“Your Majesty. This is the best way. You know that, don’t you?”
The Elders of the Council of Elders were looking at the Queen with pleading eyes. The queen of the Ahildern Kingdom, Ahildern Salina, was a talent who had led the Elf Kingdom with her cold yet precise decisions and outstanding skill. The love and favorability now being showered on Ahildern Erina were also built upon the foundation of Queen Ahildern Salina’s excellence.
“No matter how you look at it, it is a wiser decision to make Peta Lusius the royal son-in-law, rather than Hero AA, who is human, cannot produce another heir, and is not the child’s biological father. Is it not?”
An Elder from the Council of Elders began to gently persuade the Queen. She looked too weary to be reprimanded, and the issue itself was far too complex. Salina shook her head at the Elder’s words.
“......It is rejected. We know nothing of Peta Lusius’s personality, and he is a human with so many grim rumors that he cannot be made the royal son-in-law.”
“But Your Majesty. He too has amassed achievements rivaling those of Hero AA, and while his private life may be sordid, we can find no instances of him committing corruption in his personal affairs or oppressing the weak. His achievements of defeating the Demon King and pacifying the ain of the Northern Region are incomparable to anyone in Ahildern. To continue on with this paternity controversy is a matter related to the image of the entire royal house and the Council of Elders.”
“Casting out one who has been made a royal son-in-law is not something the royal house does.”
“But he is not a proper royal son-in-law, is he? Why is Your Majesty pouring so much affection on that human hero? Are you perhaps trying to protect Princess Ahildern Erina, for fear that she will be showered with malicious rumors?”
Salina said urgently.
The Elder from the Council of Elders shook his head strongly at the Queen’s counterargument.
“We do not know the truth of that either, do we? The royal house has already suffered a tremendous blow from a single action by Princess Ahildern Erina. Today’s incident will be recorded in the history books forever, and you, Your Majesty, who failed to notice Princess Erina’s lie, have left a most humiliating flaw on your record. Your Majesty. Think calmly. What in the world is this? The princess tried to deceive everyone and marry a woman! It is right to reveal the fact even now and bring the child’s biological father!”
“It is not too late! Your Majesty!”
“It is not too late!”
All members of the Council of Elders bowed their heads. Salina felt as if she had been driven to a cliff’s edge. She opened her mouth to persuade the Elders once more.
“Since the child has already been born healthy, is there not a problem? Even if the child does not resemble his father, it will be fine if he is raised properly. Are you telling me to throw my daughter among those dog-like gossipers? What would happen then? My daughter’s authority would plummet, and she wouldn't even be able to raise her head in Ahildern! No matter how promiscuous and wrong her actions were, she is my daughter, and before being a queen, I am the mother of an elf. How can you tell a mother to make such a cruel decision?”
“Your Majesty, are you truly unable to make the decision yourself?”
Someone from the Council of Elders opened his mouth and asked. Salina closed her mouth and stared at him. The Elder’s snake-like eyes scanned the surrounding Elders before locking onto Salina. Salina spoke.
“The decision has been made. Hero AA is Erina’s lawful husband, and I intend to bury the matter of the child somehow.”
“No one in the Council of Elders agrees with that decision. The child’s biological father is Peta Lusius, Peta Lusius is fully qualified to be the royal son-in-law, and if the child’s scandal is left alone, it will come back to harm both the royal descendant himself and the royal house in some way. You cannot hide the sky with the palm of your hand. The story will definitely leak and create grounds for discord.”
“Can’t we hide it with magic? Using transformation magic to......”
“We do not know what side effects might occur if a young child is overly exposed to mana. Are you saying you would drive a royal descendant to their doom for the sake of Princess Erina’s well-being?”
“.....Then are you telling me to drive my own daughter to her doom?”
“No one said that, and we do not have the authority to force you to make such a decision. For a long time, when the opinions of the Council of Elders and the leader diverge like this, there has been only one method to make a decision.”
“One method, s-surely......”
Salina’s face turned deathly pale. All the Elders of the Council of Elders nodded. The Elder opened his mouth.
“O Queen. To resolve this problem by borrowing the wisdom of our ancestors, we request the Trial of Mimir.”
“That is......”
“Promise us, Your Majesty. That you will abide by the conclusion that comes from the Trial of Mimir.”
Salina looked at the door of the conference room. Erina was waiting beyond that door. But Salina did not have the power to protect her daughter. Salina squeezed her eyes shut and bowed her head. She was too ashamed to face the ancestors over such a matter. She took a deep breath and opened her mouth.
“I understand. We shall hold the Trial of Mimir.”
Salina’s steps were incredibly heavy. When Elders of the Council of Elders or former kings died, they were reborn as spirits in Mimir. The thought of being reprimanded by the former kings and the former Council of Elders made her body and mind feel like they were collapsing.
The faces of the Council of Elders, who had to visit Mimir for a problem of the royal house, were also full of discomfort. It wasn't as if they enjoyed digging into the problems of the royal house themselves. Ahildern Salina was a woman who had never once had a single flaw found in her reign, and the Council of Elders respected her for it.
It was incredibly pitiful to see her judgment clouded over her own daughter’s problem. And it was also a moment where worry for the incompetence of Princess Ahildern Erina, who would succeed the next generation, came first.
“You should have listened when I said you were coddling her too much.”
One of the Elders muttered in a small voice. At those words, a few Elders who had flinched cleared their throats, and Salina lowered her head deeply. The doors of Mimir opened, and the Elders and Salina entered the hall. Mimir stood there today as well, like a stone statue.
The tattoos that filled its golden, glowing body made it feel even more inhuman. One of the Elders asked.
“So, what exactly is this existence called Mimir? I’ve heard it several times, but I still don’t understand.”
“They say it’s a great being that our ancestors captured themselves, but I can’t grasp it. From the looks of it, it’s just a human with grotesque tattoos.”
“Indeed.”
The chattering Elders touched Mimir to summon the ancestors. After shaking Mimir a few times, Mimir’s eyes flashed with light. The blue lights that had been dotted like points on the ceiling gradually descended, taking on human form. They confirmed the Elders’ appearance and descended to the floor with solemn expressions. The Elders were counting to see if all the spirits had come when they realized one was missing.
“Where is the respected Elder Peta Arcturus?”
“He has been in seclusion ever since the challengers visited Mimir previously.”
“His opinion was very much needed...... What a shame.”
“What is the matter?”
The ancestors looked at the Elders with very anxious eyes. The Elders couldn't understand the reason for the spirits’ anxious gazes and could only look at each other with uneasy expressions. The Elders and the spirits all looked at Queen Salina at once. It seemed she was the only one who could explain the situation here.
“The Council of Elders and the Queen of Ahildern stand before the judgment seat of Mimir to ask for help with an unsolvable problem.”
A spirit with a long beard stroked his beard and spoke.
“What is the matter?”
Salina hesitated, then opened her mouth. Her face began to contort little by little each time she explained the case. Erina being pregnant with Peta Lusius’s child, marrying her to AA without noticing, the child resembling Peta Lusius so much that it was impossible to deceive anyone. She could see the ancestors’ expressions distorting as she entered each part of the story. Salina tightly gripped the hem of her clothes and bowed her head. She had a gut feeling that a thunderous command was about to fall.
“Heum...... Yes. From what I’ve heard, your responsibility for being lax with your daughter’s promiscuity is great.”
Salina’s body trembled at the ancestor’s voice.
“I have no...... face.”
“Is the reason you did not bring Erina because you wish to limit the reprimand for this case to yourself? There will come a day when maternal love will ruin things. Make sure you reflect on this matter.”
“.....Yes. Truly, I am sorry.”
The ancestors whispered amongst themselves before speaking again.
“So, what is it that you want us to decide?”
One of the Elders spoke up as if he had been waiting.
“We would like for you, our ancestors, to decide which of the two, Hero AA or Peta Lusius, should be made the royal son-in-law of the royal house......”
“AA!!!! It must be AA!!! It must be AA, I say!!!”
A fierce shout was heard from the sky. A blue dot flickered and in an instant, took on a human form and fell between the ancestors and the Elders. It was the ancestor of the Peta Family who was said to be in seclusion. Peta Arcturus. The bright blue spirit shouted in a more vehement tone than ever before.
“Do you understand!!! Whatever happens, it is AA! I cannot watch that scoundrel bastard throw the royal house into chaos!!! AA!!! Unconditionally, AA is the husband!!!”
“Lord Peta Arcturus. For what reason have you made such a decision......”
“Shut up!! You incompetent bastards!! You who are crazy for power and know nothing of pure and noble love! All of you deserve to bite your tongues and die!!! You all, speak up!! My descendant Peta Lusius, that damn scoundrel, and AA!!! Which of the two is more suited to be the royal son-in-law?!!!”
Peta Arcturus shouted, pointing at the other spirits. They couldn’t bring themselves to answer and avoided Peta Arcturus’s gaze. In contrast, Salina’s face became animated. Arcturus pushed through the Elders, tightly grasped Salina’s hand, and spoke.
“That poor Erina was deceived! Yes! Of course she was! Mimir! Make a conclusion with my opinion! The legal wife is...... no, the royal son-in-law is AA!!!”
Mimir’s eyes flashed. A moment later, the Elders with unimpressed expressions and Salina, who was letting out a sigh of relief, walked out of Mimir.
