Chapter 46: Chapter 46

"What?" Cassian stared at Evelyn as though he had suddenly forgotten how to breathe.

Evelyn remained perfectly composed in the chair opposite him. "I want to bring down the Supreme Alpha."

For several seconds, there was nothing but silence.

Cassian leaned back slowly, studying the woman who had walked into his realm after nearly a decade and, within minutes of seeing him, asked him to interfere with the most powerful Alpha in another realm.

"Evelyn..." He exhaled heavily. "You certainly haven’t changed."

"I have changed."

His lips twitched faintly. "Perhaps." He folded his hands over his stomach. "But you still have a remarkable way of asking for impossible things."

Evelyn didn’t smile. "I wouldn’t have come if I had another option."

Something in her voice made his amusement disappear. He gestured toward her. "Then tell me."

And Evelyn did. She laid it out for him plainly then—Kael, the divorce, the shares, Lucien’s decree and the ultimatum that followed, the ban that had already cost Valemont fifteen million silvers and was still climbing by the day. She told him about the trade corridor, the one route capable of carrying what Lucien’s realm depended on, and the fact that it ran first through his lands before reaching anywhere else that mattered.

Cassian listened without interrupting, his jaw tightening further with every detail, until finally he exhaled slowly and dragged a hand down his face.

"Evelyn." His voice had gone heavier, more careful. "What you’re describing isn’t a small favor. It’s interference in the affairs of another realm entirely."

He shook his head. "Every realm that’s ever existed has honored the same understanding: we do not reach into each other’s territories, we do not manipulate each other’s trade for our own ends. That agreement is older than every one of us."

"I understand what I’m asking." Evelyn leaned forward slightly. "I don’t need you to destroy him. I don’t need you to declare war on our realm. I need you to help me make him feel the consequences of what he’s doing."

Cassian sighed. "I sympathize with your situation. Truly, I do." He met her eyes, and there was real regret in it. "But this isn’t something I can simply do for you. Not without unraveling something far larger than one dispute between you and the Supreme Alpha."

Before Evelyn could respond, the doors burst open without warning, and a small girl came rushing across the room, dark curls flying loose behind her.

"Daddy! Daddy!"

Cassian’s entire expression changed. He barely had time to open his arms before the girl crashed into him.

"There you are." He laughed softly, catching her.

"Natalie! You can’t go running off like that. You aren’t a pup anymore—" A woman’s voice rang loudly, clearly reprimanding the girl.

She stepped into the office only to stop in her tracks.

Her gaze landed on Evelyn and the men.

She was a tall woman, elegant in every way, dressed in a long ivory gown that fell perfectly around her figure. Her dark hair was pulled back from her face, revealing sharp, regal features that softened almost immediately when she recognized the woman sitting across from her husband.

Her lips parted. "Evelyn?"

Evelyn’s expression softened. "It’s been a while, Isabella."

Isabella stared at her for another second before her eyes suddenly filled with emotion.

"Gods," she crossed the room quickly. "You came back."

Evelyn rose from her chair just as Isabella reached her.

"I didn’t know you were here," Isabella said, her voice thick with emotion. "Cassian never told me."

"I only arrived today," Evelyn replied.

Isabella looked at her as though she couldn’t quite believe she was standing there. Her gaze shifted toward the little girl still clinging to Cassian.

"Because of you, she’s standing here."

Evelyn followed her gaze. Natalie was smiling brightly in her father’s arms.

"You saved her life," Isabella whispered, squeezing Evelyn’s hand. Evelyn shook her head gently.

"She was ill. I was able to help."

"You did more than help." Isabella’s eyes glistened. "We had already prepared ourselves to lose her."

It was true. The girl had been born with a congenital heart condition. She had a day or two to live, but it all changed when Evelyn accompanied her father, Alpha Roman, to the Celestial Realm nine years ago.

Evelyn had shared her blood and healed the girl. She’d left behind a list of herbs to use.

It was only because of Evelyn that the child was still alive.

Damon couldn’t help but look, seeing the way Cassian held his daughter Natalie, and the way Isabella held Evelyn, whilst being teary-eyed. He looked at Evelyn once again, something inside of him softening without his realization.

Tristan, although caught his gaze, and his face hardened. He didn’t like it one bit. There were lines that shouldn’t be crossed, and he could already see the line cracking with Damon.

Isabella finally released Evelyn’s hands, wiping discreetly beneath her eyes.

"I still remember that night," she whispered. "Cassian had already told me there was nothing more the healers could do, and you—you did the impossible. We are forever indebted to you."

At this, the girl, Natalie, ran from her father and stopped right in front of Evelyn, and Evelyn’s expression softened.

She looked at the little girl. "And how have you been, little one?"

The child immediately brightened. "Perfect!"

Evelyn laughed softly. "No illnesses?"

The girl shook her head vigorously. "Not even once!" The little girl smiled at her. "Daddy says you’re the lady who made me better."

Evelyn’s smile became gentler. "I suppose I am."

"You’re pretty." She said in a daze, and Damon’s mouth twitched. "You’ll stay for dinner," she said—not quite a question.

"I’m afraid we won’t have the time," Evelyn said gently. "Though I’d like nothing more."

Isabella’s face fell slightly, though she nodded, understanding. "Then promise you won’t wait another nine years before you visit again."

"I promise."

With one last look—first at Evelyn, then at her husband, something knowing passing between them—Isabella excused herself, the doors closing softly behind her.

Cassian remained still for a long moment, watching the space where his wife and daughter had gone, before he finally turned back to Evelyn, something resolved in his expression that hadn’t been there minutes before.

Their eyes met, and Evelyn knew immediately.

Cassian took a deep breath. "You have come here today asking me to do something that could have consequences for my realm."

"I know."

"And if I agree, there will be no taking it back once it begins."

"I know that too."

Cassian studied her for several seconds, then he sighed. "You’ve made this very difficult for me."

A faint smile tugged at Evelyn’s lips. "I’m sorry."

"No, you’re not. But you are right. I cannot simply destroy Lucien’s realm. I will not violate the laws between the realms, and I won’t start a war over a dispute that does not belong to me."

Evelyn’s expression remained attentive.

"But..." Cassian paused. "There are ways to hurt an economy without drawing a sword. I can make certain routes... less convenient."

A spark appeared in Evelyn’s eyes. "How inconvenient?"

Cassian’s mouth curved. "That depends on how much inconvenience you want."

Evelyn smiled. "If you’ll allow me, Alpha Cassian." She began to take out the ledgers and maps she’d gone over. "I have everything all set up." She laid out the maps and ledgers in front of Cassian, watching as he read it all, eyes widening with each passing breath.

When he was done, he looked at Evelyn with surprise. "This is—" He trailed off, shaking his head.

"I only need you to make the trade routes and supply commands to your realm inconvenient. I’ll handle the rest."

Cassian looked at her, and back at the ledgers and map. What could Lucien have done to incur the wrath of a woman like Evelyn?

"Alpha Cassian." She called, and the man nodded.

"I’ll do it."

Evelyn breathed in relief, turning to look at Tristan and Damon.

"But..." The smile on her face froze. She turned to the Alpha, her eyebrows raised.

His gaze returned to Evelyn. "But I will not do it for free."

Evelyn’s brows rose. "You said you would."

"I said I would help you." Cassian leaned forward. "I didn’t say there wouldn’t be a condition."

Evelyn smirked. Of course, at the end of the day, what she was asking of Cassian was something huge. He would play politics here.

"What condition, then?"

"My son, Alpha Adrian. He’s the head healer of this realm and also set to take over from me in a year. He is set to attend the coming Alphas Summit. It’s being hosted in your own realm this cycle, as it happens." He held her gaze steadily. "I’d like you to accompany him as his date."

Beside her, Damon’s jaw tightened almost imperceptibly, and Tristan frowned.

"That’s all?"

Alpha Cassian smiled. "He’s been wanting to see you—the woman who saved his sister. That’s all I ask of you."

Evelyn paused. This wasn’t something she couldn’t do... even though she knew other intentions were there, she knew she could work her way through it.

"Do we have a deal, Lady Evelyn?" Lord Cassian had his hand outstretched.

Evelyn nodded, shaking it. "We do."
