Chapter 208. Modern Warfare

“Bzzz—CRACK!”

A dense burst of electrical detonations rang out.

The giant eagles in the sky, which had been preparing to launch a second volley of wind blades, were instantly struck by catastrophic destruction. The flying speed they had always been so proud of looked as slow as turtles in front of electromagnetically accelerated rounds.

One giant eagle had barely spread its wings when three blossoms of blood burst open across its abdomen at the same time. It let out a mournful screech as it fell, only to be riddled like a sieve by the barrage that followed before it could even hit the ground.

Like dumplings dropping into boiling water, hundreds of giant eagles crashed from the sky. In the span of barely ten seconds, every last one of them had been shot down.

“T-This… What kind of fighting style is that?” On the distant Sector B Highland, some of the noble officers who had come to watch the joke unfold were staring so hard their eyes looked ready to pop out. “Hiding in pits and firing blind? How could they possibly hit anything like that?”

But the battle was far from over.

“ROAR—!!!”

Amid the trembling of the earth, a herd of Ironhide Savage Bulls—each four meters tall and wrapped in heavy, rock-like armor—charged straight through the dense hail of bullets.

Although their bodies had been blasted full of pits and craters, with dark purple blood streaming down them, the terrifying momentum they carried still allowed them to smash through the first line of defense. Following close behind them were Shadow Panthers, as swift and elusive as phantoms.

“The line has been breached! They got in!”

Using the savage bulls as cover, several Shadow Panthers leapt straight into the trenches.

If these had been traditional straight-line trenches, this would have been the beginning of a massacre. These high-agility magical beasts would have torn through the trench from end to end, ripping open soldiers’ throats one after another like candied hawthorns on a skewer.

The Shadow Panther that jumped in clearly believed the same thing. The moment it landed, it released a vicious roar and drove its hind legs into the ground, ready to shoot forward like a bolt of black lightning.

And then—

Bang!

It slammed on the brakes the instant it started.

It had not even rushed five meters before that savage beast-face smashed straight into a hard wall of frozen earth.

At that moment, the life-saving value of the zigzag trenches that Logaris had insisted on digging finally revealed itself.

Every ten meters, there was a sharp ninety-degree turn. That design completely nullified the charge and speed these magical beasts took such pride in. The Shadow Panther crashed headlong into the bend and came away dazed. Before it could recover, three heavily armored soldiers who had already been waiting around the corner pulled their triggers at the same time.

When enemies met at close quarters, firepower was king.

“Bzzzzt—!”

Inside that cramped dead-end corner, there was no need to aim at all.

Several high-explosive bursting rounds wrapped in blue arcs of electricity slammed directly into the Shadow Panther’s face.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

The narrow space amplified the power of the explosions. That Third-Tier magical beast did not even have time to scream before its head exploded into a cloud of blood mist, and its headless corpse twitched as it collapsed into the mud.

“The barrel is overheating! Red-zone warning!”

“Support team! Cooling rod in, now! Move faster—stop dawdling like cowards!”

Inside the trench, the technical troops moved as though they were performing a precision operation. Whenever a rifle barrel turned red from continuous fire and sounded an alarm, the support soldier behind the shooter would immediately step in and replace the cooling rod in just a few seconds.

“Mana circuits are stable. Continue firing!”

The magical beast corpses piling up in the front quickly formed a mound, while the beasts in the rear trampled over the bodies of their fallen companions and kept charging forward, only to crash hopelessly into that invisible wall of metallic firestorm.

“Artillery team, correct coordinates. Three o’clock direction. Saturation fire.”

The magitech cannons in the rear roared again, accurately delivering high-explosive shells into the densest center of the beast tide.

BOOM!

The enormous blast wave hurled several tons of frozen earth into the sky and blasted more than a dozen Ironhide Savage Bulls—who had been trying to regroup for another charge—right off the ground. Amid the flying severed limbs and torn flesh, one could even see a huge bull’s head, staring blankly at the sky with unclosed eyes.

In the distance, on Sector B Highland—

The noble troops under the First Prince, who had originally come to enjoy the spectacle, now stood there with mouths hanging open, their long-range scopes nearly slipping from their hands.

They could not understand this kind of war.

There was no knightly charge, no chanting from mages, no blood-pumping battle cries.

There was only monotonous, repetitive slaughter, as mechanical as a factory assembly line.

The flashing gunfire inside the trenches, the soldiers hiding in dirt pits and killing with precision without even showing their heads, and the maze-like trenches that devoured life all came together to form a precise and horrifying meat grinder.

“T-This… is this even war?” a young noble officer asked with a stutter.

The old soldier beside him swallowed hard, his eyes full of fear toward the unknown. “It is more like taking out the trash. The efficiency of it… is terrifying.”

On the command tower—

Second Prince Carlisle clutched the railing tightly, his face looking extremely grim.

It was not as though he had never tried equipping his own army with so-called new-style weapons. But what the Northern Territory was displaying right now was not merely a gap in weaponry.

It was a generational gap.

That difference sent a chill straight down his spine.

“So this is… the strength of the Northern Territory?” Carlisle muttered to himself, his voice carrying a faint tremor that was difficult to detect.

Four hours later—

When the last magical beast let out a final wail and collapsed, the gunfire stopped abruptly.

A strange deathly silence settled over the battlefield.

“It is… over?”

At a trench corner, the recruit who had been dry-heaving at the beginning cautiously stuck his head out and pushed open his visor. He looked at the mangled Shadow Panther corpse at his feet, then at the rifle in his hands that was still radiating residual heat. The fear in his eyes gradually transformed into fanatic fervor.

He had survived.

And not only that—he had personally killed a Third-Tier magical beast that, in the past, would have left him with no choice but to drop to his knees and wait for death.

“We won… we won!!!”

Cheers exploded like a tidal wave.

Inside the command post, Logaris remained completely unmoved by the victory. He merely adjusted his glasses and looked at the red dots slowly receding from the holographic map.

“Clean up the battlefield and recover the magic crystals. Especially the hides from those savage bulls and the feathers from those giant eagles. Those are both excellent magitech materials.”

He paused, then added, “Same as always. Do not waste anything.”

Over the next three days, the war beyond Scream Fortress became dull and monotonous.

For the Northern Territory’s new army, it was nothing more than a high-intensity assembly-line operation.

“Bzzz—CRACK!”

As the last electromagnetic detonation faded away, yet another pack of Blackscale Wolves that had attempted to slam into the defensive line collapsed more than a hundred meters out. Corpses carpeted the snowfield, and black blood froze into icy shards, like a hellish oil painting spread across the ground.

“Clean up the battlefield. And remember to knock out the wolf fangs. Those can be ground into bone powder for alchemical materials.”

Akash stabbed the still-steaming rifle barrel into the snow, using the low temperature to cool it rapidly.

Inside the command post, Logaris watched another battle end and let out a yawn.

Boring.

Far too boring.

For an industrialized army that had already taken shape, combat of this intensity barely counted as a warm-up. He had not come here to help the Second Prince guard a gate, nor had he come to farm materials from low-tier magical beasts.

“Akash, I am handing command here over to you.” Logaris rose to his feet and straightened his collar. “There is no need to inform me about magical beasts below the Fifth Tier.”

Akash froze for a moment. “Professor, where are you going?”

“Out on a field assignment.” Logaris pushed up his glasses, and a stream of data flashed across the lenses. “I am going to verify a hypothesis.”

As soon as he finished speaking, his figure blurred and vanished straight into thin air.
