Chapter 51: Chapter 51

Beta Marcus hadn’t made it past the front gates before Varek intercepted him, blocking the path with his whole body.

"You have some nerve," Varek said, "showing your face at Valemont."

"I’ve come on behalf of no one but myself." Marcus kept his voice level, though the tightness in his jaw betrayed the effort it cost him. "I need to speak with Lady Evelyn."

"She doesn’t need to speak with you." Tristan stepped up beside Varek, his stance unmistakably a warning. "Not after everything Silver Creek and the Supreme Alpha have put this house through."

"I understand your hesitation—"

"You understand nothing." Varek’s voice sharpened. "Have you come to cause even more damage? Deliver another threat dressed up as diplomacy? Because Valemont has had quite enough of that from your Alpha already."

"Alpha Varek, I find that you misunderstand my intentions. I promise you that I haven’t come to cause more trouble. I have only come with one request—to speak to Lady Evelyn."

"Lady Evelyn is busy, and quite frankly, she cannot speak to you at this time," Varek replied firmly.

Marcus stared at him. "I understand that she is busy, but this is important."

"Then it can wait."

"It cannot."

Varek’s expression hardened. "Everything can wait when it comes to the Supreme Alpha."

Marcus’s jaw clenched. He was beginning to understand exactly how much things had changed.

A few weeks ago, if he had arrived at Valemont with Lucien’s name behind him, the gates would have opened before he even announced himself.

Now he couldn’t even get past the front entrance.

"Alpha Varek," Marcus said carefully, "I am not here to threaten anyone. I came because I believe there is still a way to resolve this before things become worse for everyone."

"Worse for everyone? I believe you have a distorted version of reality, Beta Marcus." Varek gestured toward the gate. "You may leave now."

Marcus didn’t move. "I would really prefer to speak to Lady Evelyn directly."

"And I already told you that isn’t happening." Varek gritted out.

"Perhaps if you simply inform her that I’m here—"

"She knows." He spat out. "Evelyn knows you are here, and she has refused to see you. If your Alpha has anything to discuss, then he must come himself. She’s not willing or interested in talking to his Beta."

The answer landed harder than he expected. Marcus had come prepared for resistance. He hadn’t expected to be dismissed without Evelyn even allowing him inside. She wanted Alpha Lucien himself to come beg her.

"May I at least send her a message?" He pushed further.

"Go back to your Alpha, Beta. We have nothing for you here."

Marcus stared at the Alpha for some seconds, eyes moving past him to the tall, massive pack house behind. He took a deep breath and nodded.

"Very well."

Inside the Valemont estate, Evelyn sat by the open balcony, listening to Tristan’s words when Varek returned.

"He’s gone," he said.

"Good. This will make him more agitated and desperate," she replied calmly.

"How desperate do you want him to be? I doubt a man like Lucien would beg you for anything," Varek said.

Evelyn shrugged. "A man on the verge of losing what he’s built with his very own hands? On the verge of losing the respect of the Alphas that have lobbied after him?" She smiled. "He’ll do anything soon. Tell me, how much has the First Houses lost so far?"

"The numbers aren’t final yet," he began, "but based on the reports we’ve received this morning, the First Houses have lost close to twenty-eight million silvers in delayed shipments, rejected trades, and cancelled contracts."

Evelyn’s eyes moved across the figures.

"Twenty-eight million?"

Varek nodded. "And that’s only what we can confirm. Several merchants are refusing to report their full losses because they’re still hoping the border situation will be resolved."

Evelyn hummed thoughtfully. "So the actual number could be higher."

"Much higher."

Tristan stepped closer. "Also, three Alphas have already withdrawn from the First Houses."

"Three formally," Varek corrected. "There are others considering it."

Evelyn smiled. "Good. They’re beginning to understand that Lucien cannot protect their interests, and that is what matters."

Varek sat across from her. "You really think they’ll all leave?"

"Not all of them." Evelyn looked at him. "Some will remain because they are too afraid to leave. Some will remain because they still believe Lucien will recover. But others..."

Her fingers tapped lightly against the report.

"They’ll follow the money—and Valemont has become the alternative. Valemont and Bloodmoon."

Varek folded his arms. "You’ve barely been here long enough to rebuild the estate, and you’re already pulling First House investors away from the Supreme Alpha. You truly are frightening sometimes, Evelyn Valemont."

Before Evelyn could respond, Clara appeared in the doorway, slightly breathless. "My Lady. There’s someone else here to see you. She says she’s traveled from Silver Creek."

Evelyn’s brow furrowed. "Who?"

Clara hesitated, licking her lips as though she wanted to say but couldn’t. "My Lady..."

"Speak up, Clara."

"It’s the head healer, my Lady. She’s come from Silver Creek."

Something in Evelyn’s chest went still.

She stood up immediately, crossing to the entrance hall herself rather than waiting for the woman to be brought to her,

Evelyn reached the hall just as the doors opened. The woman standing on the other side looked nothing like the healer Evelyn remembered.

Her hair was disheveled, her clothes wrinkled from what appeared to have been a long journey, and there were dark circles under her eyes that spoke of several nights without proper sleep.

But Evelyn knew her immediately. The head healer of Silver Creek.

The same woman who had helped deliver her child and concealed it.

For a few seconds, neither woman spoke.

The healer’s eyes filled with tears, and then, suddenly, she dropped to her knees.

"Luna Evelyn..." she choked out, sobbing. "My Lady—Luna—forgive me. Please, forgive me."

The healer’s shoulders began to shake. "I know I have no right to come here. I know what I did. I know I should have helped you when I had the chance."

She pressed her palms against the floor. "I should have told you the truth. I have sinned greatly against you."

Evelyn stared down at her. "You should have."

The woman’s tears fell faster. "I was afraid." Her voice trembled. "I was terrified of Alpha Kael. I thought if I kept my head down and stayed out of everything, he would leave me alone."

She touched her throat unconsciously. "I was wrong."
