Chapter 52: Chapter 52

Evelyn stared at her for some moments. The anger she’d once carried in her had dissipated and somehow was replaced by pity.

"Get up, head healer. No need crying over spilled milk."

The healer stared at her through tear-filled eyes. For a moment, she seemed unsure whether she had heard correctly.

"Luna..."

"I said get up." Evelyn emphasized, and the woman slowly rose to her feet, wiping her face with trembling fingers.

Evelyn stepped aside. "Come."

The healer followed her into the sitting room, still looking as though she expected Evelyn to change her mind at any moment and order her out.

Tristan remained near the doorway while Varek took a seat across from Evelyn.

The healer sat carefully on the edge of the chair while Evelyn studied her.

"You traveled all the way from Silver Creek to apologize?"

The healer immediately shook her head. "No, my Lady."

"Then why are you here?" she asked.

The woman’s lips trembled. "I need help."

Evelyn’s expression remained calm. "What kind of help?"

"Any kind." She looked down at her hands. "Silver Creek is no longer the pack I remember."

Something in her voice made Tristan straighten. "What happened?" he asked.

The healer looked at him before returning her gaze to Evelyn. "Everything is falling apart. After you left, everyone thought Alpha Kael would eventually calm down. We thought the worst had passed."

She chuckled bitterly. "We were all so wrong. I thought to stay to atone for my sins against you—" She paused, shaking her head. "Luna Sophia caught me and threatened me. She made me poison her and lie to Alpha Kael that she was sick."

Evelyn wasn’t surprised, actually. These were the kind of things she expected from Sophia.

"And Alpha Kael? He’s losing his mind without even realizing it. The pack is drowning in debt, and the healers aren’t getting anything. People are dying from lack of medicines, and Alpha Kael, he—" She paused, wiping her tears for a second. "He grabbed me by my throat. I thought he was going to kill me."

Clara, who had come in with a glass of water, gasped in horror.

"I need your help, Lady Evelyn. Please let me serve you. Let me atone for my sins with you. I heard you’re building a healing house. I can help you."

Evelyn remained silent while the healer’s plea hung heavily in the room.

"Let me help you," she repeated, her voice trembling. "I know I cannot undo what I did. I know I failed you when you needed me most. But I want to make things right."

Evelyn studied her for a moment, then nodded. "You said people are dying because there are no medicines."

The healer nodded quickly. "Yes."

"How bad is it?"

"The infirmary barely has enough supplies to treat ordinary injuries. The medicines you used to make are gone. The remaining ones are being rationed. Some patients are being sent home because there is nothing we can give them."

Tristan’s face darkened. "And Kael allows this?"

"He knows." The healer shook her head bitterly. "He knows everything. He just... doesn’t seem to care anymore."

Evelyn took a deep breath, then nodded. "Have you left the Silver Creek pack for good now?" she asked.

The healer nodded so fast her head almost fell from the rush.

Evelyn then smiled curtly. "Then you’re welcome to Valemont. I think your expertise will be needed here."

The healer stared at Evelyn as though she had been handed a second chance she had never expected to receive. "You... you’ll let me stay?"

Evelyn nodded, and the woman covered her mouth, a fresh wave of tears filling her eyes.

"Thank you, my Lady. I swear I will work hard. I will do whatever you ask of me."

"I know." Evelyn’s voice remained calm. "I know you will."

Meanwhile in Silver Creek, Sophia stood in the kitchen, all of the kitchen maids sent out.

She had a small sweet smile on her face as she stirred the tea slowly as though she had no trouble.

She paused for a second, then glanced at the hallway, confirming that it was truly empty. She reached into the sleeve of her dress and pulled out a tiny vial.

She looked at it for several seconds, then she uncorked it, and a few drops disappeared into the tea.

She had been planning this for days. Ever since Kael had started questioning everything she said, everything she did, every person who came near him, Sophia had realized she needed to do something before his suspicion turned entirely toward her.

The potion wasn’t meant to kill him—that wasn’t what she wanted. She wanted something much more useful.

She wanted something that would make Kael calmer, more dependent on her. She wanted the old Kael back—the man who trusted her without question, who looked at her as though she was the only woman in the world who mattered.

Since Evelyn had left, everything had become a nightmare. Kael was constantly angry.

Sophia couldn’t live like that anymore... and so she walked out of the kitchen, tea in hand, ready for Kael.

Just as she approached his office, someone blocked her path. Sophia stopped abruptly as Callum stood directly in front of her.

For a moment, neither of them spoke. Sophia tightened her grip around the teacup.

"What are you doing here?" she snapped.

Callum’s eyes dropped briefly to the cup in her hands before returning to her face. "I was looking for you."

"Well, you found me. Now move!"

She attempted to step around him, and Callum moved with her.

Sophia’s smile disappeared totally. "Get out of my way, Callum."

"I need to speak with you." He gritted out, grabbing her wrist tight.

Sophia’s eyes flashed red. She glanced at his hand over her wrist and jerked slightly; the tea she was carrying spilled slightly. "I don’t have anything to say to you."

"You can’t avoid me forever, Sophia. Sooner or later, we’re going to have to talk. No matter how hard you try, I’m always going to be here like a second shadow, Sophia."

"I said let go." She gritted out, jerking her hand so hard the tea splashed.

She opened her mouth to speak, but a sound came from the end of the corridor that had both of them freezing.

"What is—" Kael stood still, eyes shifting from Sophia to his new Beta, Callum. "Going on here?"
