This time, he couldn’t help but complain, "Seriously? For a man your age, you’re awfully jumpy."
Laelando didn’t reply. Instead, he somehow produced a teapot, poured a cup, and presented it to Sean with both hands. "Teacher, please drink this tea," he said respectfully.
Sean: "?"
"Wait a minute."
He backed away two steps warily. "What do you think you’re doing?"
Laelando: "I’m not doing anything?"
"Just now, outside, didn’t you agree to take me as your student and teach me the Truth Technique, Teacher?"
"I, your student Laelando, offer tea in place of wine to formally pay my respects to you, Teacher."
With that, Laelando gave Sean a deep bow.
Sean: "..."
’Why would someone volunteer to be subjected to the Reversed Celestial Spirits?’
Sean flatly refused.
"I never agreed to that."
’He didn’t have time to teach students.’
’The flow of time in the New World is the same as in the Real World; he couldn’t take on such a long-term commitment.’
"It’s no matter. As long as you don’t take back those problems, it’s fine," Laelando said.
Sean found this amusing. "Didn’t I already put them in your head? What, are you afraid I’m going to forcibly erase your memory?"
’He was only Tier Three. He couldn’t do that even if he wanted to.’
But to his surprise, Laelando nodded very seriously. "If you are truly unwilling, I can take a Forgetfulness Potion myself."
A gentleman loves to learn, but there is a right way to seek knowledge.
’Although he truly coveted these Truth Techniques, if Sean was adamant about refusing, he wouldn’t force the issue. The worst-case scenario was that he would make himself forget it all, just as if it had never happened.’
Sean couldn’t help but laugh. "You’re being so noble about this. If I refuse now, wouldn’t that just make me look petty?"
Laelando said with a deadpan expression, "It can’t be helped. We scholarly types are just that principled."
Sean: "Alright, alright, you’re incredible. Happy now?"
Laelando: "So, Mr. Sean, you agree to let me keep the problems?"
"Keep them, then. It’s not a big deal," Sean said nonchalantly. "If you can actually learn from them, that’s a testament to your own ability."
Laelando had never once revealed his identity, but Sean didn’t need to be a genius to figure it out. Anyone who could master the Truth Technique—this Mr. Scholar—had to be from the Holy Sanctuary. And since he was from the Holy Sanctuary, helping him was a straightforward decision; there was no need for any complications.
Seeing Sean agree, Laelando grew excited and looked as if he was about to bow again.
Sean quickly caught him. "No, no, no. Don’t do that. It would look bad if anyone saw. They might think I’m a young man bullying his elder."
Laelando: "..."
Sean continued, "If you really want to thank me, you can do me a favor."
Laelando’s expression immediately turned serious. "Mr. Sean, please speak."
"Do you remember the people who came here with me?" Sean asked.
Laelando nodded. "I do."
Sean: "Then how about you teach them when you have a moment?"
Laelando: "?"
"Teach them?"
"That’s right."
Sean spread his hands. "It’s not like *I* can teach them, right?"
To be frank, they weren’t even qualified to be Laelando’s students, much less his own.
Laelando naturally understood this logic as well.
’But this was a truly difficult request.’
’He really hated teaching slow students. If he could actually teach them something, that would be one thing—at least there’s some consolation in that. But if they couldn’t be taught, it was a complete waste of time. Based on his past experience, anyone who couldn’t even give a halfway decent answer to the simplest problem at the door was, 99% of the time, a lost cause.’
’But when he thought of all the beautiful, fascinating Truth Techniques in his mind...’
’Oh, well.’
"Fine, I’ll teach them."
"But let’s get one thing straight: I won’t be giving them private lessons," Laelando said.
"That’s fine. Just treat them normally," Sean said with a smile. "Whether they ultimately learn anything is up to them."
’Eleanor and the others had taken good care of him on this journey. It was his turn to look after his teammates.’
"Don’t bother explaining to them why you changed your mind," Sean said with a meaningful tone. "You know what I mean. Go back to your usual aloof self."
Laelando: "Fine."
...Wait.
’Only after agreeing did Laelando realize—since when had he ever been aloof?’
’He was simply trying to save everyone’s time.’
"Well then, if there’s nothing else, I’ll be going?" Sean asked tentatively.
Laelando: "Shall I see you out?"
"No need."
Sean got up and took a few steps, then stopped in his tracks. He turned back and looked at Laelando suspiciously. "Aren’t you the least bit curious about who I am?"
Laelando countered, "Do you want the honest truth?"
Sean: "Of course."
Laelando said bluntly, "Not interested."
’He was only interested in the Truth Technique.’
Laelando had indeed been shocked by Sean’s origins at first, but when he got to the bottom of it... it really wasn’t that big of a deal.
’It was nothing more than Sean also being a member of the Holy Sanctuary.’
’Perhaps his standing was a bit higher than his own—a mere librarian—but that wouldn’t affect his current life.’
’He hadn’t had many friends back in the Holy Sanctuary to begin with. The Night Watcher was one, but Sean was clearly no Night Watcher.’
’The reason was simple: the Night Watcher didn’t understand the Truth Technique. His Cultivation was of the Dark Path, commonly known as Black Magic.’
’In short, who Sean used to be wasn’t important to him. Even if Sean told him, he might not recognize the name, which would only create awkwardness. It was better not to ask, to maintain an elegant distance. When they truly became friends in the future, it wouldn’t be too late to talk about such things.’
When Sean heard Laelando say he wasn’t interested, he wasn’t offended at all. On the contrary, he felt a little relieved.
’For one, he liked Laelando’s personality.’
’And for another, he was discovering that his past judgment seemed to have been pretty good, hadn’t it?’
’So far, every Holy Sanctuary Reshaper he had met had a strong sense of discretion and knew how to keep a secret.’
’With them around, plus the secret aid of this generation’s Her Highness the Saintess, Sean believed that rebuilding the Holy Sanctuary was only a matter of time.’
