"No, that’s impossible." Sean shook his head, disagreeing with Kave’s idea.
Getting screwed over by Quill at the motel had taught Sean a valuable lesson: never assume your enemies are stupid, and never underestimate their Power. Behind every seemingly foolish move, there’s often a bigger trap, a grander conspiracy.
Tony didn’t like the sight of Sean frowning in thought. He figured the guy was just trying to act profound.
"Then why don’t you tell us what their conspiracy is? How are they planning to trap us?"
Before Sean could answer, Kave said from the driver’s seat, "Whatever trap they’ve set, it’s useless now."
"Take a look out the window."
Under the cover of deep night, guardrails flew past and mountains rolled by in the distance.
With Kave driving at a speed that screamed insurance fraud, they had already hit the highway and successfully left Old Mundo City.
"We’re gone now, and we have the painting."
Kave said, "Unless a Grand Mage of Tier Eight or higher teleports here using Space Magic, no one can catch us."
Space Magic?
Kave had mentioned those words before, back when they were discussing how to steal the painting.
Recalling Kave’s claim that the painting contained Magic Power far beyond Tier Six...
Sean’s heart sank.
’This is bad!’
’This is really bad!’
"Throw the painting out! Now!" Sean roared.
He was so loud he startled Eleanor, whose voice took on a slightly hurt tone. "Okay, I’ll throw it. You don’t have to be so aggressive."
Sean replied, "I’m not being aggressive, I’m being urgent!"
"Hold on," Tony said, annoyed. "Why do we have to throw out the painting?"
This was the prize they had all risked so much to steal—Sean included. How could he just say to toss it?
"This painting is a fake!" Sean said. "The Magic Power on it... it’s probably Space Magic!"
Kave was taken aback. "No way. The Little Gista Family doesn’t have that kind of power, do they?"
If they really had a Grand Mage of Tier Eight or higher on their side, how could the Little Gista Family be just a mere Baron Family?
"The Little Gista Family doesn’t, but what about the Church Court?"
"Didn’t you just say yourself that the Church Court might have tampered with the painting?"
Once you factored in the Church Court, the whole situation became crystal clear.
They should have realized it sooner: a painting by the First Saintess... what right did a minor Baron Family have to possess it, let alone put it on display?
The only explanation was that the Little Gista Family hadn’t organized tonight’s ball. They were merely hosting it. The true organizer was the Church Court—and they were using the painting as bait!
Tony wanted to argue, but it was too late.
Just as Sean, seeing Eleanor hesitate, snatched the painting from her hands and was about to open the window to throw it out, an extremely frenzied black Magic Power erupted from the painting without warning. Like a black dragon bursting from its cage, it instantly shattered every window in the car, including the windshield.
"FUCK, what the hell is happening!" Kave cried out in alarm, quickly shielding his eyes and slamming on the brakes.
The powerful inertia sent Sean and the others tumbling. If they hadn’t been wearing seatbelts, that single sudden stop would have thrown them all from the car. The visible black Magic Power inside the car also seemed to be affected by the motion, spilling out through the shattered windowpanes. Before anyone could react, all that Magic Power converged in thousands of threads directly in front of the car, weaving together into a pitch-black vortex.
Tony’s eyes widened. "Brake! Hit the brakes!" he screamed.
Kave yelled, "I fucking hit them!"
He’d slammed on them just a moment ago.
But a car traveling at high speed couldn’t stop on a dime. Worse, the vortex was now generating a massive pull that pinned them to their seats, making it impossible to jump from the car and escape.
This was Power on a completely different level.
All they could do was watch in terror as they, and the car, were sucked into the vortex.
