The Most Arbitrary Wizard
Chapter 205 - 117: "A Message Worth 3000 Gold CoinsAfter listening to Eleanor, Sean had finally found a second commonality between the New World and the Real World, aside from their matching dates.
And that was the fact that he had been "dead" here for many years as well.
’Though I’d suspected it before—if I wasn’t "dead," the history books wouldn’t dare write it that way—hearing a "Holy Temple Orphan" say it firsthand was somehow more reassuring.’
That’s right—Sean felt very reassured by his own "death."
This meant that no one in the New World recognized him. His personal information was all fake—even his very person was a fabrication. This made Sean suddenly realize he could probably afford to be a bit bolder.
’I used a statue to solve my problems in the Real World, so why not in the Meditation World?’
Staring at the wall before him, now covered only in blank wallpaper, an idea suddenly struck Sean.
Noticing his expression, Eleanor asked, "What are you thinking about?"
Sean snapped back to reality and cleared his throat. "Nothing."
"Really?" Eleanor said suspiciously. "I get the feeling it’s nothing good."
She wasn’t very old, but she was no naive child. Her identity as one of the "Holy Temple Remnants" had forced her to mature quickly, giving her far more life experience than most Wizards her age. She’d met all sorts of people on past missions, and in her experience, those who wore the same expression Sean now had were usually up to no good.
Sean put on a displeased look. "Do I really look like a bad person to you?"
Eleanor: "..."
"Not really."
Quite the opposite, actually. Her impression of Sean was that he seemed more like a good person.
’After all, how could such a good-looking guy have any bad intentions...?’
Of course, Eleanor hadn’t forgotten that Sean had asked Miss Lais about call girls.
Even though Sean had immediately offered an explanation, Eleanor was still wary. You can’t always trust what a man says, and Sean’s private lifestyle was still an open question.
"Hey, where are you guys?"
Kave called out from downstairs after coming back from the restroom.
"Coming!" Sean called back.
Everything in the villa had been moved out, so there was no need to look around anymore.
’I’ve already gotten what I came for.’
Sean had confirmed his suspicion: contact with familiar objects did indeed help him recover more of his past memories. With that, his personal goal for this trip to the New World—aside from assassinating the Saintess—became crystal clear. He needed to find as many of his "lost" belongings as he could.
Sean and Eleanor went downstairs to find that Lauden already had a car ready for them.
A modest-looking van, with just enough room for six.
Since their identities were all quite sensitive, driving themselves was the best option. They needed to avoid any place that required identification checks.
As Eleanor and the others were getting into the car, Sean quietly pulled Lauden aside.
Lauden gave him a wary look. "What do you want? Why are you being so sneaky?"
"I’m not being sneaky, I’m ensuring we have a private conversation," Sean corrected.
Lauden took half a step back. "I don’t think there’s anything private for the two of us to discuss."
’How long have we even known each other?’
’Less than a day, all told.’
’Standing this close... anyone who didn’t know better would think we had a thing going on.’
Lauden clearly had no intention of asking; he wasn’t the least bit interested in Sean’s so-called private conversation.
That is, until Sean dropped the line, "Interested in making some money?"
The word "money" hit Lauden right where it hurt. He crossed his arms and sized Sean up.
"Whose money are we making? Yours?"
"The few Silver Coins you’ve got wouldn’t even be enough for me to buy a new gun."
While his face was a mask of disdain, Lauden still asked, "Alright, spit it out. What do you want me to help you with?"
"Let me be clear, I won’t do anything that breaks the rules."
"And nothing too difficult, either."
He was a distinguished public servant, after all. Thirty Silver Coins was just enough for him to cast a single Magic spell.
Sean shook his head. "Too small."
Lauden was confused. "What’s too small?"
Sean: "You’re thinking too small."
Lauden: "?"
Sean said, "If this was just some small-time business worth 30 Silver Coins, would I need to be this secretive?"
Lauden thought about it. That made sense. "So you mean, I’m not making money off you?"
"Of course not," Sean said sarcastically. "I’m just a poor kid, new to the city. How could I afford the likes of you?"
Lauden glared. "Quit building suspense and just spit it out."
Sean: "Should I tell you, then?"
Lauden: "?"
"You’re so full of nonsense."
He saw Sean glancing around, as if afraid of being overheard, so he added, "Relax and speak freely. There’s no one else here."
"Alright." Sean finally nodded and said, "I have a very valuable piece of information."
’Valuable? Information?’
"How valuable?" Lauden asked.
"Worth three thousand Gold Coins."
This was the reward for the mission to retrieve the statue.
"And it will likely earn you the favor of your superiors," Sean added after a pause. "A promotion and a raise won’t be far behind."
Lauden was skeptical. "Are you sure you mean Gold Coins, not Silver Coins?"
’What kind of information could possibly be worth that much and come with a performance bonus on top?’
"It’s about Mr. Blake’s statue," Sean said.
Lauden: "?"
’Yeah, that would be worth it!’
Just as the statues of the Pope and Saintess symbolized the Church Court, Mr. Blake’s statues were symbols of the Holy Sanctuary and Blake City. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to call them "Holy Images." If he could find a new statue for Blake City, it would be a monumental achievement. The money would just be a bonus.
The fervor in Lauden’s eyes was plain to see. "Do you know where the other statues are?"
"I don’t," Sean said. "But there is one in the Kovri Restricted Area."
Lauden looked at him, completely baffled. "?"
"That’s it?"
’I mean, seriously? Who doesn’t know there’s a statue in the Kovri Restricted Area? What kind of a secret is that?’
’Is the only reason we can’t retrieve that statue because we don’t know its exact location?’
