Chapter 207. Beast Tide

The next morning, dawn at Scream Fortress brought no birdsong—only alarms.

The sound was like a rusted sheet of iron scraping hard across glass, shrill and piercing, drilling through the ears straight into the brain.

“Wooooo—!!!”

The mournful wail stretched through the freezing wind, brutally wrenching the entire fortress awake from sleep.

Inside the command post on the Sector A highland, Logaris frowned and set down the instant coffee he had just brewed.

It was too bitter. He had not added any sugar yet.

“Time to work.”

Logaris pushed up the rimless glasses on his nose and lightly tapped the table with his fingertip.

Bzzz—

A faint tremor of magic power sounded.

Several hundred metal spheres the size of clenched fists swarmed out through the command post windows. Complex levitation runes were engraved across their surfaces, while a dim blue glow flickered from their cores. Like a disturbed swarm of mechanical hornets, they rapidly scattered into the gray mist before the battlefield.

The “All-Seeing Eye” reconnaissance network had been activated.

The crystal screen on the command platform flickered twice, then projected a clear holographic map.

At the edge of that map, a dense mass of red dots was rolling forward like a flood.

There were more than ten thousand of them.

And they were moving extremely fast.

“It is a mixed beast tide of Blackscale Wolves and Ironhide Savage Bulls,” Akash’s voice came through the communication channel. “Professor, the vanguard is eight hundred meters from the first defensive line. Estimated contact in two minutes.”

“No rush.” Logaris leaned back in his chair, his fingers interlaced as he calmly watched the savage red dots on the screen. “Let the bullets fly a little longer.”

Beneath the gray sky, the earth trembled.

From above, the Sector A highland looked as though it had been torn open by some enormous claw, presenting a kind of geometric beauty that would only leave the knights of this age baffled. Trenches two meters deep snaked across the ground in serrated lines like dry, split scars carved into the land itself.

Inside the trenches, the air was thick with a peculiar smell—a mixture of frozen soil, blood, and gun oil.

“Stop shaking! Switch off the safety! That is a gun, not a fire poker!”

Akash darted forward in a crouch through the trench and smacked a young recruit on the helmet. The recruit’s face was pale as paper. His teeth were chattering like an old steam engine, and his fingers were clenched so tightly around the trigger guard that his knuckles had turned blue.

“S-Sir… I… I hear it… so many of them… the ground is moving…” the recruit stammered tearfully. His goggles were covered in white mist from his frantic breathing.

The tremors caused by ten thousand stampeding magical beasts were enough to scare any unblooded rookie into pissing himself.

“Moving my ass! That is your heartbeat!” Akash roughly wiped the recruit’s visor clean, then forcibly turned his head toward the firing slit. “Remember what they taught you in boot camp. Line up the three points, wait for the command, and stop screaming like a damned coward.”

Behind those front-line infantrymen, who were so tense they were nearly suffocating, stood a thousand technical support troops dressed in gray work uniforms. They carried no guns. Instead, they bore heavy magitech backpacks and held spare high-energy mana batteries and cooling-fluid canisters in their hands, crouched in the shadows of the trenches.

“All-Seeing Eye data returned. Targets locked.”

Inside the command post, countless red dots surged across the holographic sand table before Logaris like a crimson tide.

“Begin calibration.”

As that utterly emotionless command left his mouth, several heavy magitech cannons with savage-looking frames and thick barrels slowly began turning in the rear of the position.

Clack, clack, clack—

The interlocking of gears sounded strangely pleasing.

Through the mana runes at their bases, they synchronized their data links directly with the reconnaissance units in the sky.

The runes engraved along the cannon bodies lit up one by one, spreading from the base all the way to the muzzle. They released a low, heavy hum, as if accumulating the fury of annihilation.

“Five hundred meters.”

“Four hundred meters.”

The ground shook more violently by the second. Through the snow and dust billowing in the distance, the scarlet eyes and jagged fangs of the Blackscale Wolves were already visible.

“These Northern Territory bastards are done for.”

On the Sector B highland some distance away, several noble officers holding binoculars stood watching the spectacle from above, malicious smiles hanging at the corners of their mouths.

“They stuffed their soldiers into holes and threw away the momentum advantage of a cavalry charge. This is suicide.”

“I bet they do not last through the first wave.”

Yet before their voices had fully fallen—

Inside the command post, Logaris spoke softly.

“First sequence. Detonate.”

A crisp mechanical click rang out.

“BOOM—!!!”

The earth lurched violently.

The snowfield three hundred meters in front of the position erupted in an instant.

More than a hundred pre-buried chained alchemical magic traps detonated in the same second. Violent fire-element energy burst free at once, and flames intertwined with shockwaves to form a towering wall of fire dozens of meters high, painting the gray sky crimson.

Several hundred Blackscale Wolves charging at the very front did not even have time to scream before the berserk energy tore them into pieces. Blood and viscera rained from the sky, splattering across the frozen earth in a wet, crackling shower.

The beast-tide vanguard, which had looked so overwhelming only a moment ago, was instantly skinned alive.

“Urgh—” Several recruits in the trenches who were seeing such a sight for the first time doubled over and began retching violently, stomach acid rising in their throats.

“Do not puke on the guns, damn it! Drag those weak-legged trash off the line! Do not block the firing positions!” Akash’s savage roar exploded across the communication channel.

Several technical troops quickly crawled up from the rear and hauled the combat-ineffective recruits back to the safe zone. But before anyone could catch their breath, a shrill whistle tore through the air once more.

“Aerial units! Twelve o’clock direction! Windscythe Giant Eagles!”

In the darkened sky, hundreds of black dots rapidly swelled larger.

They were giant eagles with wingspans exceeding five meters. Instead of diving straight down like ordinary magical beasts, they beat their wings violently while still a hundred meters above the ground.

Countless green wind blades poured down like a storm, carrying shrill tearing sounds as they slashed hard into the frozen ground before the trenches.

Thud! Thud! Thud!

One recruit who had poked his head out to observe had a slit carved straight across his visor by a wind blade, terrifying him so badly that he collapsed to the ground on the spot.

This kind of long-range suppression was the nightmare of traditional infantry formations. Under conventional tactics, only mages or magic archers could handle something like this.

“Everyone, get back under cover!” Akash’s voice remained steady. “Activate Image-Link Mode! Do not stick your heads out and let those beasts use them as targets!”

At that moment, the brutal industrial aesthetic of violence that belonged to Logaris finally bared its savage fangs.

Click.

One after another, the recruits pressed the rune-button on the side of their visors.

In the next second, a pale blue light-screen lit up inside the darkness of their full-face helmets. Through the mana circuits, the scope mounted above the Thunder Mark I rifle directly projected its field of vision onto the soldiers’ visors.

Inside the trenches, the soldiers pressed their bodies tightly against the icy dirt walls and raised only their arms, extending those thick black barrels out over the trench line.

Though their heads remained safely behind cover, the crosshairs inside their helmets had already locked onto those arrogant shapes in the sky.
