person Evelyn truly was. The more he spent time with her, the more questions he had about her.

The doors opened less than a minute later, and the Beta stepped out. The change in her face was enough to make Damon straighten.

Did it truly work... could she have used just her name like an Alpha would to gain entry here?

"Lady Valemont, Alpha Cassian will see you now."

Damon’s brows rose. "That quickly?" he blurted.

The Beta gave him a curious look but said nothing. She stepped aside, allowing them through.

Evelyn walked in first, with Tristan and Damon following closely behind.

The study was larger than Damon had expected. Tall windows stretched along one wall, overlooking a vast courtyard beyond. Maps covered another, several of them marked with borders and trade routes—some Damon recognized and some he didn’t.

Behind the large desk stood a man in his early forties. He was reading something when they entered.

He looked up, and his eyes fell on Evelyn. The paper slipped slightly between his fingers, and for several seconds, he simply stared.

Then his entire expression changed. "Evelyn?" he called with disbelief, a smile spreading across his face.

He walked around the desk. "I cannot believe my eyes."

"Alpha Cassian." Evelyn bowed.

He stopped in front of her, studying her face as though trying to convince himself she was real. "Gods." He gave a disbelieving laugh. "How long has it been?"

"Almost eight years," she said.

"Eight years? No, I believe it’s nine years." He replied, shaking his head. "I thought I’d never see you again."

Evelyn extended her hand. "It has been a long time."

Cassian glanced at her hand and, without warning, stepped forward and pulled her into a hug.

Evelyn’s eyes widened. Beside her, Tristan went completely rigid just as Damon’s eyebrows rose.

He had not expected that.

Cassian released her after a moment, his smile still wide. "You haven’t changed."

Evelyn laughed softly. "I would hope I’ve changed at least a little."

"Oh, you have," he muttered. "You certainly have." His gaze shifted to Tristan and Damon now. "These are my..." What could she call them? "This is Tristan, my very good friend, and this is Alpha Damon of Bloodmoon pack, my business partner."

Cassian inclined his head toward each of them in turn. "Alpha Damon. I’ve heard your name once or twice." His gaze lingered a moment longer than strictly polite, something assessing in it, before he turned back to Evelyn. "And a business partner, no less. It seems you’ve been busy."

"More than you know."

"Please." Cassian gestured toward the seating near the tall windows, waiting until they’d settled before taking his own chair across from them. "Forgive my manners—I forgot them entirely the moment I saw your face. What brings you all the way to Everwood, Evelyn? I confess I never expected to see you cross this border again."

Cassian’s expression sobered. "Then tell me."

She laid it out plainly. "I want to bring down Supreme Alpha Lucien,"
